- In this video, Sable and I continue to work on the acceptance of the rider’s leg aids with more ease on straight lines, corners and circles. This time, I’m starting our session without lungeing her first and go into a longer walk-warm under saddle with her instead.
For those of you who haven’t watched any of the previous videos about Sable’s story, the term ‘hot-cold’ means that a horse will vacillate between shut-down, slow-resistant and tense, run-away types of behaviors.
The following questions will be addressed in this video:
1. What are some signs my horse might display that show me that she/he is highly sensitive rather than oppositional?
2. How can I change my horse’s negative anticipation and create a more positive outlook towards our work together?
3. How can my riding a regular rhythm (like a metronome) influence my horse’s willingness to move in a more willing manner with me?

California-based Dressage trainer, instructor, clinician and life coach, Katja Elk, provides gentle training solutions for riders and horses of all backgrounds.
“Being a kind rider and trainer, to me, means learning how to ride with reasonable expectations according to where we find ourselves and our horses on our developmental journey. It also means that we need to continue to refine our technical riding skills so we can support our horses with more finely tuned aids as we are moving more joyfully and more in sync with one another.”
Katja applies the concept of a friendly, trust-based, two-way communication system to riding Dressage, work-in-hand as well as groundwork such as halter-work, longeing/lungeing and longlining.
Additionally, Katja, a Martha Beck certified master life coach, works with people who are looking for relief from anxiety, depression and/or other challenges in their lives.

Sable is coming along ! Her back is coming up at the posting trot and she is starting to swing. I think she is sensitive too. She reminds me a lot of my mare . I do ground pole work and cavaletti work once or twice a week -plus trail ride on hills about 5 miles once or twice a week .
Thank you so much, Giovanna! So nice of you to acknowledge Sable's progress. Your mare is blessed to have you take care of her with such a varied training schedule. So much of working with these highly sensitive horses has to do with keeping them mentally and physically balanced.
She is really coming along and willing. It was so nice to see her enjoy her ride today.
Yes indeed! Thank you for noticing her progress! It’s a slow journey but so rewarding.
I can’t wait to reach this point in the reset training with my mare! This video is so inspiring. Thank you!
You're so welcome! You will get there. Your mare is fortunate to have you steward her so consciously.
