A great turn leaves only a pencil line track in the snow, maximizing g-force and energy return by minimizing snow displacement and dragging body parts. Speed is controlled through turn shape rather than by braking or scrubbing snow.
It feels like riding a rollercoaster, only better because you are the power source! It's intense, committing and dangerous on the Revelstoke steeps but it's just so soul satisfying... The feeling is addictive, and when the groom is good you'll just want to do it faster with bigger sidecuts and stiffer boards on steeper, narrower runs with more angular acceleration and more g-force!
Notwithstanding the recent resurgence of carving and the availability of wider boards, it's kind of a lost art. It's really not that hard to learn but good instruction is very hard to find; not that many people can consistently carve smooth heelside turns on steep black diamonds, even fewer can teach you how. This is my specialty.

I got my boot stiffeners and straps. Thanks for the fast delivery to Finland. Stiffeners are good quality plastic, and I like that they wrap around my ankle and stay in place. I use them with my Burton ION Step-on boots (US11) and they fit perfectly under the outer boot. No pressure or pain. I use double stiffeners, and the boot feels nice and stiff, but not super stiff. Not sure, but it seems to me that when you have two thinner together, they shape better on your boot than just one thicker. Not sure thou. The straps are bit more complicated due the lacing system of ION. I need to tighten them over the lace pulleys etc. But they seem to work fine. You really need two straps with these boots, because the lower one prevents the top one to slide down while carving. Overall, I'm very happy! And thanks for the stickers too. I mostly ride Stranda Pipeliner 2 and Cheater 170W with 10 mm OJK med risers and Burton Step On X (30/15). With the stiffeners and straps my carving is now even more enjoyable. Mahalo.
hi James. I decided to start carving. Technical question. I have big feet, and even if I tilt the direction of the bindings a lot, I still have a toe sticking out of the board (this with a freeride board). From the video it seems that you 4 carving use nice wide boards and I wanted to ask you how much does the width of the board influence the carving technique? Because here in Italy all those who carve use narrow boards, which has always demoralized me, cause I could never use that type of thin boards. Basically, what board do you recommend for a big foot? Thank you
@@francosarti3804 The width does not affect the technique much, but it does affect the performance a lot because there's less boot drag! There are a couple of wide boards for sale at carversconnection.com and I have one more to post soon and more coming all the time. Reach out to me at jamescherry@carversconnection.com if you want a recommendation

What does JJ (or you) consider a high enough SB angle to require lifts? I’m running 36/21 and don’t really feel the need but I don’t have a lot of time on it yet.
@@neilgendzwill3260 Hey Neil. That's definitely steep enough for lift! "Require" is a strong word, but rider with a posi-posi stance over, say, 9/21 could benefit from some lift. Last season you were riding 27/12 if I recall. What happened? Did you start booting out and go steeper? Experiment with a little lift and see how it feels. I like it a lot. I put custom lifts in about six pairs of bindings over the past few seasons, keeping only my pow bindings flat. Canted risers are here now, will be available in the web store in a few days. These offer the heel and toe lift and they will get you higher off the board to reduce boot out and add leverage.
@ I left it at 27/12 on my freeride board and decided to try steeper on my carving board and liked it. I was never much of one for lifts even on my alpine decks. I run just the stock F2 heel lift there, no toe lift. Bear in mind my stance is narrow, like 20”.
@neilgendzwill3260 Right on. There will be a set of canted risers in the demo tent at MCC you can test ride
Killer video, and it's awesome seeing Jasey on your home mountain. GNU made an asymmetrical board called the Park Pickle about 15 years ago that I believe had a softer flex on the heelside to help with carving. I would love to see more Asym board designs!
@@irsever That was a cool board but it was a twin so any rider could use it. Gnu has pushed some boundaries for sure but hasn't really offered anything I would choose for real carving. You'll see more Asym designs in my next video. Testing now.
James your videos are great. I’m hooked on trying to learn to carve, and will be watching everything you post, but I had to second the comment that was asking for more diverse instruction. I’ve ridden for years but I know my technique could definitely improve in all aspects, not just on the groomer days. My top vote would be how to approach riding tighter / steeper trees. Even if you stick with just carving videos, you have my sub for life, just hoping you have even more wisdom to share with your specific teaching style. Keep up the great work!
@@timsawchuk8441 Thanks man! Carving is my specialty, and my niche on RUclips. Hundreds of guys are making videos on riding trees, moguls and park. Plus, I have more instructional carving videos I want to publish before I'm searching for more topics to cover. These videos take a fair bit of time to prepare, and riding is still my top priority in winter.
Thanks for this, James and Jasey Jay! I love how clear you are on posi stance for carving! The arguments I've been pushed to have with some militant Donek team riders (not Ryan) about this have been draining, frustrating and ridiculous... Hahaha.... So thanks! You give me hope, Jasey Jay!
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel Right on! The master has spoken, maybe that will put the arguments to rest for a little while. I say, if someone wants to ride duck, let them ride duck. But if that person wants to carve up-unweighted pencil turns on steeps, they should try posi-posi... But I'm with Jasey on this for sure. I tried carving the 15/-15 stance for a couple of days earlier this season, just to see how far I could take it and maybe put together some tips for duck stance carving. My knees hurt and I lost a lot of control on heelside. Plus, my favourite move (the carved 360) was way harder. Not sure I'll try that again.
@@cherrycarves I agree, and I couldn't care less about how people set up their boards. Each to their own. I'm just tired of being almost intentionally misunderstood by a particular crowd when I say "it is more efficient to get into a stable, functional position in a heel turn with +/+ angles". They won't stop pointing at Ryan or themselves to say "you're wrong! he's duck! I'm duck! (...)", while ignoring the very simple nuance: they carve well despite their stance, not BECAUSE of their stance... ;-) But I'm preaching to the choir! :-)
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel But how is your switch carving? lol I'm joking... I think some people just like to stir up debates. It's cool to see anyone that knows how to use their edges.
@@TheDerekHyde I agree!! That's why it drives me nuts when my applied nuance is almost intentionally being ignored....
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel Rob Stevens is on his way here now! He's the perfect representative for team duck stance. I'll see if I can a debate going and film it!
Fun video... Wish I could of joined you :(
@@Fadesign100 For sure! Maybe next year, I think he'll be back...
Thank you James you nailed why I asked......Casey Jay thanks for your input
@@russbritt4100 Yeah, I had a feeling you might be looking for less g-force, not more...
Hi Russ, G-force is not to be confused with gravity that pulls us towards the centre of the Earth. The G force in a turn is the force that is required to change our direction of motion. The only 2 factors involved in the calculation are speed and turn radius. G Force = (speed x speed) / turn radius So for any given speed a larger radius turn produces less G force. Double the radius and halve the force. Double the speed and G force is now 4 (2 squared) times higher. Hope that answers your original question. Cheers Alan M

If toe and heel drag are not a concern, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using a wider snowboard for carving in a posi-posi stance with higher edge angles?
What principles underpin YOUR use of binding lift and cant for hardboots? for softboots?
@@riotsupercarver7467 Another great question... We might have to set up the camera again
We did! Hope you enjoyed that super technical response!
In the latter stages of your racing career you had an isolation plate with a mechanism in the middle. What was the design principle and what was it designed to do?
I've watched all of everybody's vids on carving and one thing everyone assumes and doesn't talk about is you need to try every permutation of what each board is asking for so that you are standing in the balance point of the board design you own. Everything else fits around that. As people look to improve they should go maybe 9 degrees back and 24 degrees front, set the stance back on the board and keep moving it until their board locks in and have forward lean with the goal of mostly equal pressure on both binding backs so you can adjust in the turn as needed. Everything else is secondary to this first principle in my opinion. I wish someone had framed it like this for me. I would have found the lock in much sooner. And yes boot drag is a big deal on heel side much more than toe. Toe drag is less disruptive than heel drag due to the leverage angles on heel side. So set those angles and move the bindings towards toe side by default. (my 2 cents)
What radius puts the most g forces on the legs during the turn ? A long radius or a short radius
Greetings from Europe, the Extreme Carving fraction. Overall I like your explanations a lot. One of the few proper explanations. But what surprised me was the implicit assumption everybody is riding with a positive stance. I would have thought that is the first thing to talk about. In Europe everybody has a duck stance setup and almost nobody can carve. Wonder if there is a connection ;-) Extreme (Euro) Carving is not about stutter with the board as you indicated, it is not even a side effect. It aims at the pencil line as well but on the steepest slopes to be found. The velvet.pro video you showed is a prime example - they are not losing grip even once. All smooth, elegant, precise. The other point you made is that Extreme Carving slows you down. Correct. The result is you can carve even double black diamond runs in a controlled fashion. You want to slow down, that is the goal. For racing, Extreme carving is the wrong technique. Too wide turns, too much friction.
@@wdaehn There is a significant difference between Russian Extreme Carving and Eurocarving generally. I aim for up unweighted pencil lines on double black diamond groomers with minimal body dragging and maximum conservation of momentum in the turns. Some people like to lie down on the snow, that's fine of course but it's not my preferred style. It's just a question of preference. I prefer to slow down by turning 190 degrees ir more, back up the hill. I find this very satisfying. I chose that video to show because it's an excellent example of well executed Extremecarving. Posi-posi stance is assumed, yes. I may make another video eventually for duck stance carving but that stance has limitations, especially for steep carving, and it's not my specialty.
Thoughts on rotation vs counter rotation of the upper body in toe turns
Great question! And something that I've been trying to figure out myself. I think when you're cranking higher edge angles you really need to counter in order to get the angulation that you need to properly stack your weight over the edge. It seems like all the expert carvers do it when they need to... but if they're just going down the fall line they'll just "drive-the-bus" and rotate into the turn (anticipation in CASI speak).
Stance, highback lean and binding angles in soft boots
Ben Karl ditched Kessler's Titanal boards for Virus's Zylons construction boards, then boom-Olympic gold and the crystal globe! Lots of World Cup racers are doing the same now, so is Titanal construction outdated.
Very interesting. I want to know more

What's the minimum difference in binding angles for soft snowboards?
@@patlatenkiy Do you mean the minimum splay? So if you ride +30 front +15 back the splay would be 15 degrees. Is that what you're asking?
@cherrycarves Yes, it is. I know it is not recommended to set a total difference in binding angles less than 15° or more than 30°, as these stances can hurt knees; however, some riders don't follow this guideline (e.g., 33°/24°; 36°/30°).
Incredible explanation of a lot of complex body positions elements! One question I have is around weigh distribution between front to rear foot *as* we’re working through these exercises. Any tips on loading each foot while focusing on the try? Thanks

Did you try Jones FreeCarver 6m ? 27.95 front foot 28.31 back foot
@@dinubunica I have ridden that board, yes. It exceeded my expectations for such a short board with tight radius but it's not even in the ballpark of what I ride when it comes to performance or width. My next board, for example, is 30.6cm in the waist, 175cm long with a 14m sidecut radius. It's full metal construction and asymmetrical. So you can see why that Freecarver 6000 is not a real carving board from my perspective. It's maybe a decent all mountain board but NeverSummer makes them wider, quicker turning with their base profiles, and they carve plenty good for all mountain production boards.
