The rise in popularity of retro computing over recent years (and its future)
A panel discussion hosted by Mr Lurch on the apparent meteoric rise in popularity of all things Computer Retro over recent years. This happened at the Canberra Vintage Computer Exhibition 2024.
After we're introduced to the panelists, we hear how they got interested in retro computing. How people can get into the hobby today. The challenges around e-waste education (not scrapping the good stuff) and second hand stores. The panelists' first experiences with a computer. Concluding with what we think is the future of the hobby.

Fortnite Chapter 1 OG on a 1980s green screen monitor
Просмотров 39День назад
Fortnite has thrown-back to Chapter 1 Season 1. I've gone further back in time, playing on a small 1980s Apple IIc green screen CRT. I try out OG Builds and OG Zero Builds. Will my ability to game get worse or improve? The game's pallet is mostly green anyway. Got another game you want me to play in green? Or a retro/modern hardware/game pairing you want me to try? Please let me know in the com...

The Forgotten 1977 Japanese Microcomputer and ... the (Original) Japanese Trinity
Просмотров 1 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Pat Breen at the Canberra Vintage Computer Exhibition 2024. Many vintage computer enthusiasts are aware of the "1977 Trinity" with the release of home computers from Apple, Commodore and Tandy. Less well known is Japan's own entry into microcomputer market in 1977 and that the Japanese had their own "Trinity" at the dawn of the PC revolution. This talk will cover the rise of the Japanese semi...

Amiga 500 and Macintosh LC III Inspection and Power-on
‼️This reminds me of the “explosion” in baseball card collecting. The “explosion” in GI Joe collecting. The “explosion” in Coca Cola memorabilia. It was called “boomers” and when they died this crap piled up in every antique mall in America and was left to rot. I’m not kidding, all of that crap has been sitting in the same spot in some places for about a decade now and nobody wants it. You’re next.
To be honest. I am soooo happy I dont need to deal with the old shit stuff anymore. I dont know who conciders "Retro" in any way interesting. Like special electronics equipment from the old days is cool and interesting, but not computers. I am so happy I dont need to deal with diskettes anymore. Or old, slow and noisy HDs. There is nothing interesting about old computers at all. The only retro computers that I might concider interesting are the ones you couldnt afford back then and cannot afford now. Some specialized super computers or computers that were designed to do very specific tasks. They are interesting and cool. But the typical personal computers normal people could afford, are boring and useless. People always talk about retro but nobody in their right mind uses them in any really useful way. It is just all talk and nothing else. Its just an collectors item and nothing more than that.
You do you. I think the same about old cars, but I heard some people like them.
doom in night vision :)
😂
I guess this explains the prices of Commodore gear these days, and probably other similar-aged stuff.
Zarathrusta, Robocod, The Killing Game Show, Hired Guns, Pinball Dreams, Kid Chaos, Microprose Golf, Project X SE, and Hybris are all neat ones to check out on that machine.
Seeing SimFarm of all games stuttering like that is strangely nostalgic.
When is the next Canberra Vintage Computer Exhibition, btw? I now have a tonne of retro gear to show & swap these days... :P
Cool. I don’t have a date for it yet, but will share on the channel when I can.
Argh nice to see “games in green” back ❤
Love it bro 😂👍
Thanks 😀
A few of my favorites : Turrican II, Marble Madness, International Karate, Lotus III, Ghouls n ghosts, Indy 500, Pang, Silworm, Swiv, Stunt Car Racer. On a 500 I wouldn't consider an accellerator. On a 1200 where you run everything in WHDLoad, yes.
Cool, thanks for the game suggestions. Ah yeah a 1200 would be nice to have.
Hi, why not to try North & South?
I tried looking to see about buying one of these but all I could find is his website which did have a PDF for version 6 but that's about the only page that seemed to be functional so it looks like I need to keep looking.
Looks like the latest revision is the "1 Bit Dynamic RAM (DRAM) Tester for Retro Computers (4Kbit to 1Mbit)" sold by Analog-Kid on eBay. The new one has 3 sockets. (I've been using the Rev.6 manual for my Rev.3)
I upgraded my Amiga 500 with an ACA-500plus a year after I got it in 2019. I don't play many games on mine, it's more of a glorified typewriter and it runs Deluxe Paint IV at double speed. I'm still figuring out how I can use the creativity software and the resulting files with my modern computer in a modern context. It can be a fun experiment to try out what (from all the advertised possibilities promised in those 80s ads) one still can do with an Amiga.
for convenience an accelerator with ide connector is a good upgrade. An 030 with some extra memory is all you need and they are very compatible. I don't think you can hdd boot from stock 1.3 roms howerver so the rom chip needs upgrading unless the accelerator has a map rom feature. It's a good idea to map rom anyways since ram is faster than rom. Then you need an ide to CF adapter and a CF card, or a CF to SD adapter instead of CF card. The point of this is to run Workbench of the CF card, and use WHDload games launching them using a launcher such as igame or any of the other available. WHDload requires extra fast ram that you would get from the accelerator so it won't run on a stock a500. It's also a lot of fun tinkering and personalise Workbench to have the perfect gaming setup :)
Yeah would be fun having a tinker with Workbench. I've only ever seen it on others' computers. And the convenience of having the games on a CF/SD card. Thanks for the advice and the tip about the map ROM feature.
For compatibility I ended up ditching all my accelerators and keeping my Amiga 500 with 1mb chip ram 1.5mb slow ram and a Gotek drive, near to stock keeping the 1.3 rom, if I want anything more I use emulation with coffin or caffeine os.
Interesting, a bit of different upgrade route that would keep the machine closer to stock. How much of an improvement does that RAM configuration make? Sounds like being able to switch an accelerator on/off might be handy? (if possible)
@ Some games or demos need 1mb chip others need slow ram expansion, hence I use a 2mb boobip expansion to cover each scenario giving the extra .5 mb chip and 1.5mb other, I remember fitting a switch on my original Amiga 500 to swap the expansion memory between chip and slow which is an easier option.
Yes, get an accelerator that will let you use a CF or SD card as a hard drive. You can load that up with WHDLoad and have almost all the Amiga games ever put out at your fingertips. You don't need a 68060 accelerator to play games, a 68030 with 8 MB of fast ram will play nearly anything adequately. I went from an Atari 800 to a used Amiga 500. From there I got a 2000HD, 3000 desktop, two A4000 desktops with accelerators and finally an A4000T with an 060/PPC and Cybervision with a big monitor. It all started with the lowly 500 with 512k to play some games, but the bug had bitten hard. Started a BBS, did desktop publishing on the 3000, added more phone lines to the BBS and after having 20 phone lines and modems hanging off of an Amiga 4000/060 I ended up starting an ISP business. The Amiga 500 totally changed my life. I still have it. I need to see if I can get it running again.
Thanks for the advice, good to know. It'd be nice to have the games easy to load and running smoother. That's cool where owning an Amiga 500 lead you. How many of the Amigas do you still have and use?
I still have them all except for the 2000, but I also have another 500 and a 1200 that were given to me by a friend. The 1200 and a 4000 desktop work and have been outfitted with Compact Flash drives and the 4000 has a Gotek drive and a quad ROM switcher I built. The 3000 and 4000T are both in good condition and may work without doing much to them I think the two 500s are in decent shape, but need work and the other 4000's motherboard is in rough shape, but I have another original 4000 motherboard from 1993 kicking around here somewhere so that might have a new life at some point as well.

Have you tried using a different keyboard. Maybe the flashing has something to do with the keyboard 🤓
😎
Definitivamente, una belleza 🤩
I just got mine today, and I'm a bit disappointed, the image wasn't as sharp as what I was hoping for, I thought it'd look just as good as using traditional hdmi on a modern console but no. I use rgb scart for all my retro consoles, and I tried out my og xbox, while the image was alot cleaner, it was still blurry, didn't seem all too different to just using rgb scart normally on my hdtv. Maybe I'm missing something here, or a hidden setting, I hope so, because what a paid doesn't feel worth it right now.
Thanks for letting us know. Yeah it’s kind of limited by the video the console outputs. You do get some advantages with the OSSC, but I think the comparison varies with how good your TV was at upscaling and zero lag…. RetroRGB has some good videos on the OSSC (and others) where he goes deeper into the functions and which device is best for what use case.

This cab is full metal?
They're mostly fibreglass, but have some metal inside it.
Pretty cool. The X68000 fascinates me. I have a couple Amigas and some day would like to get a X68000 machine.
Awww... I used a teletype to get psychoanalyzed by Eliza and a Decwriter to explore ADVENT's colossal cave. It's great to see people still appreciate what those tiny systems were capable of.
I'm not a fan of vinyl records.
Interesting information. I will look up how to make a dim light!
Last sentence in the whole vid state Canberra Computer Festival 2004.... but it was 2024.
Yes, oh no! Thanks, I'll have to make sure I don't copy paste that voice-over again 😳
Great talk very knowledgeable
Yes, Jeremy did a great talk
I planned to go but was in Tuggeranong when I remembered it was on. I own a few of those represented including some of the Atari and Commodore 8 and 16-bit computers. Have used multiple including BBC-B, ZX-81, Microbee, TRS-80 & CoCo. Last time I was inside Radford was mid-late 1980s at a show where a Microbee Gamma was present but not in working order.
2004 or 2024?
2024! :)
Yep 2024 😅 😳
Eliza is a program with which I've had conversations for.
I would start with a full recap of the main, bottom and video boards. ❤X68K
Thanks. Hopefully that does the trick
ok that keyboard is neat
It is a pretty cool keyboard hey. The X68k mouse is also cool, and we don’t have one. But if I had to choose between the 2, keyboard would win. Especially after I saw what it does in Cotton
Very cool I’ll need to try this
where did u buy urs?
I bought it from Video Game Perfection

Great to see another successful vintage computer expo. Thanks for sharing! -Cheers, Steve
what was that pc in the 80s that Ted's Camera stores were trying to sell as "better" than C-64 and had 50 big company names behind it..and was total flop? companies included JVC and Sony.
I don’t know. Maybe it was an MSX?
@@Kman_aus : that's the one, thanks
Didnt really take off here at all, but extremely popular in Japan - for Japan it was the PC standard before the IBM PC becoming dominant in the early/mid 90's. And it was responsible for killing off a lot of the less popular 8 bit designs in Japan (i.e. as a broad brush statement if you werent one of the big players - eg. NEC, Sharp and Fuj - you eventually folded and switched to an MSX design by the mid-80's). MSX did have some minor success in Europe, and also in Brazil, but the standard was largely invisible in Australia / England / US. Its actually a pretty capable platform with a lot of software (particularly on MSX2) still worth looking at today.
Great talk from start to finish. I really learned somethings.
Thanks - it was a 1 hour talk that ended up being compressed into 30 mins - I was impressed that it came out so coherently, as there was a little bit of panic in my head of trying to get as much of the preso out as I could while still making the story understandable :)
Thanks for this seminar Pat. Good work compressing it down that much. Came out well and I enjoyed watching it.
Great content! Keep it up. Subbed
Thanks!
I still have my Hitachi Peach.
We should talk! I know a small number of Peach folks. Really difficult platform to get software for, but i have a few leads :)
That was my dream computer when I was about 11 or 12 (-:
Good place to spend the day 👍
Such a good day 💯
Fantastic work, thanks.
Darn, would have liked to come, never knew it was on.
Hopefully you’ll be able to get to next year’s
How did I not know about this?
You youngins with your flashy PC gaming desk setups...this stuff right here is what started it off.

How fricking awesome. 😁
