Top 5 Custom Knives...what are yours?
Shoutout to all the custom scale makers. We need scales for these lightweight models of the chief.
Very nice. A stunner.
beautiful piece! Hope they someday bring the production AD20 Compact to the dealers 🤞
@Sean-rl5rg Thanks! Yes, that would be excellent if they do!
… oil…
Your gonna return a knife because it had a bit if oil on the blade? LOL If your that picky I wouldn't buy any knife if i were you.
I’m pretty sure this is gonna be my next knife. Talked to a guy on Reddit who makes micarta inserts. Not huge on the carbon fiber but I love the knife shape so the CF will be fine lol
Good knife review, sir. Thanks for the update.
@@leovillanueva3642 Thanks! I appreciate you!
I agree.
I like the serrated blade on your native chief. I recently bought a different brand knife with a full serrated blade and its working great for me.
If I have to bare down that hard I’m getting a saw. 😅
As long as I can take it apart, I really don’t have a preference. That’s just me 👍🏻Or a sharper blade
My biggest worry about making a Maxix/XL my goto folder is cold. That’s a a lot of plastic for n very crucial roles. I’ve watched the plastic al pot apart in cold weather just being bumped into by a poofer jacket. Hard use knives really need to be immune to earth temps.. or to nerve wracking. Oh and the one Spyderco I tried to disassemble the screws striped out and two didn’t go back in right. Last time I did that.
@@Errcyco You make some valid points! Thank you!
This knife is going to shred any organic matter that gets in its way.
I guess I'll just be using this for kitchen prep
The most likely issue is the ball cage is slightly out of spec and too large. The ball can rattle around.
I've got this exact one on pre-order. Been waiting months. I think point of lock back for this model is ease with gloves maybe, idk.
@@fredkadanejr-fv2te You could be right as it's easy to spydie flick
I hated back locks my entire life until I picked up a Native 5 LW. Seki back locks aren't nearly as smooth or solid feeling as the Golden back locks. Liked it so much I ordered the fluted CF Native 5 which is such a solid lock and just yesterday ordered my first Native Cheif, the plain edge Magnacut. Hoping it's just as solid.
@@cvdubya5774 Agreed! I believe you'll enjoy this one!
The less talked about, but sometimes very important point about the manix, something it has over most of the other spyderco knives? It’s actually a nice looking knife Without a massive hump to accommodate that thumb hole, it looks like a normal knife, and doesn’t take up 2 acres of space in your pocket while doing it
Greetings friend! Does this leg work with washers or the same as the Native 5 without washers? Thanks bro.
@НіжнийВуж From what I can see after examining it with a flashlight, I believe it runs without washers.
@@dk210913 Thanks
It’s called lock stick. Sounds extremely minor. Rex 45 lw manix did the same for me. Awt scales, a ceramic ball and aluminum ball cage later and it’s smooth as butter. It should work itself out after a while if you don’t wanna mod it.
mine doesn't click when I unlock it
Yeah…they are custom knife makers… Not custom knife sharpeners.
Maybe ask a custom knife maker
Maybe they leave it up to the customers to put their own edge on them. 🤷♂️
Good video good topic 👍👍
I agree... best EDC pen by far! I lost my mini titanium about 5 months ago and have been on the hunt since. I will find another one eventually! haha
@@jonbeary I hope you do find one or even more than one!! 😎
Actually looked on their website and they made 99 different steels
Is magnacut difficult to sharpen?
@nickm212650 Haven't tried to do so. Although I've heard numerous reports from people, including some I know, who say it's actually not that difficult to sharpen at all.
If looking for cpm15v just get some Spyderco s90v. Just a little less edge retention and stainless.
You can get a Manix 2 lw in Rex45 for $129. At GP Knives. MagnaCut at 61-62 hrc is gonna retain strength. Just saying 👍🏻 Maxamet or Rex121 if you want 68-70+ hrc and won’t be tough at all.
Pretty much like America lately. Not so nice to the citizens.
The teeth sucking is crazy bro. Sorry too be that guy. Never had a problem with any Manix 2 I’ve had. I probably have 20 Manix 2’s and not one sticks 🤔eh,no biggie. Tools make noise 🤷♂️Take it easy bud.
I believe there are more than 27 steels. I have 27 different Spyderco steels and I know there are a bunch other steels.👍🏻
Have Native Chiefs in s30v,xhp s90v and MagnaCut. Awesome model. 👍🏻
Grabbed 2 of these. Love the Chief. And Native 5 models. Have a couple Native 5 lw serrated edge and they are fantastic. Enjoy 🎉
Greetings friend! Does this leg work with washers or the same as the Native 5 without washers? Thanks bro.
@@НіжнийВуж Thats a good question. Haven’t taken it apart yet,but I’ll try and keep this open so when I rit dye it I’ll get back too ya 👍🏻
@@DuhYaThink If you don't forget, write a response. Thank you.
I got the black one. That and the black native 5 are users because cruwear is great.
Which is your favorite? The compact whaleshark there is the strongest on the table, congrats getting that. The full-size whaleshark is the one I carry. While people cry "fixed blade" they fail to realize that these knives are designed to work hard. They aren't for batoning but they aren't delicate folders.
@@deadvikingtrolls Honestly, I'm not really sure. That would take more time to contemplate lol
You know my opinions on the manix 2. I'll reiterate that the downward angle it cuts at is fantastic and the best thing it has going for it. Let's you follow through a slice however far. As for lightweight vs g10, you're talking blade heavy vs handle heavy. Blade heavy (the lightweights) is easier to control through materials. Handle heavy (the g10) is more comfortable for longer periods. I'm personally team g10 but mostly for the feel, quality and action. Not all lightweight spyderco's include a second washer. I carry two knives almost every day, more because I love them. The ad20 whaleshark stays on me even at home. The native 5, combat troodon and a wilmont persian fighter compete for the other pocket.
I'm a contruction worker. Wharncliffe is good for cutting long straight lines, has limitations due to having no belly or curvature at all. It'll cut strings off your clothes, open packages, whatever but cut something on a flat surface and you have to delicately chop. People say it's good for self-defense but stab > slash. DE dagger wins. It isn't a bad blade shape really, it's nice how the tip stays in what you're cutting. That's why razors are effective, just limited as a blade meant to cut nothing but lines in drywall or something. At least it has the usable tip unlike some sheepsfoots. Favorite wharncliffe in my collection is probably dead reckon's ridgeback wharncleaver, magnacut/titanium. Strong knife down to the lock, retired it with a working edge tip and the rest sharp because really the tip is most of what you have. Drop point for life.
A good drop point is the best and most versatile edc knife blade, just depends how much belly you want as to which blade. Could go with spyderco's leaf shape for a straighter blade or a protech mordax for more belly near the tip. As long as your blade edge is curved slightly it should be viable for any task.
The clicking sound was probably the machining of the ball cage. I dealt with that on my titanium manix 2 when I put flytanium cages in my two. It can happen even from them, eventually smoothed out. It's a shame because I think it's a necessity to do this on a manix 2, the plastic ball cage feels cheap. Haven't broken the factory cage myself but I've seen two others that broke. This is actually one of the strongest locks on the market once upgraded to aluminum or titanium, still awkward to actuate though.
It's easy to hate on benchmade these days but I do. Still the adamas line comes in magnacut or cruwear in the 63-65 hrc range, optimal for both steels. Mini adamas I think was my favorite benchmade before I gave it to someone but the design was never my favorite. I want a forward choil on my work knife and no axis lock on my business knife. Didn't mind the holes though. 940 is good, obviously. Received one from the warehouse with an uncentered blade, gritty action and soft, flaky s90v. Received a second from off the custom shop for $400 with a perfect fit and finish, no problems. Good to keep in mind when buying benchmade. Loved the classic if slightly archaic design but s90v wasn't handling my abuse well at all. Sold one, gave one to my mom. I'm being spiteful but I'd say the best benchmade knife is the hogue ritter. Still not a fan of omega springs (never had one break, it's just weak logistically) but I've bought two of these. Green and purple g-mascus and magnacut, excellent fit and finish. The feel of the g10 is great. These were given away too but I can recommend them if you don't want to choke up. Personally think it's boring but I recognize it as a great and comfortable cutting tool. I didn't buy a bugout. It was too obviously cheaply manufactured plastic trash that could be folded in half the unintended way. So strange that knife created today's meta. But yeah. Nothing else nice to say.
I tried hard with the manix 2. Built a titanium one with $700 of pieces I bought. Native 5 is the best spyderco knife and I can explain why. It has their best ergonomics scaled perfectly between the lil native and shaman meaning no confining thumb ramp. Your thumb will go where you need it. The back lock is stronger and ages better, particularly more so than the compression lock, and the lock is perfectly suited for the massive finger choil. Fingerless locks are redundant here where the ball bearing lock is awkward to actuate. Lastly the native 5 is one of their best looking knives and the scales of the manix 2 look like they could have been pooped out. Manix 2's biggest strengths are the choked up position and cutting lines. Native 5 does the former better due to having no thumb ramp but the downward angle of the blade is at least exclusive to the manix 2. Sounds harsh. Manix 2 is a good knife overall. Native 5 is their most masterful design.
@deadvikingtrolls I certainly respect your in-depth liking and opinion for the Native 5. Though I may disagree as to which one is better, it certainly is an excellent piece. The lock back is very solid. The lines are very attractive too. I personally wish the Native 5 had a compression lock, but I know a lot of fans would dislike that.
@@dk210913 I stand by it. Native 5 was my first spyderco and I couldn't beat it. Also have an ad20, that I would say is the higest end folding knife on earth but you know with the bladestock that is a whole different kind of knife. Agree with you on the ergonomics, it's like an apocalyptic manix 2 with a better lock. It doesn't cut as cleanly but at this level you are aware you're trading thin blades for strong ones. Depends what the enthusiast in you wants. Ultimately it was the lock that made me put away the manix 2's. I thought it was an improvement on the axis lock but you need two fingers and to fight the curved backside of the knife to close it one handed.
Are you selling any of these pens?
@lucasczech1637 Unfortunately, no. Sorry. There may be a vendor or two out there that might still be selling them. Chicago Knife Works, Knife Country are a couple that come to mind.
If it really bothers you can try putting in a ceramic ball and see if that quiets it up.
@chrishynes6091 I appreciate the suggestion. It was the one which I returned that had the real issue, as I mentioned. But this one is much better.
My LW version makes that sound too, my Crucarta don't. It don't bother me. It may go away after a year or two.
why would you want a fully serrated blade made out of magnacut? ppl are so dumb its ridiculous. you could sell a guy a disposable razer plated in gold if you had enough youtubers calling it cool
@DeathmetalPersian Keep your opinions to yourself. Go harass someone else since you have nothing to do other than complain about things you don't understand.
@dk210913 harass? an opinion you dont like isnt harassment. You sound like a commie. The concept of a fully serrated blade is stupid on its own for anything outside of cutting seatbelts and bands or sawing through thin wood. All of which are rough applications that dull an edge quickly, so why you would want a "tool" serration blade made out of something hard to sharpen is moronic. You youtubers are just buying magna cut like a woman wears jewelry. Serves no actual functional benefit on a tool outside of bragging about how much you paid for it.
@dk210913 in fact if you go over to spydercos own warranty page you will see they refer to their blades as "tools meant to be used until discarded" and they dont replace blades under wear and tear. they are designed to be retired and replaced.
I also don't get why knife makers ruin perfectly good tool with this serrated BS. If you want to put serrations in the blade at least leave portion of the blade from root to be straight edge. So far only German/Finnish knife makers have figured this out and the blades are far and few between.
@@ex1tium It makes even less sense to make a blade you need to sharpen often out of magnacut
Brand new and incredibly easy to open/close, howd you do it?
@@bobTom37 Spydie flick 😎
what are complaining when you disengage it or when it closes jsut give it some time
I don't hear anything out of the ordinary, all manix 2 versions make a clicking when the lock ball engages and disengages on and off the blade, not sure if that's what you are hearing or not though, would have to hear it and i could not hear anything in the video
@phdcinnabar5754 The one I returned under warranty was the bad one. I wish I had it just to show you guys for the sound it made. It was horrendous.
@@dk210913 I see, it wasn't this one in the video, gotcha, I understand through, I have three spydeco knives with lock stick, I hate carrying them
