24 - HW97K Review: The Ultimate HFT Springer on a Budget! 🎯
One of the fox shooters done a review on these he said they where shit and I can well believe it mate
I’ve been using them since the 80s, first was a Weaver first, then on to Simmons and Burris and more recently Leupold, Vortex, Zeiss and Arken. You’ve been missing out!
Yes, looks like I have, but not any longer! 😀👍
This gun performs best at 200bar, the REG is of a basic design and does not like full pressure, treated correctly these will match any PCP on the market below £1k.
Yes, definitely a good performing bullpup. 🙂👍
Ha! It turns out I've been using an almost "LPVO" scope for decades! My faithful old Tasco 615W is a 1.75 to 5 x 40, bought in 1981 and still going strong! Of course, back then it was just called a "scope"!
Well only 0.75x away from being a full LPVO and being from the 80s no wonder it's still going strong. Modern stuff just doesn't seem to hold up so well in the long run does it. all the best. 😀👍
how much
I just used the link in the description to check and it's currently 154.99 USD, so with the discount that's 139.49 USD. 🙂👍
Jeff, do you think it will work in UK HFT? You might give it a try?
Starts wikth "definitions" - so what the heck is "HFT"???????
My apologies. HFT is nothing to do with ballistics which is why I didn't include it. HFT stands for Hunter Field Target. It's a shooting sport where competitors shoot at metal targets that fall over when a 'kill zone' is hit. Targets are usually set out in woodland at different ranges and the kill zones are different sizes. Hope that helps? 🙂👍
This was *super* useful. I am a total newb, so I had no idea what to do other than that I needed to move compressed air from one place to another lol! I have the same compressor as you and, even though I am in the US, I ordered the NRV from Best in UK, because it was actually less expensive than the same thing here, even after shipping (small enough that shipping wasn't too bad).
Glad it helped! 🙂👍
I use a LPVO scope on my EDGUN R3M in 25 caliber and love it over any scope I ever used on it.
Bet it looks good too! 😀👍
@hftshooter yea it's the DELTA STRIKER HD 1/6/24 and the glass is crystal clear, it wasn't cheap it cost 850 dollars but to me it's worth it. Brian at EDGUNWEST sells them. He carries excellent scopes, I also have a DELTA OPTICS JAVELIN 5/30/56 for long range from him also but it's a big heavy scope 34mm scope tube that's why I put the LPVO back on it's great out to a hundred yards for hunting.
A good scope makes all the difference. Sounds like you have some great kit. All the best with it. 🙂👍
Thanks for the video Jeff. Every day we learn something. Keep the videos coming 🙂
Thanks, will do! 🙂👍
Hi Jeff, great review of the LPVO Scope, like every one else, we are like WTF is an LPVO Scope 🤣🤣🤣it's not a bad piece of kit, looks great on your Ghost 👍👍 also you kept me up late again 🤣🤣lol.. Hope you have a great weekend 👍✌️👌
Hi Johnny, I just don't seem to be able to make short videos. 😅 You have a good one too! 👍
Lol Jeff😂😂 don't worry about the length of your videos, I think all the other guys on your page would say the same 👍👍👍 it's like watching your favourite TV show when your videos pop up, so you kind of need to watch it no matter how long it is.. Its better than the shit that's on the telly and I'm sure the other guys would agree👍👍👍❤️ Im always up really late at night anyway, so it's my fault for watching it so late.. 😂😂 So never worry about it Jeff👍👍👍 I got a few goodies today, a Kral Puncher Jumbo Hi Cap and a Vector Optics Sentinel 8-32×50 Scope.. I've only shot one 14 round magazine through it to zero it in , and it blew me away its incredibly accurate, the Kral comes with a spare bottle so you can just change the bottle over, it's a surprisingly cool bit of kit, it would make a great ratting rifle😂😂 im gonna give it a whirl tomorrow for a few hours.. Anyway I'm a happy bunny,.. The simple things make me happy.. ❤️ Enjoy the rest of the weekend Jeff.. 👍👌✌️
Those Turkish rifles are really coming on. I had the chance to shoot a kral np02 a while back. Great little rifle for the money. Enjoy the new kit. 😀👍
Thanks Jeff, Yeh it looks like a cheaper version of an FX Panthera Hunter.. I Think Kral copied the design 🤣🤣lol.. But at a third of the price so it was a no brainer and as much as I could afford.. I haven't been working for over a year now so I need to watch the pennies 😂😂lol.. I was really wanting a Brocock but that was way over budget..I Was looking at the Brocock Compatto Sniper XR.. I did fancy that but out of my league at the moment🤣🤣 anyway, Happy Sunday Jeff, enjoy your day ✌️👍👌
Hi jeff ,lots to think about, and just showed how much is out there for shooting not just airguns ,keep up the great vids😊😊
Yes, plenty of different stuff to check out! 😀👍
You can also put the putty on the outside and carpet in the inside. If you covered a bell with that putty it wouldn't ring very loud.
Yes, that would work, but pretty messy! 😁👍
Hello from New Zealand, awesome reviews. Keep up it up.
Thanks, will do! 😀👍
Morning Jeff, hope you're well? Another cracking video, mate. All the best
All good here thanks, glad you enjoyed it. 😀👍
Some great ideas here, for a new shooter. I won’t be so quick to chuck my Amazon boxes away in future. Thanks.
Thanks, I use mostly Hello Fresh boxes. 😀👍
Do you thing a heavier pellet would help to not be as effected by the wind?
Technically, the greater mass should ensure it's not deflected so much. I have plans to test wind deflection of different pellets, but I need the right windy day to do it. 🙂👍
Sorry to bother again ! I'm zeroing off a bipod prone for hunting. I have achieved pellet on pellet accuracy at 25 yards for 10 shots but whenever I get the gun back out it needs adjusting again. Tends to take me 5 magazines to get it consistent. Have you any idea how to sort this out? But embarrassing as I have been shooting 10 years !
It sounds like something is getting knocked and moving, or it could be a scope fault. Check your scope rings are properly torqued. If everything's tight and it still happens, try a different scope if you can.
@@hftshooter thank you so much my friend, I will try a different scope shall I let you know how I get on?
Good idea on your back stop. Like the clipbaord holder too. 👍
Thanks 👍
Great video Jeff. I'm pretty sure the 'bung' is similar to a neutral density filter. DJI drones often need a ND filter because DJI make the sensors so sensitive you need a ND filter to reduce the light evenly across the spectrum to gain control of exposure.
Yes, it's not just a hole. There is a lense of sorts in it that reflects colours when up to the light so you're probably right.
Nice demostration. The skirt has a thicker side and a thinner side. If the pellet was indexed into the chamber say heavy or light side up, would that affect poi?
I've seen another video on the topic where they tried that and it didn't seem to make a difference. I haven't tested it myself.
try acupell lubed should be just one hole . and easy to zero , 20 years plus experience
Thanks Alan. I never knew there where tinned lubed pellets. I'll have to give them a try. 🙂👍
Nice explaintion. Retired as a physical lab tech and loved it. It was never boring to me. I believe it was my concentration about detail and patterns. Thank you for turning my gears.😂
Thanks! 😀👍
Thank you for the informative tour and bring HFT to the public. Have had pellet rifles for awhile and never thought to join a shooting club.. At 74 now it sounds like a grear idea! Thanks again.
You're very welcome, glad you found it useful. 😀👍
Great video again ! Do I need to zero my airgun the same way I shoot (prone for example). If so how do people shooting hft shoot in all 3 positions? Cheers !
Zeroing is basically aligning your scope with the trajectory of your pellets. It's independent of your shooting position. With correct shooting technique your zero won't change with a different position. Hope that makes sense? 🙂👍
@@hftshooter it does mate very happy with that so zero in a solid position and that will be your zero at all positoks?
@@user-li5tw6uc7l yes, but watch your cheek weld on the cheekpiece and your eye alignment and make sure they're good in all positions. 👍
@@hftshooter thank you !
wobbly shooting bench
You're right, I noticed that too when I watched it back. Far too wobbly for benchrest, so I spent Sunday fitting some solid wooden legs to it. Coming soon in a future video! 😀👍

Interesting video as always thanks very much. I don’t do air rifle BR but have picked a few things up from YT. I think the H&N Baracuda FT 9.57 grn hand sorted are very popular for BR, can very often produce less energy than JSB but you need accuracy first. The QYS 8.48 streamline are also excellent imo. You must try both head sizes with both those pellets. As always a good batch of the JSB are pretty much impossible to beat but it’s finding the best batch. Also I think the BR shooters weigh and size pellets for competition. Would be interesting to see the sizing process and the results if you ever push it that far. Another thing I’ve found over the years is that the least junk you have on your barrel the better. You could do with the adjustable air stripper and tune it to your best pellets and then leave it be. Problem being it might be too noisy for your garden and create many range trips. Just a few thoughts. Thank you very much for doing these videos. I find them so interesting. Just add a bit more 😂. Not sure if you find the same thing but I’ve found that the AA 8.44 with the deep skirt pockets shoot very well with PCP and the ones with the shallow pockets shoot well with springers. Might be just my guns but that’s what I’ve noticed. Trouble is, you have no clue what you are going to get until you open the tin.
Some very useful advice there, thanks for sharing. I think I'm starting to realise that compared to HFT pellet selection is much more important in BR. Your air stripper advice tallies with what I've been told by others. Apparently the FTP900 barrel needs the weight of the stripper on it to maintain the good harmonics and keep it accurate. I'm going to be testing that. All the best. 🙂👍
Wulf Fireball, front end focus with a throw lever, throw lever on the zoom. RWS Hobby @25 yards .22 Airacuda max = a very neat, easy to measure 7.5mm hole (first 3 shots went through the same 5.5mm hole).
Well done! Thanks for sharing. 🙂👍
Hi great video Do you still have the left hand stock ? I did the same as you I bought a right hand one and I am left handed tut
Hi Neil, yes I do still have it and you're not the first to ask about it. I was thinking about converting it to a bench rest stock. It probably didn't show in the video, but the bottom of the grip where the palm rest goes has been cut off and the grip has been fettled a bit to allow for right handed shooting with a thumb up position so it's not really in good order to be used as a left-hand stock.
That looks like a beast Jeff, good luck taming it. Like you I found the Baracuda 8 pellets slower than the JSB even though they are stated as the same weight and head size and they also feel tighter when pushing into the breech. As another one of you viewes said the material is a little harder causing drag. Keep up the good work🙂
Thanks Peter, I'm looking forward to taming it some more. 😄👍
Great video Jeff, that's an awesome rifle, looks amazing, Im in love ❤️ and great shooting to, that section of the video really interested me as a new shooter, I'm doing it right 👍👍😂😂😂YAY.. like you said each different tin of pellets has a slightly different zero or quite a big difference.. Even though they're the same weight and head size, see I'm learning, 👀👀😂😂 well I've learned a hell of a lot from watching you, so I thank you for that and it's much appreciated.. Have a great weekend Jeff 👍👌✌️
Glad to be of service mate. You're right, it's a lovely rifle, I'm lucky to have it, I've just got to learn to shoot it better. 😄👍
H&N pellets are always slower because they are a harder lead alloy causing more drag in the barrel
Yes, I've definitely found that. 🙂👍
Hi I think you have a left hand adjustable cheek piece still fitted to your rifle ?
Well spotted. My new stock didn't come with one so it was transplanted from the left-hand stock. I actually prefer it the wrong way around. 🙂👍
so much for hft on a budget then
As I mentioned in the video this rifle will be for benchrest, and for what I paid for it that will be budget benchrest! 🙂👍
@@hftshooter Sorry. I was just joking. Lovely rifle
No problem mate. I will be returning to the budget springer at some point. I still need to shoot it in a competition. 🙂
what a stunning bit of kit mate . and to be fair i think with the stock and hamster back to original it looks very nice . was not keen on that ally hamster probably severed its purpose but the original one looks better in my opinion. shot a few of those down the club . between that and the ev2 both fantastic bits of kit
Cheers mate, yes very pleased with it! 😀👍
Your targets are too large. I draw a grid pattern and shoot for the intersections. I also sight in 2 hash marks lower in the scope reticle, so that I don’t shoot out my aiming points.
You're right, and I did say in the video that I usually shoot at smaller dots or my own printed targets with 5mm bulls. Check out some of my other videos and you'll see that's generally the case. 🙂👍
Hi do you still have the left hand stock ?
Is the new shroud quieter? It sure looks nice on the 900…
It's not as quiet as the 0db moderator that was on the rifle, but quiet enough for garden use. 👍
❤
Thanks! 😀👍
Hi, I think I saw you at the recent BRK day! Thanks for the good tip regarding scope height. Do you do this after you have zeroed the scope, or when the reticle is optically centred? Thanks.
Hi Malcolm, if you're doing the tin foil test then probably best to do it after you've zeroed your scope. 👍
Thanks!
Can you see the stars even better during clear night skies? thanks for the review
Sorry, I didn't think to try that so I have no idea.
Very educating. Thanks a lot for your great videos.
My pleasure! 🙂👍
Great video Jeff, and good honest review, it's a great piece of kit for the money, I kind of liked the idea of the screen, that's a bit different, like pointed out you'd have to get used to it, catch up with you on the next one, I hope you and your family are doing well 👍👌✌️
Hi Johnny, yes it was fun to play with. I guess I'd get used to the screen. A couple of minor improvements and it could be great! All the best. 👍
Excellent explanation, thanks.
Glad it was helpful! 🙂👍
Add a layer of plumbers putty on top for the wood backing.
Thanks for the tip. I tried that in a pellet catcher for a previous video. Works okay but it's messy and melts in the heat. The denim strips are working really well! 🙂👍
From my experimentation: I agree regard pellet weight. WRT head size - the head size shown on the JSB tins rarely correlate to the head size in the tin. Using a Pelletgage, I have found head sizes ranging from 4.49 to 4.55 within the same tin regardless of the size shown on the tin (the JSB Premium has far smaller spread). In my rifle, pellets with measured head size of 4.52 and 4.53 give the smallest groups, the further the head size deviates the bigger the group. I agree batch number does make a difference. The batch number with least deviation in head size and a head size that suits your gun will produce the smallest groups. Main brands better - not a safe claim, it depends on the variation in the tin. Skirts - not done that test. In your experiment did you use consistent heads size pellets - it might be the group size was affected more by the head size than skirt distortion.
Thanks for sharing. Perhaps I need to get a head sizer and test this myself. What head sizer do you use? As for the skirts, I didn't size the heads, but since the video many shooters have told me they've had the same results. 🙂👍
Hi mate, great video :) does it come with a bipod mounting point?
You would have to fit a sling stud or picatinny mount to the stock if you want to attach a bipod. 👍
@@hftshooter thank you ! How easy do you find it to load?
@@user-li5tw6uc7l it's okay when you get used to it.
@@hftshooter also I actually live in Cambridge near the hft site you go to, do you know of anyone selling any pcps there/ anywhere else I could search apart from gi trader and shops for second hand bits?
Temp gauge is because a bullet is affected by temperature
OK, but I've never seen anyone make ballistic adjustments in the field due to temperature. And to be honest, the gauge is so small you're not going to get an accurate reading from it.
Your story on the old school way of equalizing tanks without gauges is 😮 WOW, kind of scary. Glad that was before I became a recreational diver 20 years ago. Great video 😃
Interesting video to watch and set of results to look at. The reg pressure, hammer weight, travel and spring pressure are all interlinked to give the speed to the pellet. For sub 12 ft-lb, if you up the reg pressure you will have to compensate by reducing the hammer travel or spring pressure etc. It tends to be a long process of multiple adjustments. Sub12 airgun channel is fantastic, but you don't get to see the amount of testing they must do to get their results. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing. You're right, which is why I followed up by checking the power wheel which is I believe a hammer spring adjuster! 🙂👍
Thanks for detailed review What about screen resolutions and brightness I bought one so shiny that cant use it Tot visible from 50 m... What about this product?
The resolution is good and the 5 levels of screen brightness are not super bright. You need level 5 in bright daylight, but at night it works well on 1 and I didn't notice any glow when night filming, never spooked the rabbits anyway. 👍
