Awesome Epoxy And CNC Upgrade. Jessem Jig Sneak Peek.
Excellent. Thank you,
If you live in a metric country, as I do, you'll find that JessEm offers the new stainless dowelling jig in metric as well. Just scroll down on the JessEm website page for the kits and you'll see the metric kit clickable lead.
excellent Matt, first time I have understood doweling jigs
You should be a teacher you are the best I herd so far Sean Ireland What make is you CNC
Great video, I love the instruction based upon the physical dimensions of the jig and the lumber rather than a lecture on measuring and marking to match.
I bought the new stainless based on videos like this. Some would say pricey, I say price a Festool Domino and see what you think of it. Even so, I can also afford the Dowelmax as well for the price of Festool.
Thanks for sharing..yes, I'm shopping for a dowel jig and this appears to be the clear winner..watched "how to" vids for all, including DowelMax. I have other tools from Jessem and all work as expected..Thanks again for the information and education..consider me subscribed
Very helpful thank you
How does the jig work on 45° mitered ends? Thank you for your tutorial. .I am needing to build a bathroom vanity.
Cudos, well done,. I will buy the new one. thanks
Could you share how to do shelf / middle of panel joints with the stainless version?
Yes. I am going to do a new video soon on some dowel joints, and this will be one of them. Stay tuned and thanks for watching.
Came out great! Thanks for the educational video!
JUNK FLIMSY GARBAGE.....great headline.....like trump said it himself
Great video. Thanks Matt! Two questions: 1) In the last example you said to measure down about 2.5" and then it ended up exactly flush. Is that because your board was exactly 1" thick so you added half of that 1" (.5") to the 2" offset to make that work? 2) Would these same joints work the same way with the new SS version of this tool?
That 2ish inch measurement isn't precise. The top piece just needs to be far enough away so it's not in the way of your jig so the fence is tight to the top edge. But close enough so the slot in your jig can reference the dowel. That measurement can change based on thickness of material and the length of dowels you use. Hope that makes sense. Yes, the SS jig will work the same. But it's a lot thinner. So, for some of the joints, you might need to add a spacer, 1/4" should be enough, under it so the slot can reference the dowels and not slide under them. Also, keep in mind, the center line measurement on the original jig is 2", while it's 1 3/4" on the SS jig. These measurements are printed on the jigs. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
What kind of square did you use
This is the set I have - amzn.to/3C9N9as Excellent squares. I also added the link in the description. Thanks for watching.
Matt, your explanations are excellent.
I appreciate it. Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I especially liked your explanation of using the array feature of Vectric VCarve; well done! Should I elect to use PVC for my positioning, I'd probably use smaller diameter PVC piping, as it would be a better option for the work I do. Notwithstanding, your concept is directly applicable to any workholding method employing circular holes. Thanks, Matt!
1/2" PVC would work fine I'm sure. I'm an electrician by trade and had some 3/4" conduit laying around. Lol! Use what you got. Thanks for watching.
I'm in the market for a Doweling jig. I'm drawn between the JessEm and the DowelMax. I was unaware that there are two JessEm models. Thanks for the heads up. I will continue my research before I commit myself to a purchase. 💛💜💛
I've never used the Dowel Max but it seems to be a quality tool. I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever you decide to buy. The deciding factor for me was price and simplicity. JessEm seems more bang for your buck. With Dowelmax, by the time you get a few different size drill guides, 45 adapter, spacers, etc., its quite a bit more expensive than the JessEm jig and there's a lot of parts. Just a few things to consider. Happy shopping!
I was in the same boat! For me it came down to clamping built into the tool and spacers (Dowelmax) or my own clamping and ease of adjustability with a thumb screw (Jessem). I decided to go with Jessem and this video helped guide me to the stainless steel jig because of a) price and b) ease of adjustability. I think it represents a great value and will be INFINITELY better than what I have today.
Thanks for sharing this, I just ordered the same complete set that you have and I’ll definitely refer back to your video if I encounter any issues.
I hope its perfect right out of the box for you. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the great info.
You are very welcome.
This is brushless motor?
I returned this unit and got a FLEXiO 5000. Here's the video on it - ruclips.net/video/OBDwAsrfIOE/видео.html I went through the FLEXiO 5000 manual and I couldn't see anywhere where it said it has a brushless motor. As far as the motor is concerned, it just talks about the X-Boost Turbine which is in the X-Boost Power Box. However it does say that there are no customer serviceable parts in the power box. If it had a brushed motor I would assume there would be some way to replace worn out brushes. So that leads me to believe it is a brushless motor. I reached out to Wagner but haven't heard back. If I do I'll let you know. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
I heard back from Wagner today. They said it does have a brushless motor.
How do you line up the Dowels for a 45 degree waterfall edge? Do you just transfer the markings?
You could carefully measure and mark locations and that would work. But I referenced the edge of the jig to the edge of the work piece, clamped the jig and drilled 2 holes. Then I used those holes and the pins to space out the rest of my holes. Just repeat on the other work piece and the jig will line up the holes for you. If you watch the video from the 12:50 mark at 1/4 speed it should make sense. Thanks for watching.
Thanx for this it is perfect for my setup as well…
You're welcome. It's a great setup. I really like it.
Them Jessem tools are beatiful and very well made. Canadians make some excellent tools
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
"just do it" is THE advice! i add "just do YOUR OWN stuff!" i was totally fine with wasting time and cheap materials on my first tries with my laser cutter and i learned more than every tutorial was able to tell me in the same time.
Love that! Experience is a great teacher. Thanks for watching!
good video
Thank you!
I just got a care package from Garrett! The personalization was a really nice touch!
That's awesome! Garrett and his team are great people. I now have about 20 bits from him and they are top notch. His videos got me started learning CNC and Vectric software. Definitely and guy I will continue to support.
i've used a dowelmax for years, now i'm building a new router table with jessem stuff. the quality is excellent and they are all made here in canada. dowelmax used to be made in canada, not anymore. i visited the jessem factory in new brunswick canada in august and was sold on their router table stuff. amazing people and facility
A factory tour would be awesome. I recently got a new router lift for my table. I really wanted the JessEm but they don't make one that fit my cutout. I had to go with Grizzly. It's very smooth and precise so I'm happy. But yeah, love all my JessEm tools.
I bought this and I use it absolutely the best I can and boards are almost always out by 1mm, especially when doing 90 degree joints. I am so dissapointed, you would think it would be easy but it is never very precise. And I am even double checking and triple checking that everything is flush and square, and I am referencing the proper side, and i clamp everything to make sure nothing moves.
That's strange. My first thought was that you are getting your reference sides reversed. But you say you're checking that. When I have faces that aren't flush, 99% of the time I got my reference faces messed up. I just get them right, re-drill, and its fine. It sounds like you're doing everything correct. I would have to see your setup to give any real advice. Sorry I can't help you further. Maybe something is up with the jig and JessEm can help. It should be very precise.
Very well explained. I bought the jig on sale a while back and only used it once. This was a great refresher. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Matt, just starting out in furniture/ woodwrking, I find great value in your videos. So thank you my friend you're doing a great job.
Awesome! I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the real, truthful review. I am sure I am not the only one that appreciates it. :)
That's my goal. Thanks for watching!
New to V Carve Pro. Great Video! Making it look easy not over complicating the process!!
Thanks. It really is an incredible piece of software. I have much to learn on it but yes, the basics are not to difficult once you get some time on it. RUclips channels Learn Your CNC and IDC Woodcraft have great tutorial videos. That's where I learned node editing which is incredible helpful. Thanks for watching!
Why not just add two wooden fences perpendicular to each other? With a gap in the lower left corner for calibration. People seem to over think the fence.
That would block the ends of the spoil board. Often the work piece being carved doesn't entirely fit on the spoil board. With fences in the way, how would you do a tiled carve on a 6' long piece of wood? The fence must be modular and removable. Small pieces of PVP are solid, secure, easily movable, and easy to store.
Thank you so much. I just got mine, and I was lost til i found your video.
You're welcome. Glad the video was helpful.
I think I am too "Old School" I just don't get the concept of spending so much money on a "Track Saw" which is a one trick pony! I have broken down tens of thousands of sheets of flat goods over my 43 years of construction with my 60.00 aluminum base Dewalt circular saw - for a straight edge, a simple straight 1x4 clamped at each end with a good blade. Change the blade to a framing blade and cut 2x lumber all day long. Some duct tape over the base, and an old framing blade, a perfect demo saw. You guys are spending so much money on really ridiculous gimmicks. Don't tell me it is faster, or more precise, as your "track" does the exact same thing as any thing that can be used as a straight edge to run a circular saw on. I actually have switched to a 49.00 Bauer 20v 6-1/2" battery saw, as it is half the weight, and will cut anything my 7-1/2" will except for deep cuts on a 45. Two 4 amp/hr batteries last an entire 8hr day of carpentry.
I've broken down sheets with a circular saw and table saw as well. I've have used the method you describe countless times. But the fact is, a track saw is faster and more precise for cutting sheet goods than a standard circular saw. And much easier and safer than on a table saw. Often, I don't have to clamp the track. That saves time. Just mark 2 points, no offset to think about, lay down the track and cut. The angle or location doesn't matter. And there can be no dispute that an extruded piece of aluminum is straighter and more precise then a random 1x4. You obviously have a lot of experience and what you do works for you. I know I'm not going to change your mind. But I have all the tools and have used them how you describe, and in many situations, I prefer the track saw. Might not be for everyone, but it's a great option to have IMO. Thanks for watching.
Hey Matt, any updates since you posted this video? Was interested about getting on after seeing your video, but still on the fence.
Bottom line, I really like this tool. If you like using dowel joints and have the JessEm jig I think it's well worth the $150. I've been getting more questions about this so I think a follow up video is in the near future. Stay tuned.
Thanks for sharing I really appreciate it
You're welcome. I did return this unit in favor of the FLEXiO 5000. Check out that video here - ruclips.net/video/OBDwAsrfIOE/видео.html
I keep coming back to this video to see if I missed something about the doweling workstation. With it discounted to $149.99 (I think they are closing it out and adapting it to the newer thin stainless steel jig), I am seriously considering purchasing it. One serious concern though…..you (and Jessum) show it being used to clamp boards vertically to drill into the end grain. Since the dovetail slots only run horizontally (and clamps don’t turn sideways), how would you clamp long boards to drill into the edge (not ends)? Thanks for any help on this. I’m not sure I can justify purchasing this workstation for only end drilling and then have to remove jig for edge drilling.
So I've been using the new SS jig to drill for edge glue ups. It works great. But if you wanted to do this with the Workstation, you could use an F-style clamp to span the top of the Workstation and clamp between the back of the Workstation and the work piece. It would probably be best to have the Workstation well secured to a heavy bench to prevent tipping when you are drilling towards the ends of your workpiece. I also think it would be nice to build a bench dedicated for the Workstation. One could incorporate a much larger clamping surface with horizontal and vertical dovetail slots. If I had more space in my little shop I would definitely do this. I hope this makes sense to you and is helpful. I think I will make a video demonstrating what I'm talking about. Stay tuned for that. Thanks for watching.
What is the height of the focusing cylinder? I lost mine and will have to make a new one
50mm
Sorry for the late response. I'm sure you figured this out by now but it's 50mm. One of the first things I did when I got this was 3D print a 50mm cylinder so I had a spare and a little holder for the cylinder. If you have access to a 3D printer there are many upgrades and mods available for the RAY5 on Thingiverse.
I bought the stainless set. It was warped. I sent it back and got the original set and it's great. I use dowels on a regular basis.
Sorry to hear that. I used the original for years. It's a very high quality tool as you well know. It now lives permanently in my JessEm Workstation. I have done a few videos on doweling jigs. This is one of my most popular - ruclips.net/video/wWifVB_w_Zk/видео.html This one is about the Workstation - ruclips.net/video/VXPAxz0Qxm4/видео.html Thanks for watching.
hallo, I have sainsmart 6050 what router can I put to be able to use 1/4 bits as small 1/8 bits and very limited?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with that machine. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer.
Great video and overview of the Festool sander. I’m considering getting one but maybe the 5” version.
Since making this video I have been able to use Mirka and 3M Extract sanders on a few occasions. I would still choose the Festool. I also added a Festool MIDI dust extractor. Its a great combo. The RO90DX is on my Christmas list.
@ Thanks for the additional info. I’ll probably buy the ETS EC 125 this weekend and maybe in the spring I’ll get the MIDI 🤞🏻👍🏻
I just ordered this Jesse Dowel Jig. Thank you for this video!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
My mouth tastes like Hubba Bubba now, thanks 😂 all jokes aside thanks for this video!
Thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hi Matt, Great comparison! You made the differences between the 4k and 5k clear and concise and explained why you returned the 4000. I was wondering about these things, and you made them clear as a bell in your video is most helpful. Thank you very much! 👍👍
Thanks. Glad the video was helpful.
Great demo! Thanks
You're welcome.
I purchased the weekend warrior kit of the stainless steel dowel jig and the 90 degree bracket was not square. It looks like it was not bent evenly either. One side was about 0.5 degrees out of square and the other side was about 0.7-0.8 degrees out of square. This caused some misalignment issues on a project before I caught this. Two days ago I took pictures proving the bracket was not square and I submitted a warranty claim with pictures on Jessem's website. They just emailed me letting me know they're sending me a replacement bracket free of charge, and that's with international shipping. Now I really wished the first bracket arrived perfectly square, but I feel like their customer service is trying to do right by me. I haven't received the 2nd bracket yet, but I have high hopes that my first bracket just came from a bad batch.
Just curious, have you received the replacement and is it square?
@ I did receive it. They shipped it internationally immediately free of charge, and the new one was square. The new one had a slightly modified design where they added these “indents” or “creases” (not sure what you would call them) in the elbow of the bracket. I’m assuming they modified the design to help keep it square.
Haven’t seen this one in a while.
It's a classic.
