Not a big radio guy but that demonstration was awesome. Glad guys actually train their skills practically and not just dry fire and comm checks from their bed rooms. Subbed
Nice setup. I'm using my FT-857D with a PortableZero bag and rails. I have a set of stacked top boxes on my 2018 KLR650. My radio gobag and radio goodies fit in the larger lower box. My 60W folding RockPals solar panel fits in the smaller top box with my motorcycle repair kit.
Love the setup! Just came across your channel, I just bought the 891 waiting for it to arrive, looks like I'm going to have to watch more of your vids. Saw that klx300, nice as well. 73 KY4DOC
I just picked up an 891 and planning on a manpack configuration. I don't understand why place the radio/armoloq in a bag if you're already putting it in a 5.11 bag.
The bag makes the unit well contained. I only use the backpack carry it when hiking it out to the field but its its own contained unit. You could integrate the system into a backpack but that could limit how you use it in some ways. Like ill plop this on my ham shack desk and plug in an antenna and just run it how it is.
Excellent kit. Can you operate the pack on 2m/440 while walking? What antenna would you use while man-mobile on these bands--would you need to support and insulate the antenna from contact with your body?
Sure if you're under like 10 watts. Otherwise it's not really safe to be that close and what antenna would to use anyway? An HT? Just makes more sense to carry an HT at that point.
Definitely like the forethought of adding extra power connectors. I always find them needing to hook up something else in a pinch. I love the ideas of extra lighting connections, tough to find rigs, even QRP rigs with lighted buttons. I'm kind of shocked the IC-705, for the kind of money they're asking for it, doesn't have backlit buttons.
I dont on my homemade ones and get away with it but its definately a good idea to have. Sometimes ill run somewhat of a "dirty balun" by coiling up the coax near the antenna to potential help a little with like 10 5" diameter wraps or so.
I'm trying to get a couple of tops made for the 117G bag ,I have one . But I would like to be able to cover the top of the radio. What I'm asking is if I get so made, would you be interested in doing a review on it? It won't cost you nothing, Gary KD9WTH 73
I've been talking to women at High Ground ,Probably 8 -10 times telling her my ideas, and giving her measurements and telling her that there's 300,000 hams in United States and 7,000.000 in the world. I told her I need about 4+ to hand out to get some reviews from guys in the field (aka ) MANPACK PORTABLE on them and go from there. She's been taking notes and going to be talking to Enginerring staff .So I let you know ,when I hear back from her , You'll be the first one to get one.
On my setup, I took and put a hole in the bag, and in the adman pouch ,I had to cut out one piece of the molle to do that .then the hole 3/4 on both, then I sown around the holes, then I put in 3/4 rubber grommets so I could run my wire to the battery and still have room to run a mike extension cable though it if I want
I like the pack setup. I am working on one that is heavily influenced by tech prepper also and I have a pack similar to the one you have your radio in so more ideas thanks. Something I have noticed in most manpack videos is the lack of any kind of first aid stuff. Do you not carry something even as basic as Band-Aids or does everyone just not mention it in the videos. Or do you carry it in something else like on your belt? KI7SSO
Good job dude, I run a very similar setup, completely different antenna plan though. Have you tried running digital in a hide site like that? I’m interested to know what you’re using to keep the confuser dry.
Thanks. I haven't done specifically that yet but that sounds pretty close to what some of what i plan on doing soon. And yeah id have definately needed better rain shelter in that activation if i was going to pull out a computer.
thats the High Ground Gear PRC 117G pouch. But you could also probably make most 117g pouches work and you can find some of those used reasonably cheap
No tuner, just resonant antenna. I have tuners for my other radios but for this i omit it. Does save a lot of weight and bulk in the field. Specifically for this i have dipoles made for 80m (upper ssb section) Linked 20/40 10m 6m That gets me on enough of the bands to mostly do what i want. Ill make more antennas for it eventually for the other bands.

That's one thing with amateur radio - the possibilities are endless. Nicely done for a man-pack HF rig!
That's solid. Also a fan of The Tech Prepper. Good info.
Nice setup. Like you, I’ve modeled my man pack after the Tech Prepper.
Yo! I love it. I have the Armoloq on my 818 setting it up as a manpack
The radio cage looks nice. Will have to get one to update my to go bag
This radio might be first only rig . It’s just has so much power

Do you use 2m/70cm or just hf
A very good and cool demonstration of it at use outdoors❤
Thanks. Can you take the battery out so we can set the total wiring setup please. Great work….
Cool stuff Jack - Keep producing video's.
Can you go over how you wired up the battery and accessories please?
Good work! That’s a solid setup.
Awesome set up !!! Looking forward to trying to duplicate it for myself ! Thanks for sharing !

Very smart about the lights.
Nice video. Great audio. Great content. Nice job. I want to buy that pack for my FT-891....
Its a pretty nice and usable setup for the 891 with the frame and the bag. I recommend it.
Right on, love it!

Awesome, my 12 and 15 yr daughters just built one, it's great.
You need to have solar charging capability in the pack to make your go bag really mobile and sustainable 👍

I just bought a 891 with nelson end fed 9:1 random wire, his RF choke for it and a Mat 30 auto tuner

Isnt heat a concern here? What are you using to dissipate heat build up?

really cool, do you run a 1:1 unun for your dipoles ?

What size solar panel are you pairing with this?
how much does it weigh?
Nice setup 👌 👍
great video! Keep er coming!
Can you explain how you set up the electrical in the rig? You using a splitter or a distro box?
I basically just soldered all the wires together

what Bracket is mounted to your ft-891 & where did you purchase it? Appreciate your video! Thank you.
Its the standard armoloq bracket for the bnc and cw relocation that optionally comes with the kit for the 891

I always carry a pretty robust ifak including a cat tq with me pretty much everywhere i go. I just keep things compartmentalized
That's what I plan to do also thanks for the video and reply

any links to where you are getting all these items?

Thank you very much, I’m attempting to make a man pack for a MTX400 40W radio, I hope I can make it work.
Can you send me what lights you bought and how you set that up
Theyre just little 12v automotive lights i soldered jst connectors on. Just search like "23mm led 12v" and youll find them in various colors.
Hi I now have this radio the armor lock cage . What battery size are you using in this video ? Thanks again
Im using a 12ah lifepo4, running reasonably low power it lasts long enough for me but depending on your needs, you might need a bigger battery
@@JackTradeMark thanks so much now I have good idea where to start. Thanks again for the prompt reply
@@JackTradeMark What is the brand and model of the charger you use to charge battery?
@@YayaOrchid it came with the battery, no name chinese, i guess the equivalent one i just found was "talentcell"

Nice rig. Is there a version for women, too? 😏

Nice setup! Where did you get the pack and the frame????
Sorry, KJ6SKA!
What pouches are you using for the mic and HT?
The mic pouch is just a random amazon chinese molle pouch for a radio, the ht pouch is a eagle industries smoke pouch
Thanks!
