How To Make Limoncello - Great Gift Idea!
So simple & delicious! This easy recipe would make a great birthday or host/hostess gift.
Use ONLY organic lemons. Citrus peels hold the chemicals that are sprayed on them. I can't stress enough - only use organic!
Here's the recipe:
8-10 organic lemons peeled. You're using the peels ONLY.
Place peels into a quart sized glass jar & cover with vodka to the neck of the jar.
Put a lid on the jar & place in your cabinet for 2-4 weeks. I forgot mine & it went 6 weeks. That's fine.
Shake jar daily to extract all the delicious lemon oil.
When you're ready to decant, make 3 cups of simple syrup, let it cool & pour cooled syrup & lemon extract into a larger container to hold. Let it sit for 1 week for t...

      @@hiddenhen We use home grown, organically cared for garlic & I haven’t had any experience with this issue. I’d say, if you’re able, find a trusted source for organic garlic. I haven’t dealt with garlic rust at all but it sounds like you have. If there’s a way to see the plant and not just buy the bulb that may help in your selection. Another way to minimize this problem would be to grow your own then there would be no doubt as to its health. Thank you for watching!

      That’s the thing with organic solutions. A rain or a good garden watering and you have to reapply. Through the JADAM method I’ve learned that the addition of Castile soap will make the product “sticky longer. In the end, I’m willing to make repeated trips to keep chemicals outside of our garden but not everyone has that luxury.

    I just had my husband till up a 5x6 area in our upper lawn for growing 3 NG candy roaster squash! We never use our upper lawn and just let it die back in the summer, so since I’m a firm believer in the saying “grow food, not grass”, it’s gonna be perfect! Loads of room to spread out. I dug 3 deep holes and put in chunks of freezer burnt salmon, banana peal and coffee grounds in each one. Then added a big shovel full of a mix of compost, steer manure and old potting soil from last year. Then I mixed the native soil (it’s sand. I live in the pacific NW. we don’t actually have soil) with more of the good soil mix and filled in the holes. When my candy roaster starts get planted next month, I will be so excited!! We do have a long growing seasons but the temps are mild. Rarely over 89 and mostly 70’s. I’m a gardening nut and I am so excited to grow these beauties! I CAN’T WAIT! Oh, and no, my husband doesn’t think I’m nuts for wanting the upper yard covered in squash vines. He just says OK Hon. I loved your video! Have you learned anything else about the candy roasters you could share?

      So happy for you. We feel the same way. Even the flowers we plant are edible. No wasted food space! Hmmm, I’d say that last year my days were very full & I wasn’t as good about checking the squash. While they are an easy grower, I should’ve watered better (I was hit and miss on watering) and that lead to less than healthy plants that took a beating from squash bugs. All my fault. I adore making “pumpkin pie” out of them & think they taste better than pumpkin! Be sure when you harvest & prep to cook, to save those seeds. Let them dry completely. Those seeds have a fabulous sprout rate. Enjoy & thanks for watching!!

      This recipe creates two 5 gallon buckets. 2 each 5 gallon buckets 1 cup borax 1/2 cup washing soda (not baking soda) 1 whole bar Fels Naptha soap grated Melt grated soap in a pot on your stove with about 1 quart of water, until it’s completely dissolved. Fill a 5 gallon bucket half way up with hot water. Add melted soap, washing soda & borax. Stir until it’s all dissolved. I use a battery drill & paint mixer attachment. Fill the same bucket with hot water to about an 1” or 2 from the top. Cover & let sit over night. It’s going to gel up. Next day, break up the gel (drill with paint mixer attachment comes in handy again). Transfer half the soap to the other 5 gallon bucket. Add hot water to both buckets to fill back to 1”-2” from top. Done. During the summer I don’t transfer to another bucket. I use the laundry soap at the stronger strength for more cleaning power.

      I clean my freeze dryer after each use. There are fine particles that develop as the freeze dryer does it’s magic. I want to be very certain to keep it in top shape. I use warm water, dampen a wash rag or sponge & wipe out the unit after it defrosts. I don’t find it necessary to do a thorough cleaning (each & every shelf) every single time but I do inspect it closely for residue. I find that anything I freeze dry does emit an odor. Typically I will run smellier things such as onions or garlic in warmer weather with the windows open (the room my dryer is in has 2 windows). Liver did give off a vague odor but it didn’t make it through the house.

    I just can't justify the cost of a Harvest Right machine and all the bags, oxygen absorbers, and electricity unless I was going to sell what I dried. You're right about dog treats and food. It's robbery what they are charging for stuff. Also: You never said how long it took to dry the liver and hearts. How long did the machine run?

    • @arusticrenaissance
      @arusticrenaissance 11 месяцев назад

      I use mine to preserve our garden harvest & that’s priceless for us. Along with treats for the dogs, I make tea blends, dried herbs for cooking along with freeze drying any leftovers we have. It’s a steep price & we are lucky to own one. As for offering times, I don’t mention this because it’s different for everyone. There are all kinds of “it depends” moments. Do you prefreeze or not? What’s your weather like the day you run the machine (humid or not humid). What’s the indoor temp of the room you have it in. Do you run fans on the machine (I do to keep the machine & room cool). How full are your trays? The thickness of what’s on the tray? All these things will change operation time. My run times will not be the same as someone else’s. Herbs dry the quickest for me. Usually about 9 hours. Most other things I dry take around 24 hours. I don’t run super watery items like melons so I have no idea times for those. It’s truly a owner by owner situation.

    What I like to do, learned this from a science guy, is to weigh each tray at the start of the process and then, when it is "complete" I will weigh the trays again (make sure to record down to grams and not ounces) and then I will put it back in for another hour or two. Then I will weigh again and compare. If no more grams are lost then it is done. If more than a couple are lost...then I will put it in for another couple hours. Once no grams of weight are being lost then it is done because that "weight" is the moisture you want to remove from the product. I have a spreadsheet on my ipad to keep track of every batch as I work.

    I grew the Georgia candy roaster squash this year, one plant, and it has about 8 to 10 fruits on the vines. My problem is I trained the vines up a fence and a couple fruits have broken off and fallen off. Will these be edible even though I won’t be able to cure them? I know that some squash need time to cure before the sweetness develops.

    • @arusticrenaissance
      @arusticrenaissance Год назад

      I have not had that happen but if it were me I’d first take into account the color. How orange (how close to ripe) is it? Also, I’d probably experiment. I’d let one rest & see if it continues to ripen without expecting to store it. I’d cut into the other & see if it’s edible. I’m sorry I don’t have any real experience with underripe squash.

      @@ceepark114 Did you roast it in the skin? I don’t have that texture issue but maybe put them on a wire rack next time? You could poke some holes in the skin, place them skin down on the wire rack & have the rack sitting on a cookie sheet (to catch the moisture). Maybe that would help? I agree, way better than pumpkin & I have a terrible time growing pumpkins here 🤷‍♀️. It makes a good pie too!

      They typically mature around 90 to 110 days after planting, depending on your growing conditions. But if you aren’t a numbers person like me, I go by the color of the skin. Someday I’ll keep a diary of exactly when to harvest each veggie… someday. When the squash is fully mature, the skin will have a deep orange or tan color. There may still be a bit of green at the bottom or even sometimes a green stripe or two so be sure to keep an eye on the orange or tan. Mine have always been a lovely orange like the one you see in the video. Additionally, the skin should be firm and hard to the touch. Another sign to look for is the drying of the stem. Once the stem is dry, your squash should be harvested it’s not being nourished anymore. Happy Growing!

      Believe it or not but I do nothing. When we lived in Wisconsin (zone 4) I plopped some in a pallet and they did a nice job. Things got busy so that fall & winter I never had a chance to repot or cover them. I figured “Oh well, I’ll just have to rebuy next season and start over”. The darned things came back the following spring!! So, having seen that with my own eyes, I let them go here too. Just left in the pallet. And I’ll be darned the same thing happened. They came back! Plus some had reached the ground as runners and just last week I dug those runners up and repotted them to start more pallet growers!! They are surprisingly hardy!

    Just paint your IBC. Plastic, measure, sticky tape seems time consuming. Paint it, it takes 10 min. and it is permanent... Not sure if this method is really practical.

    • @arusticrenaissance
      @arusticrenaissance Год назад

      It’s been 2 years since this video and the wrap has held up just fine. No tears, no holes. What we are showing is an alternative to painting (which takes many cans & it scratches easily). Wrapping with plastic seen here or buying the premade wraps that are sold on Amazon are choices for those that want to explore their options. Some may want to take those 10 minutes you mention & spay the cage and all. We prefer the look of the silver & took the time to disassemble &! remove the tote. Again, an option for those that may not want to spray the entire IBC.
