Building Custom Cyclekart Wheels With Upgraded Buchanan Spokes
In this video I am building a custom set of CycleKart wheels that will look a bit like my inspiration car, 1961 Ferrari Sharknose.
I am using OEM Yamaha XT250 and XT200 (1980 and 1983) front hubs and 16" Honda reproduction steel rims, mated with Custom Length 8ga Buchanan's Spokes.
Wheel Link: amzn.to/4gVeuMr
Some important notes on the Yamaha Hubs: the XT250 have 37MM bearings, the XT200 are 35MM. The hub adaptors from Renegade are designed for the 37MM Bearing. Keep that in mind when sourcing your hubs. I ended up with 2 of each so, it worked out.

  • @justinskywalker
    @justinskywalker 3 месяца назад

    Seems to me that for the people that want to make changes they should build a car to "spec" first and then start looking at modifications at performance upgrades. Find out how good the car works before you decide to make it something else entirely. I imagine that just putting in a bigger, more powerful engine just creates a cascade effect of other things that need to be upgraded to compensate for the additional power from the bigger engine. Better suspension, bigger brakes, front brakes, better/bigger tires, beefier hubs and axles, frame reinforcement. All these things that put you right back to where you started in terms of the power:weight ratio, just in a much more expensive package. I too, am looking at building my first cycle kart and asked all these questions and after thinking about it came up with the same answers. The cars are meant to be cheap(ish), fun to drive, but also rewarding to build and something of an artistic endeavor.

    My dad used to race go-karts back in the 80s- early 90s running 5hp Briggs and Stratton motors and all the ways small engine dudes find top get just even the smallest percentage of gains out of these small engines never ceases to amaze me. But a few fractions of a percent, aggregated over many iterations and modifications really starts to add up to big gains.

    • @stevevinson6030

    So sad. When I first came across cycle carts I felt I could be competitive spending abour 2500 bucks. Affordable fun racing with others in exactly the same spec cars. Awesome. And instead it has devolved into a car that is over engineered and super esxpensive. I want to to see how much you have sopent on these cars. Expensive alloys, complex suspensions. Hand made custom bodies. FFS way to make a fun grassroots everyman's racing series into another rich guy hobby. FACK!

    • @stevevinson6030
      @stevevinson6030 3 месяца назад

      You can build anyway you want. I have not spent more than $2500 on my first cyclekart, inflation now makes those same parts closer to $3500. If you build it the way the Stevensons did back in 1995, you will spend about $2500, that is with a plywood body and crappy Azusa spindles and hubs, you will have to bend or weld your own front axle and source springs from a scrap yard. But it can be done for cheap, many have done it.

    • @RomanBuchok
      @RomanBuchok 3 месяца назад

      @@stevevinson6030 Ok I get you can build a car for that. The problem is as a driver / racer can you be competitive in a 2500 dollar car against those that spend 5,000 10,000 or more.

    • @stevevinson6030
      @stevevinson6030 3 месяца назад

      Yes, absolutely they can. I have never seen a CycleKart that I thought cost more than $4k in parts to build, that is for a kart with every bell and whistle, most of the expensive stuff doesn't make it faster. Headlights, electric start, differentials, all the little do dads that make it look cool, all cost performance. So I think your overthinking this a bit.

      this is the only EBAY vendor we recommend, the other guy who advertises US STOCK has had some quality issues reported by other cyclekarters. www.ebay.com/itm/360470589040?media=COPY&mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=NIOOI2KxTzO&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=8fFASmGdS4C&var=&widget_ver=artemis

    I am going to assume since your back axle is fixed, you adjust your rid height by the length of your shacl;es ?

      The shackles can make small adjustments. Ride height is more effected by the spring tension and how you build your spindles.
