Attempting to Climb Mt. Jefferson 7-14-2024
Made my first attempt at climbing Mt. Jefferson and packed some cameras. Made it to the red saddle. The traverse was getting pretty soft so I decided to turn around there but I got in my own fun traverse getting to the red saddle because I went around the left side instead of going up the right side like how I got back down.
A lot longer video than I normally upload but I have some timestamps below and felt like keeping it long. My favorite part is the traverse I do at around 32 minutes getting up to the red saddle.

Yaesu FT-891 HF Manpack - KG7JQY
Просмотров 27 тыс.Год назад
Here is my HF Manpack built off a Yaesu FT-891 with the Armoloq TPA-891B frame in the High Ground Gear Instant-Access PRC-117G pouch. Very much inspired by The Tech Prepper KT1RUN, this setup has been working for me really well and if I could only have one HF radio setup, it would probably be this. Not the most packable, but it is packable and offers up to 100W for when I need it.
My journey getting into SOTA - Summits On The Air - KG7JQY

This is my story of getting into summits on the air. I plan on doing a lot more activation, this is a great way of training practical applications of field radio. The 2m SSB from the top of middle pyramid was a lot of fun. At the end I show the SSTV test transmission I did with KK7EEJ - KG7JQY

Work in progress of my manpack for tactical style communications for VHF/UHF ham radio. I'll make an update as soon as I get the H250 handset to work with the QYT KY-8900. Shout out to The Tech Prepper KT1RUN for his videos with similar manpack setups that I took some inspiration from for this project.

Making headway in the Ham Shack and the solar system is finally installed and is now completely off grid. Definitely like the forethought of adding extra power connectors. I always find them needing to hook up something else in a pinch. I love the ideas of extra lighting connections, tough to find rigs, even QRP rigs with lighted buttons. I'm kind of shocked the IC-705, for the kind of money they're asking for it, doesn't have backlit buttons.

Seems more suitable for weak signal HF Data, that said, interesting? I Iike it. As long as you have permission, seems you could do PSK31, FT8, etc over the Repeaters and Echolink, IRLP if equipped. I don't know why you'd want to do that? but it is interesting. I can't see the Winsystem embracing IT!

What functionality does the GI handset offer that the stock mic does not? I get it and I'm nostalgic too, having retired after 22 years of service, but I can't see the benefit of the GI style handset over the stock mic - especially when you take into account all the controls on the stock mic.

I think the biggest one would be being able to use it like a headset as far as not just blasting radio through the speaker if youre somewhere busy in public. Obviously you could achieve the same effect other ways with headsets but that would be one benefit. Plus its designed to be in the field (and it just being cool is a good enough reason on its own right to mess with)

@@JackTradeMark I do get the coolness factor. Our gear, though made by the lowest bidder, held up pretty good back in the day. I joined in 1988, so ALICE packs, fanny packs, web gear, shelter halves, and all that good old TA-50 are right up my alley. That coyote brown bag you have is a very popular style, and it was my first HF go bag for my X6100. Great video, btw!

@@doesstuffoutside So yesterday the mountain itself was clear of snow for all the actual climbing. On the PCT once you get out of the burn there’s still a decent amount of snow on the PCT, was firm enough it wasn’t too big of an issue, I wasn’t post holing (too badly) but idk how it will be in a week. I saw 4 people all day on the PCT, I had the entire actual mountain to myself (short of a dozen mountain goats chilling at the base of the mountain) Idk if you were going to do it with protection. I didn’t bring any protection and just went for it. The chimney wasn’t that bad but the crawl kind of sucked with my big pack and if I did it again, I would probably like to have protection. I had HF with me in my pack but when I got to the chimney I just shoved my HT in my pocket and dropped my pack for the climb up and picked up my 4 contacts on 2m and got out of there since it was a little sketchy up there on top. Anything else you want to know or pictures let me know, my email is jackmarkee@hotmail.com

I am looking to build 2x manpacks for relatively cheap and I’m thinking of copying what you have done here. Do you have any issues with the antenna being so close to the head unit? Or the hand mic being so close to the antenna? A few years ago I tried doing something similar with a different radio and I had some weird “noise” with everything being so close together.

@@JackTradeMark Nice! You should be able to find some places that haven't been activated yet I would think!! I just found a SOTA peak (W5N/SI-019, Coyote Benchmark) that's on Kirtland Air Force Base, but appears to belong to the Dept of Energy. It may be in a restricted area, which would help explain why there's been no activations yet. Looks like the closest, easiest, non-activated SOTA to me, so hopefully I can get access to it for my first SOTA activation. If I can get access, I'd hate for it to be 2m only, so I may have to get the FT-891 I've been thinking about and have it be my first HF contact as well. How sweet would that be right?
