„Stunning“? „Thrilling“? More fitting would be noisy and mediocre, and it would be of advantage to accept the score rather than to impovise in an amateurish way.

Sadly, I really do not rate this piece. It takes almost 14 mins to say almost nothing: it's a lot of fleering-about to no purpose! I wouldn't want to hear another work by Mendelssohn based on this.

Thank you to have nicely added my modest recording of this great work from Rachmaninoff. And yes, it is intentional that I play the score using the LH B's mentioned instead of Ab's, so to intensify the feel wanted by the composer. I initially dedicated this recording to my dad who died suddenly when I was a teenager.

One of my favourite pieces by Franz Liszt; first time to hear it performed so exquisitely well. Though I love the orchestral version also, the 'meaning' of it all is best 'consumed' in the way Benjamin Grosvenor brings this Sonata to life... Thank you so much...!!!

Interesting Hewitt plays staccato at measure 55. I've listened to another performance where the bass clef notes were played staccato much earlier say around measures 9 through 13 and, at the same time, playing the treble clef notes smoothly. Interesting. I don't recall seeing any staccato symbols. Maybe that has something to do with the music as it sounded on a harpsichord.

  • @tubularificationed

Sounds somehow wrongly initially, as if a beginning would be chopped off, and we landed straight in the middle of a piece (in its coda, i.e. a recapitulation of a theme). That shows, that she's not a composer after all. If her pieces seem prone to such architectural glitches. Which is a pity, because her melodic imaginations and their realization for piano are very likeable here 👍 But it also shows, that having pretty melodic ideas are not enough. Structural traits of a piece are not something for only professors and their students, but they really have an effect on how a piece succeeds also for the average 'consumer'.

This is by far the best performance of this beautiful piece I've found. It was also the first I heard, and my first exposure to Giltburg's fantastic playing! I'm not generally a massive Rachmaninoff fan, but this is a condensing of everything I like in his music into a compact and absolutely exquisite composition. Just got my copy of the music yesterday and boy, it's deceptively difficult to even stumble my way through! Many thanks for sharing this.

5:52 - I generally love Mendelssohn but much of this piece has this aimless ‘virtuosity’ of 32nd note arpeggios and broken triads that remind me of a gr 8 conservatory exam. I’m hoping Felix himself - the prodigious genius that he was - was able to wince slightly over this thematically weak piece - as much as he may have swelled with pride over his Em violin concerto. All praise to the performer - less to the performed.
