Best Expert MTB Trail in Castlegar, BC - Captain Kangaroo
Today I ride the Captain Kangaroo MTB Trail in the Merry Creek Trail region of Castlegar, BC. The ride first involves a 700 meter climb up the very enjoyable and well built Merry Go Round and Mr. Green Jeans climb trails. Once in the high alpine, we then descend down the Captain where we encounter dozens of fun, technical rock rolls, some smooth bermy, flowy segments interspersed with steep eroded chutes and cross maybe a dozen wooden skinnies/ladder bridges. The Captain offers an incredible variety of technical features making for an awesome trail!

Best Expert MTB Trail in Nakusp, BC - Minty Fresh

Today I am riding the Minty Fresh MTB trail in the Mt. Abriel Recreation Area of Nakusp, BC. It's an excellent expert level trail that offers riders a dozen or so moderate (3-4') drops, a few steep janky chutes at the top, and a mostly bermy, flowy hand built singletrack with periodic views of the Arrow Lake valley below. Kudos to the local trail building association for an excellent job planni...

Near the end of Entrails, we will veer right and take Boney Elbows which is made up mostly of steep granite slabs and offe...

Most creative MTB trail in Squamish, BC - Hot Tuna

Hot Tuna in Squamish, BC is a very creative expert level, bermy jump trail with numerous optional ride-arounds. The trail features a half dozen small drops on the main black diamond line with 3 optional gap jumps in the 8-12 foot range - probably double black level gaps. But about mid way down, there is a pro-line option which features recently built ladder bridges to huge, 10-15 foot drops and...
Best Intermediate MTB trail in Sedona, AZ - Llama

Llama is a great singletrack trail for intermediate riders to get comfortable with a variety of trail conditions. I have a small bag full of square nails gathered while riding the Flume Trail in the 80’s. The sketchiest sections from then have been very much smoothed out.

      Very cool! So were the nails from the old, since removed rail ties from the railway?

    • @fsquared64
      @fsquared64 9 дней назад

      @@ronsanderson99 It wasn’t a railway, it was originally a wooden box flume that supplied water from Marlette Lake to Virginia City. Quite the engineering feat. The wooden flume was later replaced with an aluminum pipe, both of which have been removed now. Back in the mid 80’s when the trail was first opened there was wood and nails and pipe along most of the length. Tunnel Creek is so named because of the tunnel dug from the end of the flume to the eastern side of the ridge where the water was then piped down then across Washoe Valley and up to Virginia City. All gravity fed since Marlette Lake is higher than VC. There’s also an Incline Flume Trail continuing north from the end of the trail you rode. LOTS of history up there.

      Very diff than 20 years ago. It is smoothed out a lot, with the exception of the rock rolls. The rock rolls are still tough, especially a couple side hits. But the rest of the trail is NSMBA’d (with direction from Metro), with berms (🤮). In other words, smoothed out. Drops are gone. Very different trail. If you want trails like Cambodia was only a few years ago, you will have to go elsewhere.

    • @ronsanderson99
      @ronsanderson99 19 дней назад

      Trailforks ranks it as a green mostly because of the wide, smooth trail tread. I classify it as a blue because of the ledgy nature of the trails and that you’ve got to be careful not to enjoy the scenery while riding too much. The segments that are washed out with the landslide are probably black if you attempt to ride them but I’m thinking most riders will dismount and walk these sections. Like all trails, make sure to pay attention! And thanks for watching!

      Thanks for the comment. I wonder what other tail you might have included in my North Van list. I am also working on a Top 10 for Squamish but need to ride a couple more trails to verify it’s all inclusive of their best trails. Squamish has so many great trails! With Whistler the challenge is how many of the downhill park trails to include because there are also so many great valley trails that very few ride anymore. One of these days I’ve got to get to Silverstar, but Revelatoke and Nelson are awesome as well! Thanks for watching!!

      @@ronsanderson99 Other than missing Cypress, your list has a pretty good mix of trails but not all black and double black trails are equally difficult. Lady's is one of my favorite trails as well but I have always found it difficult to compare mountain to mountain/trail to trail, just by their trail rating. I look forward to your Squamish list! 🙂

      I purposely left cypress out of my North Vancouver only Top 10 because I don’t think I’ve ridden enough trails on Cypress to evaluate a list. When I create my Top 10 lists, it’s not just a feel but rather based upon ranking the flow, technical, scenic and attribute variety characteristics of each of the over 1,500 trails I’ve ridden. It’s not just a matter of how popular or how hard the trails are but the sum of these characteristics compared to other trails - but the technical element has a minor tendency to select harder than easier trails. I’ve also made Top 10 lists for my favourite US destinations in Moab, Sedona and Hurricane/St. George’s. As I sufficiently cover other trail regions I am hoping to create more Top 10 lists. Thanks for riding along!

    There's no shame in using the go-arounds at our age Ron. I, too, like to get some air on the smaller jumps but the thought of flying 10+ feet over a gap is terrifying.

    WIth all of the grooming they have done to dumb the trail down to placate Metro this trail is no longer a black.

    • @ronsanderson99
      @ronsanderson99 Месяц назад

      Maybe…but it’s harder than Expresso, Floppy Bunny or Kirkford - which are all black. So if you are going to re-rank Cambodia, then you’ve got to look at them all. But Cambodia is no longer the rough, janky original trail it once was.
