End of Season Rant!
This is the sanitized rant, produced for public consumption...
There was another rant, it was deemed unsuitable. I liked it better; it was unedited and more genuine.
This one plays more like an audio podcast after the first few minutes though there is a lot of previously unreleased footage to enjoy.

    The part where you showed the other "carving sports" to make a comparison between the position of the shoulders vs lower body in a turn was very helpful. I've always leaned into my turns "eurocarve" style, but as a mountain biker I know to lean my body away against the turns, not into the turn, for more traction. I don't know why I haven't connected the turning motions in different sports, but I'll be sure to be more cognizant this season!

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 8 дней назад

      Right? I always suggest learning to carve smoothly and consistently first, and then later push the limits of how far you can lean into the turn and drag your armpits. I see a lot of people getting real low to the snow but they're not carving anymore; it may look cool to the uninitiated but the carving part is what feels so good. (To me, at least.) The track will always reveal the truth.

      @cherrycarves the board that really got me addicted to the feeling of carving and letting the board draw its full glorious line from transition to transition is the Korua Dart I picked up for powder days. That thing is so fat that I've never experienced such deep turns. Its become my daily driver. Picked up a Freecarver 9000 for this season, hopefully the longer EE will allow me to get more power and rebound out of those up-unweighted turns!

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 8 дней назад

      @@Dav1dChui Yeah, I think you'll like the FC 9000 much better than the Korua. It's designed more for controlling speed by finishing the turns whereas the Koruas are for more surfy, open turn shapes, so you get more of that addictive carve feeling. Both of these carve decently for production boards and they're good choices. If you're interested in a high performance carving board add your name to the mailing list here: carversconnection.com/new-product-announcment/ Very soon I will be announcing a limited run of wide carving boards from Exegi Snowboards in Golden BC. you know James, after browsing endlessly for a board that would accommodate my modest size 11,5 just because I want to get into the wonderful world of Trench digging...I feel your rant. I can't find a proper production board for shit. I live in the Netherlands, do I have many hills to board on? No. That doesn't help justifying the price of getting a custom board which I can only bust out 2 times per year and absolutely go crazy on and is thus the reason why I didn't get a custom board. I ended up buying a slightly older Jones board with enough waist width to allow me to tip it over as much as I do. The current industry is not at all welcoming to people who either 1. Tip the board over more than others do because carving is awesome or 2. Have slightly bigger feet than the average person. If you're 11 or higher and you are into real carving, you are shit out of luck. That's just the way it is. But then again, not everyone is 6'4, has larger than a size 11 boot, weighs 220+ pounds and likes to carve, it is also the way it is. Regardless, I don't think I comment much on your videos but I still want to show my admiration for your impeccable style and what you are doing for carving, I hope I see more people get close to the slope in the coming years :).

      Fortunately, carving isn't one of those sports like climbing or cycling where a few extra pounds will seriously impact your performance. Having said that, being fit and healthy will certainly help you ride more runs each day and avoid injury. More important than body composition is core strength, followed closely by leg strength and endurance. If you want to perform at your best I recommend starting a calisthenics routine, or a mixed weights and calisthenics routine with a focus on the core and lower body exercises. Aim to develop functional strength, choosing isometric exercises for the core that promote stability (i.e. planks and hollow body holds over sit-ups) and compound exercises like Romanian deadlifts and squats over leg press machines. James, started to put this stuff into practice today and WOW! Immediate improvements. Thank you so much for the great video! One thing you mentioned that I totally feel is how really turning your upper body towards the nose of the board on heelside tightens up the turn immediately - is there any specific "equivalent" movement on toeside that you focus on to really tighten up the turns?

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves Месяц назад

      @@petemaunderhoops Yes. Try to focus on dropping the knees to the snow while maintaining level shoulders. Lower body bends into the turn, upper body bends away from the turn. Dropping the knees increases the angulation of the board which will tighten the turn up, the level shoulders will ensure that you're applying force directly down on that edge and keeping it in the carve. Where are you? How's the snow there?

    I have a question about the bord choice you talk about. You kind of speak out against "all mountain bords". Would you say that the Jones Flagship for instance is not a smart buy? I have an ultra mountain twin that i like a lot but planning to get something directional for charging and long carves next winter.

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 2 месяца назад

      Yeah... I don't have an issue with all mountain boards per se, they certainly have a place and I have enjoyed many of them. Likely, an all mountain is a smart choice for many riders. What I'm trying to push back against is this idea of the "one board quiver". The industry is always marketing the ultimate board for all terrain and all conditions;; one boot, one binding, one stance and one board to do it all. This is not done in other sports, except for entry level gear. Climbers have different shoes for different types of rock, paddlers have multiple boats and paddles for various purposes, serious mountain bikers have different rides for downhill;, cross country, gravel and commuting, for example. My point is that for high performance riding, snowboarders should be willing to change their stance, their bindings, their boot setup, and their board depending on what they intend to ride that day, or even that run. My setup for carving is wildly different than my setup for powder, which again is wildly different from my backcountry setup. Most days I drive up to the mountain with more than one board in my car. So just check your expectations. No board that floats on pow and turns tight in the trees is also going to hold an edge carving at high speed on steeps. And conversely, no great carving board is going to fun in a mogul field. If you want high performance equipment and if you ride a variety of terrain and conditions, you're going to have to build yourself a quiver. That Jones Flagship can certainly have a prominent place in this quiver, but it's not a quiver on its own. If you want a hard charging directional carver, the Jones Freecarver series is better suited. But even this board, like every other medium price production snowboard, is not a high performance carving board. It is, in fact, an all mountain board which leans a little more than average toward carving. For a real high performance carving board, try the Oxess CX series, or get in touch with Carl at Exegi Snowboards for something custom that's not outrageously expensive. If you have big feet and want a wide, high performance directional carver, get on the waitlist for a C4 166 from Jasey-Jay Anderson here: carversconnection.com/product/jasey-jay-working-title-snowboards-copy-2/

    Hey James thanks for an excellent video and I'm definitely going to gives a lot of these tips a red hot go when I'm next on the slopes. I've got a couple of questions: You mentioned that a dedicated carving snowboard should be about 2cm wider at the waist than you mondo boot size. My mondo sizing + 2cm puts me at 30cm waist width which is basically custom made territory like Donek. Some Jones and Koruas come in at about 270ish at the waist. Is this correct? With a posi/posi stance angle wouldn't you be effectively decreasing the boot width on the board because of the angle itself? Keen to understand this particular point. Thanks!

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 2 месяца назад

      Yeah, correct on both counts. Some people get away with carving narrower boards by using a down-unweighted turn technique and/or bending excessively at the knees. My personal style requires a wider board and risers to avoid boot out. A posi-posi stance won't help much to reduce boot out or overhang. Whether your back foot is 12 degrees positive or 12 degrees negative, your overhang will be about the same. Also, there's very little difference between 12 and 15 degrees in terms of boot overhang, whereas the difference between 27 and 30 degrees is much greater. I think this is part of the reason we see Asian carvers riding super steep stances like +45/+30. I prefer a wider board and a more relaxed stance, like +27/+12. Another good way to reduce your overhang is to use a binding like Flow without a heelcup. Changing to a Flow binding can reduce your overhang by 1.5 cm to 3cm depending on what you're changing from. (See my Secrets Part II - Interface video for more details about the BO factor.) But even with Flow bindings, I ride mondo boot size plus 3 to 4cm. @RyanKnapton rides mondo size plus 6 to 8cm! Check out Exegi Snowboards if you're looking for a basic custom carving board. They're way better than Doneks for about the same price. If you want to go right to the top of the line, get on the waitlist for a JJA C4 here: carversconnection.com/product/jasey-jay-working-title-snowboards-copy-2/ You'll run into boot out issues pretty quick when you start practicing the tips and drills, and you can get your board higher up on its edge.

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 3 месяца назад

      I think that's a West Coast board. Stranda makes carving specific boards too, one of those would definitely be better for east Coast carving. Rumour is that a second batch of JJA C4s will be announced this summer. Get on the wait list here: carversconnection.com/product/jasey-jay-working-title-snowboards-copy/

    I used to carve a 360 around a Slow sign 20 years ago at Solitude in softboots on a Winterstick Severe Terrain 166. And then once got a skier a talking to from Ski Patrol because he followed my carve under a slow area staggered rope line. Patroller didn't see me and then the skier pointed me out in the lift line. He knew me and gave me a grin and shook his head slightly and let the skier off with a warning. "Don't follow that guy."

    hi , i see you have a never summer proto fr. this board is good for any kind of snow? i meant ice conditions, groomers, soft snow. and this board carve well? i need a board to go all day in any conditions of snow and at the same time to learn how to carve well. thanks

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 4 месяца назад

      Yes, I would recommend this board for everyday all mountain riding. It's not the best carver but it's pretty good, and it's one of the widest production boards on the market so it reduces boot out. It's somewhat slow for carving but that can be a good thing for steeps and for learning.

    • @carloseduardovivasparra1727

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 4 месяца назад

      @@carloseduardovivasparra1727 Not really. This is what I use for all mountain, the base profile lets me make tight turns in trees and the extra width allows me to carve once I come out of the trees and hit the groomers. If you want a dedicated carving board then I recommend you go to to this page: carversconnection.com/product/jasey-jay-working-title-snowboards-copy-2/ and get on the waiting list for the next batch of C4 boards from Jasey-Jay Anderson. These are incredible boards for learning to carve; unmatched on ice, soft snow and chopped groom, but not so great off piste.

      @cherrycarves 5 месяцев назад

      I think I said that it's way harder and it is, especially on steeps. Ryan is a friend, a visionary and an inspiration, but he doesn't carve steeps (yet). You can struggle for years to smooth out the heelside chatter, or try it my way (posi-posi, 27/12).

    Bummer, looks like powerride boot stiffeners aren't in the game anymore! Or at least their website is down. Seemed like a simple enough concept that I wanted to check it out. Cool to hear of Coiler as well. Always interested in high end carve focused shred stuff. Sounds like the dude won't be making any new stuff for rando folks anymore though. BUMMER!

    Hey James! what are you’re favorite board brands? It’s basically impossible to really tell how good a board for carving is when the websites all say that theirs is the best. I’m just getting into the world of carving and only have a couple boards, one of them is too small, and the other is the korua Cafe racer which once again, I can’t compare to any others because i’m not even old enough to get a job ;-;

    • @cherrycarves
      @cherrycarves 5 месяцев назад

      Well, count yourself lucky that your parents are still buying your boards then! To recommend a board, I will need to know your height, weight, and boot size. And your budget, since the best carving boards are not cheap! Best to sign up and start a topic in the forum at carversconnection.com. Add any video you might have or even some photos of your setup. We can get into more details there. The Cafe Racer is decent, but it's more of an all around board than carving specific.

      @@cherrycarves My parents told me the next board I would get would be with my own money, but i’m only a year away from being able to get a job. Like you said, carving boards are not cheap but i’m willing to work for basically however long it would take, so I’ll make my budget $1,500. Im 5,9 currently and weigh about 65 kg (145lbs). My snowboard boot size is 10. Thanks for being one of the few creators who responds and gives expert advice!

      p.s. I still haven’t reached my full height so i’d like one that i can ride for basically my entire life. I probably will grow 2-3 inches more in high school also.

      @user-nz7te2bo7f Hey Jake. 1500 USD should be enough to get you a high performance board. There are only two custom builders who make wide titanal soft boot freecarving boards, Coiler is no longer taking new clients but Jasey-Jay Anderson is still going strong. So that's what I recommend and there really aren't any other similar options right now. Carversconnection.com is currently sold out but there may be another small batch released this summer or fall. There's a waiting list you can join at the store on the website. You can also go directly to JJA himself for a custom board but that might blow your budget. And I would say you're never too young to make some money. My eight year old daughter sells baby chicks from our incubator, and when she can reach the tractor pedals, she'll be plowing the neighbours' driveways through winter too, for example.
