9 FOOT STORM SURGE WHILE TIED TO THE DOCKS! HOW DID WE FARE?
Hurricane Helene was quite an anomaly. I have been through many hurricanes in Florida as well as other parts of the world and never had one quite like this. The storm surge from a hurricane so far out was unexpected, even though the modeling suggested it would be severe. I really didn't believe it. Luckily we planned for it anyways.

My very old Westerbeke 4.4 KW WMD diesel generator was smoking excessively under load and was getting worse over time. It also smelled like diesel fuel and was putting a slight oily sheen on the water. Almost certainly unburnt diesel from poor combustion. Fuel injectors were the main suspect. New injectors from Westerbeke are nearly $400 each. Many older Westerbeke generators are based on Mitsu...

Trawler DIY- Full Garmin marine electronics package pre-install overview
Hello mate, wonder if you can help me. I took my carburetor off and cleaned it , put it all back, took about 20 pulls, but it probably took time for the fuel to fill up. Anyhow, That skinny black pipe in the middle, is it some sort of overflow and there is also one more on top, the other side. Anyways l noticed they are both missing on mine. Just bought the motor in the summer. So l got it running, but that black pipe , the one you can see running down next to the fuel pipe has just started pissing out, l assume it is fuel and not water ,never checked. So if it is some overflow, its just pissing out fuel, any ideas, perhaps you know more what that pipe is and perhaps the other one , the other side on top. As l said mine are missing. Any idea whats going on ?
If you have fuel overflowing all the time the the float and needle is stuck. Take it back apart and make sure the little needle is properly in the little forks and that the needle is easy to move and the tip is not swollen.
@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 Hi again, thanks for the reply. I did check that the float was going up and down perfectly. If you mean the needle in the middle, unscrewed it and cleaned the little hole. Or do you mean another needle? somewhere.
@@swedishkev No I meant the float needle at 10:50 Thats mainly how fuel overfills
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 Hi again, so l have taken the float away and the pointed needle, did you say that was rubber, the pointed blaćk end. I could not see anything wrong and lm soaking that in brake cleaner, is that ok, or do l ruin that pointed rubber bit. Was hard to see, and was not sure if there was a little hole in that because you called it a needle seat, that's why lm soaking it. If l still have the problem tomorrow, when l reassemble, then l might as well order a new carb. They are as cheap as 40 dollars on Amazon.
Just an update, put all back together, float and needle seat looked fine, no blockages, and primed the bulb hard and now it just pisses out petrol, from that overflow nozzle, that has no pipe on it. Time to give up and order new carb. Best now for peace of mind. Could not trust that carb now. Thanks for helping.
Any stray current damage to your boat? Isn't your AC ground connected to your boat's bonding system?
Thanks for sharing this. I'm faced with a very similar situation. It seems scary to put the access port on the side of the tank. Just wanted to check in a year after your install... have you experienced any leaking at all? .. and how long would you expect the gasket to last being exposed to diesel all the time, or is it even an issue?
Still prefect. I expect the seal to last many many years. This particular access panel was chosen because it is rated to be below the fuel level. Keep in mind many large vessels have access port on the sides of tanks. And aircraft has dozens of access panels n the BOTTOM of tanks.
Have you run into a situation where the charge mos is off but the app is showing the cell temp higher than 32 degrees (40 degrees)? Can't get a charge into my battery right now as a result.
If the temp dips low enough to shut off the charge mosfet (32) it has to rise above 41f for a bit before the charge mosfet will turn on again.
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 Thanks. It's charging now but not sure why the heaters never came on.
Great job. I have watched your Epoch batteries videos as well and found the information very helpful. I purchased two of the 460s with Victron comms. Now I I need to figure out to charge the batteries. Most likely I will be changing my 120 amp alternator for a Balmar alternator in the tune of roughly 200 Amps and I already purchased the Balmar MC-618. I believe I also need the Victron Power In and Distribution-times two. I looked at the newer Orion XS DC to DC battery charger however I think it might be a duplication for the MC-618. Thanks again for your great videos!
Thanks my friend

Hi🤚
To not have floating docks to me is so weird tonight we just had a 22 ft tide swing stay safe and more boat projects plz I also did a bunch so we could trade project ideas
Yes, I am always amazed when I look at other places in the PNW and other high tidal areas like the bay of Fundy. The infrastructure and the huge pilings and catwalks on wheels are crazy..lol. Typically we have 2 to 3 foot tides. Floating docks are a rare luxury here.
Wow - that’s amazing ! Glad your boat came through ok. Did they kill the power to the pedestal before it went under water ?
Yes, they cut power when the water gets to the dock level. For my old lead acid batteries I would have wanted to keep power on as long as possible for having full batteries just prior to power being cut. I always imaging a scenario where water comes in and the bilge pumps have to run continuous. How long could they run? On my old lead acid...not long. 4,5,6,7 hours? On the new Epochs I am sure they could run for a few days. So in the future I will disconnect shore power at last prep.
Great Video, love the live shot and time lapse , always good to know exactly how the boat did during the storm. Good post storm debrief and observations. Your vids are always spot on and very helpful to us all. Thanks for taking the time and effort for the production . Let us know when ya head north, You'll always have a place to tie up at my dock on the Outer Banks of NC. Well Done.....Cheers
Well thank you. My goal is always just to share my own experiences. I dont share them to focus on me...but share them in the hopes that others, especially newer boaters, might gain just a bit of information that may help in the future or make boating more accessible to them. There is so much to learn in this boating world..lol.

good day! where can i find my victron id.?
Excellent video with spot on explanations! You sound like an AME. Did you ever hear that filling the carb bowl with oil over the winter is an extra protective measure?
No...but that sounds like a great idea. I cant remember what AME was but it was aviation IIRC. I was a Marine Crew Chief on CH-46E helos from 87-93 and have worked in aviation ever since.
I just let of some 6 year old flares . One made a very loud bang & went out immediately. I think it exploded rather than burned. This is dangerous guys .
These were pulled chord hand flares.
Yeah..None of the pull cord ones i tried worked. 100% failure. I would definately dispose of those.
Be careful certain devices can be locked to the original owner and it can be impossible to remove without their authorisation
They were all locked. But there are procedures to undo all of it. All of this stuff is up and running in my boat now for some time and working great. Thanks for the reply.
Great video, good information.
Thanks brother. You wont need any of it since you have that fancy new diesel with 15 hours on it..lol.
I have the same issue with my marine genset. Makes me think I should check the injectors...
Big thing for this is to diagnose the smoke type. But if the smoke is unburnt diesel usually its poor injector performance or the exhaust elbow near the injector nozzle that is caked up with carbon to the point it restricts exhaust flow. In addition..look to ensure the intake is not blocked.
Great video ! I’ve always sent my injectors off so it was nice to see how to do it myself
I guess it really depends on the injector. These bosch style are very easy and its covered well in the Westerbeke manual.
You have every tool and gadget. I like it !!!!!!
I like my tools and gadgets 😁
Excellent Video! No doubt the post repair smoke was just legacy buildup in the cylinder and exhaust. A couple questions: Were you driving the A/C directly from the generator output? or is this being filtered through and AC -> DC -> AC process? Can you run the A/C off the battery bank? and if yes, approximately how long, over night? How many hours on the generator? Most of these need repair from lack of use. Still looking for my boat.
In this case I am running the AC right from the generator. But it gets fed through the Victron Multiplus2 since the Victron unit is a "passthrough" inverter charger. But its all AC all the way. Yes I can run the AC off the battery no problem. I can run the AC and the microwave as long as they dont start at exactly the same time. With the 2 Epoch 460AH (920AH total) I can run the AC unit anywhere from 5 to 9 hours depending on settings and cycling. You could almost certainly get through the night. Problem is you have to put it all back in. That could mean 5 hours of gen run time. I am working to add additional charger capacity right now. DC to DC charger as well as Solar. Id like to be able to reduce charge time from nearly empty to full in less than 4 hours. That would mean a continuous 200-250 amps of charging. Ill have that soon and will cover it here.
Very helpful. Thanks!
My Mercury keeps flooding itself, I think. Is your needle valve loose on that little metal ridge where the float is or should the needle valve be snug? It's got 2 little arm wires that I'm wondering if they should be tighter on there if that makes sense.
The needle valve attached to the float should be free moving. Of its snug that will cause flooding for sure.
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 well I ended up buying another carburetor and I'm going to install it this weekend. I thought the needle valve was moving pretty freely but I just bit the bullet and hopefully this resolves my issue.

@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 yep I will make sure to put the spacer on. It was $60 from southmarineparts. I sent them the model number to confirm the carb.
@@jza80king you really cant beat that...lol. If you are cruising away from home it may be wise to even have a spare..lol.

I will. I have been slacking lately. But I will have more of an overview of the system as a whole soon. Thanks.
I concur regarding the GC100. I have a Carver 406 while it is well within the distance specified for Wi-Fi, the camera cuts out when I need it the most. Useless camera even after the update form 2018. I have tried all channels 1-8 for Wi-Fi on my 8612-chart plotter. I even got a new one sent to me from Garmin. I really thought it would be more flexible being Wi-Fi, it is not acceptable INHO. Great comparison video though.
I just amended my opinion in the comments. Its terrible..lol. Thanks for reminding me!
Buying a trawler in Clearwater, see ya out there.
That’s brilliant.
I used this for years and it held up great!
Thank you for making the video! I'm new to all of this so I may be missing something, but why not just use an absorption of 14.2 or so, which would be enough to trigger the 100% reset, low enough that the charger would actually get to that voltage (so it doesn't get stuck at absorb forever), but not so high as to trigger the over-voltage charge shutdown? Then you avoid the drift and need to manually reset like this. I'm about to upgrade my house from AGMs to a single Epoch Dual Use 300ah battery -- and the manual recommends 14.2. I will have some Victron charging equipment (DC to DC off engine battery/alternator and MPPT 100/30 solar, plus a Kisae inverter/charger for shore power), but I don't plan to use Victron communications, and I only have the single battery so I don't have to worry about multiple batteries getting out of sync.
Your planned battery doesn’t have this full charge protection warning/charge disconnect. The parameters are mentioned at about 6 mins. Edit: I amend my statement to “I don’t think your planned battery has this…” (if @mvintrigue isn’t sure, neither am I! 😉)
As Jim Duke mentioned the full charge protection parameters are greater than 14.0 volts, less than 3.6 amps, for more than 10 seconds. You can charge to 14.2 but you will enter into full charge protection. Again if you have a single battery not an issue but with multiple batteries you would need to clear the FCP. I dont believe the Essentials or the Dual purpose have full charge protection
Good info - thanks !
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101The 300AH Essentials will open the charge FET at 14.70 battery voltage or 3.70 cell voltage. The SOC counter will reset at 14.20 so there is need charge to the protection level. Also, the 300AH Essentials calculate SOC strictly on AHs withdrawn and like the 460AH its not very accurate.
Discount code still works. Used it today!
@@ErnieBueno-gq4dg yes it does! Thanks a bunch.
if i have Garmin gpsmap 741xs can i buy the charts navionics vision plus or i must buy the older one charts? thnx
@andrazsulic1992 double check...but I believe you can only use the G3 vision charts. But they are very good too.
why use wood? why not pvc or starboard?
Both of those would be great too. But the epoxy coated wood was very stiff and I had all materials on hand. IMO the PVC sheets and Starboard aren't quite as rigid for the same thickness. I have used starboard a bunch and I love it. Started using PVC recently and for some stuff that works great too. For my battery trays I used 1/2 birch that had several layers of Biaxial fiberglass and those came out super strong.
The first 300 series came out in 1975 and was out only 2 years I have a 300 I had to replace the battery and the starter and fuel pump mine is also rusted but not worried about it because it's gonna be used in the yard I w not as bad as this one is but it too has a Kohler engine and runs off a car battery I also have to replace the ignition and my brother had to disable my volt meter because the resister was bad on the back of the meter itself when my starter locked up it fried everything my ignition ignition module fuel pump etc and so when I get it back from my brother I will have to do a video on it
I just bought a 36v for my trolling motor. Can’t wait to get rid of all 3 of my heavy trolling batteries and just have one for the trolling motor. I wish I knew about this brand before. I bought a different brand for all my marine electronics and it’s fine. But would have loved to support this American company with that battery as well and have both of mine run off the same app. I’m still using a group 31 AGM battery for starting my OptiMaxx, because it’s still not approved by mercury to use lithium starting batteries, even though some people do it with that motor. My boat is still under warranty and I don’t want to chance anything.
I wish I knew too..lol. I paid a ton of money for those Dakotas. BTW the Epoch is still perfect.
Thanks! A quick question: would you recommend still having an external battery monitor such as the SmartShunt, or can the batteries and Victron comms provide that data? Thanks again, very informative video.
Apologies Ross. I am in Yellowstone and cell coverage is spotty. You absolutely need the smart shunt. What I have discovered about Epoch and most built in bluetooth soc meters is the parameters for reset to 100 are set very high and of course can not be changed. This SOC data from the Epoch BMS is what is exported to the cerbo. The ability to set the smart shunts up for full charge detection makes them much more reliable, especially since the 460 Marine does not like to be charged above 13.9. Also the onboard shunt does not detect amps in or out of less than 1 amp. So even at float when the MP drops into float after a full charge the Epoch shunt does not detect the .2 or .3 volt momentary up and voltage fluctuations as lights and other items go off and on. This results in the Epoch soc being off over time. But the victron shunt is still 99.x%. I actually ended up not using comms for charge control. I use the standard MP2 programming and smart shunt for control. The comms work, but will result in charging the voltage to the voltage set in dvcc in limit charged voltage, which you have to set to 13.9v it will reach 13.9 and stay there and not drop to float. Similar to some other simpler batteries that import data to dvcc right now my boat is sitting on SP most of the time so I want to float it. I have watched your channel many times. I suppose you may be doing something with these soon. If that's the case, when I get back from Yellowstone Tuesday if you need to chat about some particulars let me know. There are a few other must know point such as FCP or full charge protection that the Epoch and newest Litime and others are begining to use. If not set right can result in uneven discharge by huge margins.
I have a couple older tractors with points distributor. Soon I'm gonna ad a couple magnets to the front pully , and use CDI for the ignition on them. 3000 RPM tachs are not very expensive. Can I simply add a haul effect sensor, and wire it off of it , and set the tach for a 4 cylinder? You explained the reason for the extra thingie because its a tach made for the alternator. When everything is adjusted right the points work fine , but in the most inopportune time they come out of adjustment and you're in the dark. Trying to adjust them.
Probably. As long as the tach is adjustable. The need for the other thingy is because the alernator signal is not even close to what a typical motor is.
Our TR-1 won't power up. Might be the power on button and I have a replacement ordered. If not that and the board is bad I will have to consider replacing with Reactor 40. Is the GHC 50 whatever really necessary? I would prefer to not use it and do as normal similar to TR-1.
Is it possible to connect the RJ45 labeled "Victron" on the 12V 460Ah battery directly to one of the two VE.Bus RJ45's on the Victron MultiPlus-II and have the battery to control the charge settings, or do you need the Cerbo GX?
The cable does not appear on their website, did you have to call them to order it?
This video is now somewhat old. Epoch now includes the cables on thier harness when they ship all batteries. If you didnt get one...just call them and they will send it out. Dont leave a message...just keep calling until someone picks up.
Quick question. In my current setup I have two large batteries. You mentioned Positive and Negatives being the same length. The installer made the round trip the same based on orientation. Meaning one of my positive cables is the same length as my one of my negative cables and the other battery is the opposite. When I asked about it he said it is the round trip length of cable in total. Is this a good method or should I buy some more cable and change it. All cabling goes to common busbars for positive and negatives and then all cabling to the inverters are exactly the same length on both sides of the equation.
Actually I think that probably fine. If you draw a decent sized load just look at the app and make sure amps relatively equal in thier load sharing. They will never be perfect...but if they are close thats good enough. For instance one batt pulling 60 amps and the other 61 amps...close enough.
TY, One other question if you don't mind. I am full-time and will be swapping these out for my existing batteries. The manual says do not connect them to my system until they are fully charged. Is this really necessary or as long as I stay on shore power until they are full charged I should be fine? (minimal 12 VDC draw) I have 2 multiplus and 2100 watts of solar and thought they would do the best job bringing them up to charge especially connected to the Cerbo. Thoughts?
@@rjoustra1150 If your in parallel its not all that critical. Series it is super critical. If you can turn the charge amps down a bit to say....20 amps per batt for the last 5% that would be good. But as long as you use the 13.9 absorb and 13.5 float you will be ok.
great job guys....loved it
