Welcome! Look around and find something to learn!
I'm Dr. Vullo - my students called me Dr. V. and my friends call me Ron. Let's be friends!
For my entire career I worked in Learning, Technology, and Information Science. The last 19 years of my career as a university computing professor. Now that I'm retired I have decided to share some of my knowledge and life's experience, together with my daughter Michelle (@Fleecimals) with all of you. Although my career has been based on digital technology, I have always maintained a connection with the analog. With making, repairing, restoring, cooking, growing, etc.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel and give a like to any of my episodes that you've enjoyed!

Lab Bench Restoration Supercut
Since a significant number of viewers watch all three lab bench restoration videos, I've edited them all together into this supercut which, is long so it may just put y'all to sleep. 😂 (If so, then we'll just call it ASMR, OK? 😉) In this combined 3 episode supercut I restore a surplussed lab bench like the one that you've seen me using in my workshop. I talk about getting started buying tools and do a lot of sanding. More sanding, homemade wipe-on polyurethane varnish for the legs, and black paint for the top. (Sorry about the audio quality in portions of this video. I did my best to improve it, but I myself have significant hearing loss, so it's difficult for me to make those sorts of ad...

Making Cabernet Sauvignon at Home
Просмотров 4416 месяцев назад
Cabernet Sauvignon is my go-to wine choice, so when my sweet daughter saw my Aldi Grape Juice (Concord) Wine video (ruclips.net/video/G27TYc82618/видео.html) she bought me a kit for making cab sauv. 😁 The process began with sanitizing all of the equipment, diluting the grape juice concentrate down to 6 gallons at normal juice strength, adding some Bentonite (a "fining agent" to bind with any pr...

Cooking Homemade Sicilian: Stuffed Artichokes
I love the video, but I have a question. I want to create something new, something that's never been made before. What is good software to use? Is there anything good that's free for Windows or Linux? Something GPL for example?
I use OpenSCAD. It's an open source (GPL) CAD app that is unusual in that it's based on writing code to generate the objects. Which given my background made it easy for me to get started with. openscad.org/
I'm trying this only with lemon and orange zest included. Really looking forward to it
Let me know how it comes out!
Does it work in the end?
I got as far as firing the LASER through the mirrors, etc. but stopped before working out the wiring for operation of the LASER itself through the control board because I obtained a new Cloud Ray LASER cutter. The combination of having an operational LASER cutter, the low viewer/subscription counts on the channel, and the amount of work involved in producing videos made continuing the project kind of pointless. I purchased a diode laser head thinking of maybe downsizing the project, but I've been busy with other retirement activities. I may just end up selling the uncompleted project locally sometime over the next couple years.
What do you think about electrolysis? I saw someone use it for rusty cast iron pans
Well, it certainly works, but always seemed like more trouble to me than it was worth. More worth the complexity and expense if you want to electroplate something.
Nice set up. My question has nothing to do with the pool. I see in the video something that looks like a tower structure. Are you a Ham Radio operator?
Thank you! I'm not sure what you're referring to as I have nothing resembling a tower. I am not a Ham Radio operator, though I did flirt with the notion way back when I was in High School. Just never could get get past the Morse Code. 😂
Nice video filled with good tips & trix. I'm setting up a solar powered pool heater right now and my goal is 30°C / 86°F in the pool. I'm starting with 250 meters / 820 feet of 20 mm / ¾ inch PEM hose in a flat rooftop setup. A 20V rainwater barrel pump (2,000 liters - 528 gallons / hour) will be connected directly to a solar panel, so it's a completely automatic system controlled and powered by the sun. No sun = no pump = no heating. Since I'm located at 60° latitude in the northern hemisphere,I'll guess it'll be some problems and math to solve along the way, but it'll be fun. Keep up your good work
Thank you! Good luck with your project and keep us posted on your progress!
You are very brave, running that beast on OS 8.x 😀 I've seen people have a lot more luck with OS 9.
The software I wanted to run needed 8. 🤷♂
Please tell me what paint you use
I don't remember, to be honest. Black semigloss I believe.
Que maravillosa travesía!❤
BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your stay!
Winter is so much better in the tropics! 🌴
this is great. you are the only person I have seen using a CO2 laser with the MPCNC. also, I was glad to see how the laser tube was packaged because I was thinking of ordering one here in Peru and was concerned about damage during shipment.
thanks for sharing your experience. I am starting building this in the amazon jungle in Peru.
Is the 6500 / 250 worth anything to-day? Found a tossed out 6500, a matching CRT (?), & some books, guides, & programs. Not sure if it works.
Monetarily, I don't know. (Maybe do a quick search on ebay.) As a learning tool, sure. For me the 8600 is valuable because it allows me to run software I wrote back in the 90s.
@@Dr.V. cool! Interesting! Thank you 🤓
you're welcome @@j.lietka9406!
Correction *A.i experiment*
I think A.I. is a way over-used and fundamentally poor descriptor for what this software actually does. As it was my entire computing career. But yes, this involved tools currently categorized as "A.I."
Very interesting! I’d definitely be interested in seeing more of that and even paying for the full story!
That's as close to getting monetized on RUclips as I'll ever get. 😂
Blame it on snow, don't blame it on driver
I never blame the driver. A plow throws a lot of snow with a lot of force - it's just the nature of plowing - and something that has to be allowed for on an annual basis around here. ☃
That is the easiest and quickest soup to make, ever! wow!
It really is!
I thought this was a lab bench made out epoxy like the ones on labs that looks like a regular wood bench
High Density Fiberboard with something like epoxy paint. (I'm old enough to have worked on lab benches with soapstone tops - they were the best. 😁)
@@Dr.V. That makes sense considering your process. Any ideas on how to resurface ones that are solid epoxy? I have a few that I love in my classroom, but they have been a bit chewed up and have some graffiti. Goof Off seems to lighten the background color, so its counter productive if students have used black sharpie or similar.
@@VictorQuesada-bl1xk I guess I'd try patching it with epoxy, then sanding and polishing it.
❤ love it
Very nice. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Nice video!
Thank you for the kind words!
WOW
Spoiler Alert: Final result was quite tasty! 😋
I miss how accessible those upgrades were. I just did the same to an early 2011 and have done countless upgrades to older Lenovos. Just found your channel, subscribed.
Thank you @kdoubt! Newer devices are not as upgradable, but in exchange we get smaller form factors, lower cost, and higher performance. There are always tradeoffs.
First Light!

I somehow missed a bunch of these, so I need to catch up! Congrats on getting your new toy all set up and running!!
Thank you!
UPDATE: In the video I installed MacOS X Snow Leopard (v. 10.6) which is what the laptop was running before I replaced the hard drive. Web sites refused to process requests from the browsers available for that version of the OS, which needless to say is problematic. So I installed the version of Catalina (dosdude1.com/catalina/) patched by dosdude1 to run on this unsupported machine. That allowed me to install more current software versions, but many apps crashed on launch. Fortunately dosdude1 had already identified the problem and provided the solution. From the terminal execute: sudo nvram boot-args=amfi_get_out_of_my_way=0x1 then restart. Now all is well and I am running Microsoft Office, Brave Browser, Facebook Messenger, iCloud, etc. with no issues. It is obviously a little bit slower than my 2019 MacBook Pro, but still very usable for many tasks.
Will it stain the pot if you use a stainless steel pot?
No, it shouldn't. With a stainless steel pot you can always use a steel wool cleaning pad to remove any stubborn residue.
@@Dr.V. Thanks a lot. The broth looks delicious BTW
Thank you @@TheMichaelLin - it is quite tasty!
I missed the step at 5:25 - was the OS installation on that external drive? Is that something easy to get for a Mac? I have never used a Mac and don't know much about their ecosystem?
I used the case and circuitry from the cheap external drive to connect the drive I removed from the laptop so that I could use Apple's Migration Assistant app to reinstall all my applications onto the new SSD. For the Operating system installation I used a DVD-ROM disc.
@@Dr.V. I didn't realize that the component prices were so inexpensive! I have an older ThinkPad that I'm running a flavor of linux on, but 256Gb HDD and 4Gb RAM is somewhat limiting - Maybe I'll give it a go!
@@scottmb99 Yeah, that's what made me say to myself "what the hell, I'll give it a try."
Cloudray's website states that this machine is 529 pounds. Is this correct? It seems pretty heave for this size of laser.
It is pretty heavy - it's a big steel box after all - but after disassembling and hauling it upstairs I believe the 529lbs is the shipping weight including all of the external components (chiller, blower, air assist compressor, etc.) and crate.
Typically these old school lab countertops are cast resin, very often impregnated with copious amounts of asbestos. Be careful. You can investigate the underside of the top which, if cast, will have been the top of the pour, and will have a soft rippled texture, sometimes with small bubbles.
It's so cute!!
And practical too!
Starting to get exciting! Had to laugh about you having to make your own grounding wire/connection - even high-end products like this . . .
Yeah, that one's a little head scratcher. 🤔
You should make dandelion syrup this year. My neighbor made some for us and it's so delicious!
What do you use it for?
@@Dr.V. Anything you'd use honey or syrup for. It's really good on vanilla ice cream :P
@@heathermulcahy258 I will have to give it a try!
omg! good thing you checked the grounding connection. What would have happened if you didn't ground it??
Probably nothing, unless something went wrong - then… well, there's high voltage in there for the LASER tube, so yeah. Dangerous.
So far nothing. I've been running mine for about a month now. I just went down and sure enough mine is the same way. I will remedy that problem post haste. Ground and neutral are almost electrically the same. They are tied together back in the breaker panel. Makes no sense why they didn't go ahead an run the ground inside the cabinet.
Gold!! I can't wait to see what you make with these beauties.
I haven't got any good ideas yet, but I'm open to suggestions!
It's like Lego, but with lasers!
Hurts even more if you step on it! 😂
Your LASER Cutter kit comes with Allen wrenches, just like my IKEA kits!
Some assembly required! 😂
I'm looking forward to seeing what project you'll tackle with it. Did you abandon the laser conversion plans of your MPCNC?
I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do with that, to be honest. It's a viable project, to be sure, but I lost patience (and burned up a lot of test targets 😂) trying to get the mirrors aligned. It's a dangerous process.
Nice! Can’t wait to see what you get up to with your new toy!
My wife is already making suggestions. 😂
Pew pew pew
🔥🔥🔥
Gotta have fun with lasers! I find after a long day with unrealistic and rude Patients I can come home and relax with the laser and make stuff. Puts me in a good mood!
Yeah, they're a fun and really useful tool!
Did the accuracy of mpcnc handle the laser well?
The accuracy issue I've struggled with is the height of the 4 corners, and therefore the leveling of the mirrors. This is likely my fault in not cutting the 4 corner conduit pieces to exactly the same length, so I may need to re-cut them.
@@Dr.V. Thanks. Awaiting a video update.
Doc V! It's been a while since we've heard from you, hope all is well and that you're just taking a YT break - hope to hear from you again soon!
Been on the beach in Costa Rica for the winter. 🌴 Got a possibility for a new project 🤞 to shoot, so we shall see.
@@Dr.V. Good place to be for the winter! Enjoy and see you when you fly back north . . . .
Yeah, pretty slow for Mac OS 8.6 standards. Time to install a Sonnet Tempo PCI to SATA, an SSD, more RAM and an ATI Radeon 7000 or 9000 series PCI video card. Let's not forget a G3 or G4 Sonnet Crescendo CPU Upgrade too and that Mac will really fly!
😂
@@Dr.V. Just stick with version 8.6, though. You could move up to Mac OS9 or 9.1, but I don't think you'll like the performance overall.
@@minty_Joe The reason for this project is for me to be able to run HyperCard, so I am happy with the version of the OS I have running. (Fun fact: I was one of the very first Mac Developers and Apple gave me 3 Macs for my lab back in 1984. I also consulted with their Advanced Technologies Group on what would have been the successor to HyperCard had the Web not changed everything.)
@@Dr.V. Oh nice! 😀 As far as I know, HyperCard should work under OS versions 8.x and 9.x. both are still the Classic environment (aka "Carbon"), although there may be some parts that were modernized for OS X compatibility (aka "Cocoa"). Version 9.2.x can be shoehorned in using OS9Helper, but it's a gamble with stability if you do that. I'd say 8.6 is perfect for compatibility and speed, at this time. I think it's HyperCard version 2.x.x that's out there still. The Macintosh Garden should have copies you can download and install.
@@minty_Joe Yeah, 9.x just adds extra weight that doesn't help me.
A dispetto del nome, è evidentemente NON kasher...
I was recently thinking about this, so glad for the update! BTW, how's your LASER cutter project going? Any interesting projects in that stream?
Thank you @scottmb99. I am in the alignment of optics phase (harder than it sounds, tbh) but have been slowed down by life in general interfering sadly.
@@Dr.V. Yeah, life is like that sometimes . . . and now that we're in full Holiday mode, Q1 2023 is going to be your first chance to get back to it, I bet!
@@scottmb99 I will be enlisting the assistance of my son-in-law (@Fleecimals) who has expertise in optics that I do not, so... 🤞
