Switching to the Thypoch Simera 35mm f1.4 for my everyday Leica M lens

Taking a look at my new go-to 35mm lens for Leica m mount. The Thypoch Simera 35mm f1.4 for m-mount offers incredible value and versatility with its impressive image quality, focal length, and fast aperture. Any thoughts between Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and Tamron 17-70 f2.8? Which is best for a6700?

      The Tamron has stabilization in lens which might be unnecessary do to the A6700 having IBIS. If I had an A6700, I’d get the Sigma. I have the Tamron on the A6400. I like it a lot but if I had the A6700, I’d get the Sigma. Both great lenses tho. Can’t go wrong.

    • @ft.rishikant
      @ft.rishikant 4 дня назад

      @@Barry-Sweaty But would you want to lose 20mm on the telephoto end?? Also, IBIS isn't best and VC of lens might benefit to have more stable footage. I'm getting both at more-or-less same price.

    • @boywithacamera
      @boywithacamera 4 дня назад

      Haven't had firsthand experience with the 17-70 so can't really comment on it. I ultimately went with the Sigma because I wanted something more compact. If I were using the 6700 for more gig-work, I'd probably go for the Tamron because of that extra reach. If I were doing more gimbal work, probably the Sigma since that would balance better (at least theoretically). Pretty sure there's no wrong answer here though so hope you enjoy whichever one you end up buying. :)

    this is exactly what i've been looking for, thank you!!! just one question - say when i'm travelling and want to just bring an ipad (and an external drive) but not my mbp, how would you go about using it to import the photos directly there and then sync to LrC when i get home?

    • @boywithacamera
      @boywithacamera 7 дней назад

      Hey there! I think Roman Fox has a few workflow videos and syncs everything through Lightroom, so there might be some tips there. Not sure how it would work with Classic, but I'm assuming that it would be the same as my process but in reverse? My guess would be to make your album(s) in Lightroom Classic first, make sure it syncs up to Lightroom on iPad, then import into that album when you're travelling. Curious to see how it works out so please let me know if you try it. :)

    So if I'm buying a gift lens for someone who wants to film RUclips content/VLOGs on the x-t4 and also might want more wide angle lenses, what would you suggest? The adaptor and the Cannon EFS 10-18mm? She already has a xf 18-55mm lens.

    • @boywithacamera
      @boywithacamera 15 дней назад

      Adapting to a Canon lens would be my last choice. Looks like lots of good options for wide angles are out now though I haven't used them. I'd probably start researching these two: Sigma 10-18mm for X-Mount Tamron 11-20mm for X-Mount

    I have a a6700 and have just started filming stuff in 10bit 4:2:2 in XAVC HS (I read somewhere that this was the best one to use).. But I load my footage into Premiere Pro and it is super slow to decode.. almost unworkable. My PC is a AMD Ryzen 3950x and 2070 Super GPU

      Interesting, I had a similar PC setup and don't remember H.265 from the A7SIII to be unworkable unless it was a higher frame rate like 60 or 120. Moving from Premiere to DaVinci Resolve helped smooth things out a bit on PC, but ultimately changing to the Apple M1 chips was what made H.265 a non-issue for me.

      @davidlogan3874 Месяц назад

      @@boywithacameraI think the 50mm is what I’d go for. Focusing is definitely a challenge with the m240. I just got one last week (my first rangefinder)…different way of thinking about composure(which is why I like it) for me it seems I need to think about the focus tab position before I even put it to my eye…the more I practice this the easier it becomes with muscle memory…hoping it will just be automatic some day. This may sound dumb…but try walking around the house guessing the focus tab position/learning to visualize distances…definitely harder when the shot matters in the real world.

      I would say it's comparable as it has 10-bit and you have the options of the All-I codec or external raw recording via an Atomos recorder. The lowlight is extremely impressive, I would say comparable to the FX3 to be honest. I shot in Long-Gop a lot and noticed some moire/aliasing though, so if you want to keep file sizes down, I think you would fare better with the FX3. Hope that helps. :)

    LONG time Fuji user and early adopter here. Love my XT5 and curious about the Nikon, but considering a leap to Sony (A6700). I’ve been shooting since the 90’s. Shot lots of film back in the day. I’ve shot every camera system from Canon to Nikon, Fuji, Olympus and beyond. Never tried Sony (other than my little ZV1 which is awesome). Curious about an A6700 or something really small and ergonomic. I do wear glasses so I need an EVF. Love mirrorless. I shoot headshots and I make a living at it. Currently shooting XT5’s but the autofocus is broken. If they don’t fix by new year I’m done. What camera system would you choose for full time portraiture? I have a weak back and shoulder and I’m 53 so I’m looking to go as light, ergonomic and fast as possible. Lighter the better. I shoot 75% natural light & 25% in a studio. Occasionally I shoot a family session, usually entirely with my X100V’s. I’m looking to change it up, but stay light and fast. I don’t need a tank I need a feather. I would love your thoughts!

    • @boywithacamera
      @boywithacamera Месяц назад

      Light as possible with good autofocus, the Sony A7C series (for better ISO performance in natural light) or the a6700 would be my guess! X100V's for family sessions sounds like a treat--if you're making those work I'm sure you'll get along fine with one of the smaller Sony bodies. One thing to note is that I'm not sure how well Sony plays with Godox flashes--some friends have zero issues, I had a few, so not sure if that will impact your autofocus experience if you're using Godox. Where the compact Sony cameras fall short is the EVF unfortunately so you may need to weigh its importance to you! Fuji's hard to beat here in the well-rounded experience for photography and weight. I am curious about your problems with the autofocus given that your main usage is portraiture. Is it an issue with eye tracking? If you're able to compromise a bit on the weight, you may find the Nikon ZF or Z6iii to be good options, but I don't have much experience with them. The Sony A7 series might actually be your best bet as they'll offer a better EVF experience than the compact bodies, but have the same autofocus capabilities and remaining relatively lightweight. The Canon R6ii is an extremely solid contender as well, though you'll need to be careful with what lenses you pick up as those can get quite hefty. The R6ii autofocus is great, EVF solid from what I recall, and the body is on the lighter side for full-frame cameras. An extreme route could be to forego autofocus altogether and go the manual focus route, but with a rangefinder. I actually found myself hitting more shots with my rangefinder camera vs. the autofocus on the Nikon Z8 (albeit still adjusting to this camera) when covering an event recently so it is definitely something that can be learned. Hope that gives you some useful information or ideas! Happy to connect further too if you want to hit me on instagram: @joonrho

  • @boywithacamera
    @boywithacamera Месяц назад

    Didn’t really get around to recording my thoughts after the walk, so leaving some here: 1. The Thypoch Simera 35mm f1.4 is a beautiful thing. Build quality is fine-does not feel too substantial, but that makes for a lightweight and easy-to-carry experience. Did not notice it being any less convenient than the Voigtlander Ultron 35mm f2 when it’s out of a camera bag. Extra size of course means you can’t slip it into a smaller bag as easily compared to the Voigt. 2. I don’t see myself falling in love with the focus tab for a few reasons, the main one being the infinity lock. Just don’t need it with the way I like to shoot. The focus nib is perfectly fine, I can get used to it, but the lock is an inconvenience for me. Much much prefer the Voigt. When it comes to video, however, I prefer the Thypoch. I’ve been adapting it to Nikon Z and enjoying it, but again, that infinity lock is incredibly annoying. 3. Aperture ring is hardly different between clicked and de-clicked. Just feels confusing to switch between the two with no discernible difference in experience; easily mis-toggled. Otherwise, the ring itself is fine. Just need to get a bit more used to it since I’m so used to using the Voigtlander. 4. Images seem to run a bit warmer and greener than the Voigtlander. I am almost inclined to say that it renders a tad more “vintage” than the Voigtlander, though they are very similar. Can’t really confirm until I shoot some proper side-by-sides, but that’s the impression I got. 5. My Voigtlander images with the built-in Lightroom profile always have too much vignetting for my taste, so find myself needed to increase that. Simera has no profile so I probably messed up the distortion correction. 6. Did not notice much chromatic aberration in the Thypoch images-noticed it in a few Voigtlander images. 7. Having a very difficult time choosing between the two lenses, mainly because f1.4 is f1.4. It’s nice to have that option when I want to use it. Otherwise, I think I would lean towards the Voigt as it’s more compact and has the nicer focus tab. 8. Sorry for the crap audio. Planning to use a lav next time. 9. Sorry for the POV video getting hidden under my vest. Gotta figure out a better way to use it. Curious to hear your thoughts if you’ve used both lenses, or just things you got from this video.

    Good to see you pop up on my feed again and perfect timing - my freelance journey has been getting me down recently and I’ve entertained getting a 9-5. A couple of thoughts: - I don’t think passion and work is always healthy. I started freelancing for passion and reached my ‘peak income’ in 2021 (the income I want to get to before tax rates go up and I’d have to start expanding), and now every year I work so hard to maintain that peak income, not for the passion. - Feeling mundane in a 9-5 seems like a symptom of being a creative person and having our creativity limited too much by external sources. Whether that’s creativity in your life with evening/weekend activities or creativity within video/photo projects. - You’ve done the right thing in experiencing both to experiment. I think life is all about balance and different people have different balances. I’m starting to think that the perfect balance is a 9-5 for 3 days a week and having freelance work around that. That sounds like a healthy balance between creativity, stability and passion, but our world is not really built around a 3 day work week!

    🙉 this gave my head a nice spin at 3am. My thoughts: Sexy Joon I am sad that you are sad Your videos are not bad. They are very demure, very mindful. Mundane goes where he pleases When was the last time I felt "this is worth consuming"? Survivor mode Joon vs THRIVING mode Joon, who is sexier How practical is my passion? Is my math still mathing with me? Be healthy to you too <3

    Brooooo ….. love this man … I think we’ve had conversations about our relationship with social media before but the way you communicated it with its connection to emotions completely changed the way the idea of social media sits in my mind. I appreciate you being able to so beautifully show me a different perspective man 👊🏾👊🏾

    Hey thanks for sharing your experience. It’s very refreshing to hear you speaking about the things in life you are wrestling with instead of the copy paste productivity tips I see elsewhere. To finding your own thoughts I feel very similar where I am generally more reactive than proactive. For me I would put it as creativity for my job is reflex at this point, where as creativity for my hobby is novel hard work where I feel like my ability does not align with my ambition which creates a creative road block. Also I would ask how much time do you spend without tv or podcasts? I worry I let my brain listen to other conversations more than I make it work on its own, which leads to a lack of space for creative thinking.

      Thank you for the kind words and I’m glad you found it refreshing. I really like your distinction between proactive and reactive creativity in the contexts of work vs. hobby! That might account for a lot of the blocks I’ve been feeling. Jobs always seem to provide an endless stream of things to react to, don’t they? I’ll have to sit on this, thank you for sharing. I actually made a video similar to your last point-I believe it was called Let’s Quit RUclips or something along those lines. I was noticing something similar, where I was consuming at a far higher rate than my own creating. Nowadays, I feel that I’ve gotten past that point, but when I feel listless, I do catch myself turning the brain off and just consuming NBA games/content or Korean variety shows haha. That usually indicates to me that I need to switch something up.

    Great and amazing thoughts. I find we have a lot in common. Life has become mundane and I really need more ways to get some creative stimulation... unrelated but if I find myself in your area, I'd love to do a collab vid or something!

    Thank you for sharing. I have thoughts - but am struggling to summarise them in a youtube comment. I recognise in you a lot of what i have gone through myself. I don't have all the answers myself yet - but i have found new happiness in seeking change and serendipity (doing things just to see what happens). Maximising variability in life. Despite doing well in the career space, I am very disillusioned with the return I have enjoyed with financial success (relative to input). A very first world problem i admit. One I am working to fix myself. Heres to hoping we can one day get what we seek!

      Thank you for your time and I relate all too well to struggling to summarize thoughts into comments, texts, etc.! The idea of maximizing variability in life is intriguing; I believe I’ve tried that before, but it has been a while so I may need to revisit that idea and explore what application would look like today. It is humbling/grounding to recognize these are indeed first world problems so thank you for bringing that up. Does not discount these problems, of course, but a good thing to keep in mind. Let’s keep moving forward and please share any exciting updates you experience!

      Thank you for making this video, it did send me into a reflective mood and also a question about what I have done and should do with 'life'. I think it was a Kierkegaard quote "Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards"

    I wanted to create art I cared about and quickly learned that the means to fuel my art was not what I wanted. I turned it back into a hobby. I haven't given up I have just reevaluated why I actually pursued it in the first place. Also the instability and insecurity of the reliability of income is such a massive stressor.

    • @boywithacamera
      @boywithacamera 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for sharing. Yes, that’s very similar to my journey as well: video was always an expressive and communicative medium for me so my reevaluation led me in a different path. The stress of not knowing where income is coming from next is definitely a large factor for me as well.

    100% agree with a lot here. I did freelance video and photo work for 3 yrs and was never able to get it to a financially stable point. Had some things change in my personal life and had to pivot to stability - ended up lucking out big time landing a full time video position at an agency that's been a great experience so far - I fit in well with the team/culture and I do work that's fulfilling to me. Work used to consume my life in my freelance days but now I literally have friends telling me in person and over the phone that I look and sound like I'm doing a lot better which is v much true. Sure I may have lost a lot of flexibility to work on unpaid passion projects, but I can def say I live a much more balanced and healthier life with a much better outlook moving forward. I do still feel the need to work on personal passion projects here and there that I make time for occasionally, and it's been great to not have to worry about money/stability as much anymore and instead enjoy life with friends/family. Obvi this is just in this current life season so who knows things could change (I always thought a full time creative job would just feel draining). But for now this seems alright for me.

      Hey Jon, that is fantastic. I am glad to hear that you’ve found your full time creative job to be a stable and well balanced career rather than draining! It’s always a good sign when people around you say you look and sound like you are doing better. It’s great that you’re open to this being a current life season too; I personally feel that to be a much more stable approach to life, ironically. Always great to see a comment from you and I hope you continue to thrive and make time for passion projects when you have the time to do so.

    Irregardles of the time passed wisdom and perspective is gained. That perspective is valued by those yet to achieve. What you have to say has value. It has more than or is just as valuable as all the others that are out there. Share your perspective. It’s obviously valuable.

    Interesting to note that when you used to be in survival free lancer mode you looked into the walled garden of the 9 to 5 and craved the stability and predictable monotony and now that you feel somewhat shackled by the very elements that used to be attractive. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your pov as you've actually experienced both sides. I've always been on the 9 to 5 grind from the outside looking in, very much wondering how I'd fare trying to make a living from creative endeavours. I agree with the quantifying everything when you view everything in a practical lens, does sorta damper your outlook on life. It's a very utilitarian approach that seems to be absent perhaps when you're younger where you don't even look at every element in life in those terms. Where a proportionality analysis is not at the forefront before every task you undertake 😂 Always nice to hear what you gotta say, been following since I came across that IBIS comparison video.

    • @boywithacamera

      Yes, one thing I didn’t clearly mention was the irony that I’m beginning to feel one-dimensional in a very similar way to when I was in the freelance space. I appreciate your time and hope that my experience doesn’t dissuade you from exploring your creative endeavours in some sort of capacity at least! It is my personal experience and I do have friends who are doing well in that space. Yes, utilitarian approach is a great description and I agree that it seems to be largely absent during our younger years! Probably why we always refer to those years as simpler times haha. Proportionality analysis! I like the way you put that haha. The IBIS video was a fun one to make-I appreciate your support all this time!
