Spellbinding composition, quintessentially Russian in spirit and sound - a favorite among Rach's Etudes. I wouldn't have pegged it as especially fiery, if this had my been my first D Minor Etude recording. Giltburg's version is great, but feels more like Cossack storytelling around the hearth than a raging bonfire on the steppes. With his dramatic rubatos and accents, Lugansky plays it with an overarching narrative, plus a recurring sense of vodka-fueled, boot-stomping bravado that leaves you breathless. Good to be able to compare.
