REFINING YOUR LEG AIDS: How To Improve Your Lower Leg Position
In this video, Thana and I will demonstrate how we can refine our leg aids by tuning into the vertical alignment of our limbs, the three basic lower leg positions, knee-closure, as well as toe and heel adjustments.
We will go over some of the less desirable habits many of us acquire over time, how to fix them and how to do some key stretches and warm-up exercises before you get started with your ride. You will see how to address your horse’s natural response system (‘buttons’) with more clarity and kindness and how to build an overall more harmonious communication system with your riding companion.
Watch and find answers to the following questions:

POSEIDON (2) Riding Reset: Exploring A More Relaxed Walk With A Horse That Jigs/Runs
Просмотров 65День назад
This is the second video installment of my work with Poseidon. This lovely six-year-old Lusitano gelding may, due to a condition called ‘side bone,’* occasionally present some mild irregularities in the gait and has a tendency to jig or run off into a jog/trot when asked to walk on the long rein. My impression was that it was more of a habit than an expression of mental or physical distress. He...

TRANSITIONS WITHIN THE GAIT: Beginning Transitions Between Medium And Collected Walk

Transitions within a horse's gait are created by maintaining a steady rhythm while beginning to encourage the horse to...
REFINING YOUR REIN AIDS: Train Yourself To Ride With More Synchronized Hands

Try this very effective method to train yourself to allow your horse to move in a mo...

    Interesting video! I think you are correct in your assessment that this beautiful horse seems to jog out of habit. We had a mare that constantly broke into a jog when we first brought her home, but she was very high strung. We spent about six months only walking her and helping her feel safe. She had been ridden harshly by a previous owner. She was much more skittish and reactive than this horse seems to be. She did eventually learn to walk in a relaxed manner. Thank you for posting this video! ❤

    Very hard riding school horses

    • @katjaelk
      @katjaelk Месяц назад

      Thank you for your comment! I agree, it's definitely harder to apply this concept of riding to horses that are being ridden in a school by multiple riders. But I would also say that this video may be a great opportunity to start a conversation with those who are riding/stewarding/training the school horses. Sadly, numb or shut-down school horses are common in many public riding facilities. The horses went 'inward' and started to tune out the riders' aids in order to cope with the stress of multiple, constantly varying riding cues. Once they enter this state of dullness/learned helplessness they are often labeled as lazy, bomb-proof and beginner-safe. Unfortunately, horses that have been conditioned to be dull or to tune out their riders then inadvertently teach the riders to be rougher and less refined in their riding aids, and so the cycle gets perpetuated. The only way to help the horses and the riders to change is to start talking about it. And maybe, hopefully, videos like this one can start a discussion and show some possible avenues for improvement.

Would you agree with this or is her movement normal?

      @katjaelk 5 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your kind comment and great question! Before starting my work with Sable she was vet-checked top to toe for any health issues and nothing came up in regards to her hind legs. That doesn't mean that there couldn't be something that hadn't been found yet but at the time of the video she was cleared for regular Dressage work. There are a number of reasons for this type of movement though and some horses are just moving like that due to their conformation. What an interesting exercise to do 👍, will introduce this in-hand first (above all the leg-yielding part around a circle on the ground), then try to translate it into saddle afterwards. I guess this is an excellent exercise to supple the horse & even collect it a bit (?). Anyway, love hearing about the "lightness of aids", is actually what I'm constantly striving for (an ongoing process I find 😉). Thanks for sharing ❤

      Thank you for your kind feedback, Elizabeth! Great idea to start with the leg-yielding on the ground before trying it under saddle. And you're so right, all of this is in service of creating a more balanced, supple horse and therefore a lighter feel for the rider as well. So nice to see that these things came across. Thank you again! :)

    Love the way you implement the idea of "everything's fine when we're together" to build trust & confidence in the horse. In my opinion, what is seemingly "unspectacular" builds the foundation for everything else - thanks as ever for sharing

      Exactly, thank you so much for acknowledging the unspectacular but tremendously rewarding journey one takes when building a solid foundation with a horse! :)

    I’m so happy for the kind and helpful training you offer. I now have my horse doing this quite well. Is this the same way to do it while trotting?

      Thank you so much for your kind comment, Connie! I'm so glad you and your horse are making good use of this exercise. And yes, in principle the same weight aids (sitting a bit more on your outside seat bone), leg aids (inside leg is predominately driving) and rein aids (inside leg against outside rein feel) work for this exercise in the trot. My next/upcoming video will show this in the context of trot-canter transitions which I think you'll find helpful. :)
