We did it! We sold our house in North Carolina and moved to Nashville all in preparation for our big move to Portugal. It was a long process that involved a lot of dreaming and research and planning, and it was all worth it. Here, we explain why we chose Portugal and left everything behind for a country we had never even visited before. We are Cheryl and Michael. To learn more about our music, ...
Thanks for the presentation. Im first generation of Portuguese and Italian. I was surprised you touched the subject of Hawaii...very few people knows about. Obrigadinho!
I love your videos, the way you show and share the culture and history of Portugal is amazing. Btw, a band called Petrus Castrus is one of the most underrated bands of the country, it was censored during the dictatorship and has been forgotten to this day.
Thank you! What a journey through time: architecture, music, musicians, and the spirit of the people, so exuberant, creative, reaching toward freedom. Love this awesome collage of events and architecture, and musical inspiration.
You talked of the portuguese guitar... you should have mention the great Carlos Paredes, he was a genius!
This was a lovely video... If you intend to make a follow-up video (or maybe you already have) regarding the extraordinary muscial creativity that has come out of Portugal, then you will no doubt soon be mentioning Madredeus. You may have already heard their exquisite musicianship coupling unparalleled compositional genius with superbe singing talent without being traditional Fado ( I choose my words carefully). I won't mention names, there are other bands and individuals of immense talent, but most would agree Madredeus really occupies a special place in Portuguese music since the 80's.
Dom Dinis was also known as "O Lavrador" (The Farmer) for ordering the plantation of pine trees near the coast, to protect it of erosion, then used later in ship construction. Dom Duarte Pio is the current heir to the throne, married with Isabel de Herédia. their descendants are Afonso, Maria and Dinis. they still are very respected and loved by all portuguese, yet very wise in keeping themselves outside media focus and thus not widely known by foreigners.
There was so much to say about Dinis that we couldn't include it all! He was quite remarkable.
another great video - thank you for sharing the cultural richness and history of this very special country through your lens of music
Do a research about musica barroca portuguesa and Carlos Seixas. Not very well known, unfortunately.
Thanks for the tip!
Fernando Lopes Graça it's not barroque but a very famous composer from the early 1900's, here's a video performance by a netherland's choir singing in portuguese: ruclips.net/video/TedX_kY0yVo/видео.html
Well, Portugal is old even by European country standards but not 2000 years old. It is about 840 years old. I don't really know what Alliance with England you are referring to, but the Treaty of Windsor had already been established in 1386, give or take. However, I did enjoy the video .
We're not talking about Portugal as an established nation, but as a settled place, which occurred even before the Roman Empire. The Celts, Pre-Celts, Lusitanians, and so on, had some of the oldest settlements in Europe. Sorry for any confusion!
@musicianslife360 well, fair enough, although that starts to become a bit too vague for my personal taste. For many reasons, including current political ones, I like to make these distinctions as clear as possible (as much as history can allow).
Thank you for recognizing and appreciating our existence, history and culture. You are special and I am truly honored that you have choosen to live thru music, amongst us.
Thank you for sharing your culture with us!
Thank you for this fantastic video.
My dear friends, you are an amazing couple. I find the research work you've done incredible. It's very well structured and well done, especially considering the difficulty you must have had in finding sources written in Portuguese. Well done for your dedication and the quality shown in this work. I want to suggest two little-known gems from the older Portuguese musical landscape: Carlos Seixas, an 18th-century composer whose work you can find on RUclips (for example, Harpsichord Concerto in A Major), and the surprising case of the composer Vicente Lusitano, born in 1520, who was the first black composer (son of slaves) in the world to have his music published. After studying in Portugal, he went to Italy where he was a composer, music teacher, and music theorist. There is a Portuguese website called vicentelusitano, but there is also information available in English, as this is a case that is gaining more and more worldwide interest, and I think at some point someone wanted to make a film about his life. A hug and be happy in Portugal
EXCELLENT WORK. CONGRATULATIONS.
Amazing vídeo in short frames you describe Portugal 🇵🇹

Still here and loving it!
As a portuguese teacher as a foreign language and also music teacher, it's a real pleasure to find this video. I'm definitely going to share this with my students. Continue the good work, please ❤

Hi. In the city of the Templars, Tomar, there is a music festival called (BONS SONS) in which they transform an entire village (Cem Soldos) into a stage. There is also the Festa dos Tabuleiros, held every 4 years at the beginning of July, etc. In Évora, Arraiolos Carpet Making is National Intangible Cultural Heritage since September 2021. In Sines on the Alentejo Litoral there is the Festival Músicas do Mundo (World Music).
Thanks for these wonderful suggestions! Very timely as we have a festivals video coming soon.
Obrigada!
De nada!
My parents retired to Santo Tirso years ago (my mom is Portuguese). It is a very nice town. Ask for "pivetes" at Moura, Santo Tirso´s almond cookies, and the bread could be amazing but you should know the bakeries...
Quem? Quem perguntou aos americanos?
Another interesting places, some of them, of course: Tomar, Sintra, Marvão, Évora, Coimbra, Lagos, Sines, Vila Nova de Cerveira, Cascais, Ericeira, Nazaré, Valença, etc
Thanks for the great suggestions! We've been to some of them, and we agree!
thanks for avoiding the hype of the 2 most touristic one's, thinking moving to a portuguese village myself
Thanks, we will definately check out Santo Tirso on our next scouting trip in June.
Hope you enjoy it! We love the small town feel but closeness to Porto.
Thank you so much for this video. We are still about two to three years away from moving to Portugal, and your videos have been very helpful.
Glad we could help! Thanks for watching!

Such a great video! Thanks for showcasing Omnichord. It's exciting to see its legacy being appreciated! <3
@@OmnichordRecords Thanks for supporting and promoting original music!
First, as a Portuguese born abroad, thank you for this video. Second, congratulations to Cheryl for pronouncing the names in Portuguese (and I'm not the first to do so) Third, Portugal is rich in history, culture and landscape. Fourth, many music festivals such as Vilar de Mouro, Ilha do Ermal, Paredes de Coura (all in Minho), Marés Vivas Festival in Gaia, Super Rock Super Bock in Sesimbra, Bons Sons Festival in Aldeia de Cem Soldos, Sol da Caparica Festival in Costa da Caparica, Cooljazz in Cascais, Musicas do Mundo in Sines and Porto Covo, Sudoeste festival in Zambujeira do Mar, and many others, some of which were named by you. You show Monsanto, in Idanha-a-Nova, which someone called the Flintstone village, not only because it has the title of the most Portuguese village, but also because it is part of the setting for House of Dragon.
@@carlberna48 this is Cheryl- thank you! And thank you for all of those valuable details-you’re hired as our new research assistant! 😄 Thanks again

Hello! I’m so happy I found your RUclips channel, while still exploring Portugal. My friend and I are in VDC, and hope to stop in your town on our way to Porto. I really like your vibe and style. Wishing you all the best as you become settled into your new home, and community🌸
As a portuguese, I am very grateful for your admiration of this small, yet beautiful hidden gem cities. obrigada for the video
@@albertinaloureiro3548 a lot of the beauty of Portugal is found when you step away from the big cities. Thank you for watching! 🙏🏻
Even the smaller cities in the Algarve have beautiful festivals; like the festival of light in Lagoa. Festivals do not have to be HUGE, to be good. Many councils spend astronomical amounts of local tax payers money to bring in expensive, big name artists; to the expense of funding hospitals and care for the homeless. These large events cost the local community dearly. It’s a fine line to tread. None the less, some of those festivals look wonderful, I must say.
Eh pá, assim as pessoas vão descobrir que Portugal não é só Lisboa+Porto+Algarve.
Yes, this the real Portugal. 🙏
My dear friends, I'm stoked you're coming to make music here! I really hope you love it and get super inspired. You guys blew me away with how much you know and care about our culture. Take it easy and rock on!😎😎

great video - thank you for taking the time to dig around, research and share - Portugal is rich in culture, and there are so many interesting projects and creative artists to discover and support - well done on finding these vibrant creative communities and events around the north and central zones - there are many more for future episodes - i also look forward to you discovering similar in the south one day (I'm in Lagos)

Thank you for the suggestion! This video was just focused on the UNESCO -recognized cities for creativity. We'll definitely be exploring other cities in the future, and those are great recommendations!
@@NotJustSawdust So many places that are putting out art and culture. Thanks for the comments and for watching!
Great video guys!! But I would suggest you visit Ponte da Barca, not too far up river from Ponte de Lima. It is the heart of the accordion and concertina playing tradition of Northern Portugal, where most of the modern greatest players come such as Daniel Gonçalves, Ruka Nogueira and many others. It has quite a popular music and ballet school, where get this, 12 monthly classes will set you back a mere €18 bucks😮.😮😮They also host the yearly Celtic Festival, generally the end of every June, with great Celtic musical artists present. Furthermore, the village is just gorgeous and my daddy's family is all from there.😊 It is also the ancient home of Fernão de Magalhães ir Magellan... (yes..the one that circumnavigated) as his aunt, which claimed his fortune after his death, was from the parish of Magalhães, on the hills of Ponte da Barca, parish where my family hails going back to the XVI century. You must visit and enjoy Ponte da Barca.❤
Thank you so much for the suggestion--we've been planning to check out Ponta da Barca!
@musicianslife360 It's a cool little place..I am sure u will love it..from there you can serpentine your way thru Gerês National Park where the wild horses run wild and come across the road to visit. Love the place!
@@Alfablue227 Sounds amazing!
@@musicianslife360 It is really.
Great Video. Too bad you didn't put up maps so we could see where in Portugal these wonderful cities were located.
Thanks for watching! The recognized cities are actually all in northern and central Portugal (coastal and inland).. That's a great suggestion about including maps!
