Your Best Lawn
Австралия
Добавлен 1 июн 2017
I want to encourage people who don't have all the knowledge or all the tools, like myself, to get out into the garden and get stuck into the lawn. In today's society with modern cameras and filters, it's easy to hide things or make something appear to be better than it is. That can make it seem perfect and thus impossible for the average Joe to achieve. Don't worry about what the other guy is doing up the road, don't worry about what the Instagram lawns look like with their filters and colour adjustments. Just focus on learning something new and enjoying your time outside in the garden. Don't feel discouraged. Be encouraged, be helpful, be kind. Just do your best.
Follow my journey of turning this unloved "lawn" into something to be proud of, with the ultimate goal of reel/cylinder mowing as short as the dogs allow.
I'm learning what works and making mistakes along the way.
Get out there and DO YOUR BEST.

When you don't look after your lawn for a while
So I've been pretty busy lately, new baby in the house and a bunch of other things keeping me occupied. The lawn has been put on the back burner and only had 2 mows in about 5 weeks. Lets give it a clean up today and see what it looks like.
Some exciting new things happening in the future, stick around and join in.
My apologies for the serious lack on content, BUT, it is important to take care of other things sometimes and hobbies take a back seat at times.
Thanks for watching.

Grooming Reel on Couch Grass to Reduce Thatch + a Slight Scalp
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.2 года назад
Time to pull some thatch out of the lawn using the groomer. It basically just pulled at the lawn above the soil layer and grabs any dead material building up in that area. A double pass followed by a light scalp and a good feed of fertiliser should see this lawn looking green again in no time. In recent mows I could feel the mower starting to "float" or "drift" when trying to go in a straight l...
No mowing for 12 days after PGR (Plant Growth Regulator) - No Worries
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 года назад
I applied a very low rate of PGR (Plant Growth Regulator - Trinexapac-Ethyl) and then went away for a week or so. It dramatically reduced the seed heads being produced, at a guess I'd say by 80%, and the leaf growth was minimal. Usually after 12 days without a mow it would have scalped and taken 4 or 5 big catchers of grass off. I only just filled 1 catcher this time. So, safe to say that PGR i...
Double Cut Diamonds at 10mm // Santa Ana Couch Grass (Bermuda Grass)
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.3 года назад
With lots of rain and warm humid weather, the lawn is growing like crazy! It has nearly filled in from the rye damage and regular mowing like this like help to promote lateral growth. I snuck in a hit of PGR (Plant Growth Regulator the night before this mow) to try and slow it down a bit. It will need a groom soon as I can feel the mower floating a bit on the diagonal cut. It hasn't had the bes...
CORE AERATION on clay areas in the lawn - What else is under the soil?
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
Today I'm using my modified hand core aerator to try and sort out the soil compaction issues that continue in this lawn. Turns out there is more than just clay under the soil. Plus I think I finally realised why there is so much clay randomly placed around the lawn. Hand coring is sweaty work in the humidity, but doesn't take too long and it is a good opportunity to see what is in the soil. The...

Nearly finished with the rye damage and looking forward to the next few months. As always, THANK YOU ALL for watching. Look after YOURSELF Look after EACH OTHER Look after YOUR LAWN! Couch (bermuda) at 8mm - recovering with the help of the PLUGGER
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.3 года назад
No good deed goes unpunished. My successful ryegrass oversow is still kicking the couch around. BUT, thanks to a viewer I believe there is a reason for it....allelopathy. Basically the ryegrass releases chemicals as it grows that inhibit the growth of other plants around it in an effort to survive. Resulting in the couch growing poorly. We need to wait for those chemicals to "wear off" and the ...
Ryegrass damage to couch / Bermuda grass -- time to FIX it
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 года назад
So, the learning continues with my ryegrass overseed project. Now I'm dealing with the effects of having thick healthy ryegrass growth and not timing my transition back to couch grass correctly. Today we look at how thick ryegrass grows and what damage it does to a warm season grass in the correct conditions. A good learning experience (even if it means I have a dodgy looking lawn for a few mor...
Backlapping the reel mower and a CHARITY mow // terrible quality....my bad
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
First of all, my apologies for the video quality on this one. Something went very wrong and I wasn't paying attention to the settings as I filmed. Either way, the reel is now a little bit cleaner and is still cutting paper, despite mowing over a rock the other day....whoops. Scalped lawn always takes a while to get going again, but when it gets going properly it goes very green very quickly. Ne...
Height reset to 8mm on the couch // getting ready for a great season
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.3 года назад
I'm now on Instagram - your_best_lawn Back onto the lawn today, this time with the cylinder mower. After eyeballing my desired height it turned out to be about 8mm. Probably a little bit more than that as the Scott Bonnar isn't too heavy and floats a bit on the surface. Heaps of clippings, a decent amount of sand, and goodbye to the nice dark green lawn. BUT, all will be fine in a week or so wh...
Long overdue mow after the reno // can't kill ryegrass?
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 года назад
I wasn't home and not in a position to mow the lawn for a long time after I did my renovation and it got a little long. Plenty of Ryegrass came back after being cut to the dirt, but the lawn is looking like it will go well this year. A fair bit of sand came up this mow, but I should have the reel mower back on here shortly and can start chasing that illusive 'perfect' lawn!! Thanks again for wa...
Another lawn renovation - chasing levels and dogs chasing mowers
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.3 года назад
#YBL - It's that time of the year again, when we mow down our lawns to dirt and then pile sand on top. Not something that needs to be repeated every single year, but when you are trying to get the lawn as flat as possible it may take a few years when starting with an existing area that is nowhere near level. This is the 2nd major renovation this lawn has had and it's 3rd topdress. Thanks for wa...

Super Scalper Build - new engine for old slasher frame
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.3 года назад
#ybl - After seeing Brenton's (The Aussie Lawn) scalping machine I obviously needed one. Needed! I tried to buy a few second hand but they aren't too common up here. I scored this one with 2 other slashers for $60. I immediately went down the rabbit hole on the Briggs Engine website and ended up with a 5.5HP cast iron bore 4 stroke. A bit of cutting and welding and she was ready for use. It wil...

Using GYPSUM to fix dry spots in the lawn - Success!!
holy crap that is brilliant
“Core samples”, wow, we really are becoming scientists over here with our lawn care hobbies. 😊
How do you get the plugs to come out? Mine gets compacted and you have to dig the plugs out. Very annoying
What backlapping paste do you use? I see there's various grits being offered, is it a matter of starting from coarse down to the finer grits or just buy one grit and stick with it?
Awesome video mate Have a question What’s your maintenance like for the Santa Ana in winter? How often you cut it and what nights you running? Cheers 👍🏽
Do you always water in after your mix of plant doctor? Do you do it straight away of wait a few hours so it stays on the leaf first?
I sampled my lawn for a ph test, and my water was like a chocolate thikshake and did not clear at all lol. Also was a ph of 4.8 so doing dolomite lime and gypsum coming into winter to help rehabilitate my lawn by the time spring comes back.
I though and understood you mow it short first, no?
Yes mow short before scarifying
How much did the Scott Bonner cost you?
I paid $200 about 8 years ago
Is 20mm too high for Santa Ana?
Just stumbled on your channel mate. Just also noticed you haven’t uploaded any content in a while. Everything okay? I’m really enjoying your videos mate. Awesome advice. 💯👊
No shit. I use to watch him all the time. Where he go ahaha
Hey mate, yes I have unfortunately stopped filming for now. I have moved house 3 times in the last 2 years and haven't had any lawn to care for. I have a big project in the works but still a ways off. Appreciate your thoughts 🙏
with groomers how do you set the height?. Do you just have it just sitting on the top of the leaf ?
Hey mate, sorry for the late reply. Yes you basically just run the blades at Max height, then slowly lower it until you start to see it touching. You'll notice the league getting thrown up. Then just decide how hard you want to go. Not a specific as the reel
Sweet thanks just picked one a groomer blade so im keen to try it this season. looking forward to see more videos off you @@YourBestLawn
Hope all’s well. Miss seeing this lawn 🥺
Hey mate, I'm all good. Have unfortunately moved house 3 times in recent times and have no lawn!! I'll be back though. 8 acres of paradise purchased but working away currently
Mate are they cells in your back lawn? Lol thanks for the helpful videos 👍🏻
Yeah mate they were the old town cells back in the day apparently
@@YourBestLawn that’s pretty cool Do you have access too them? Not everyone can say that have them in there back yard lol
yeah mate I kept the mowers and fertilisers in there!! have moved house since so hopefully the next person is looking after it all
What are these made for ? Just wondering
Did you end up needing to do anything with the Couch coming through and subsequently going dormant? I've just oversowed my couch with Rye for the first time and can see both rye germination as well as the couch continuing to grow (despite me smashing it with PGR a few weeks ago). Only been a week so far though so no idea what my results will be like yet.
Yep the couch definitely started to grow and recover before going dormant. I wouldn't be too worried as the rye grows very aggressively and a single rye plant will grow as big as a tennis ball no worries. it will just grow over the couch and you won't see it mate. I was very surprised at how tough it was and actually should have tried to kill it way sooner
@@YourBestLawn Cheers mate. Good to know. Just need to apply a bit of patience and stop watching it grow. LOL. What did you go with when it came time to spray it out? Monument? Tribute? Something else?
@Craig Monty mate I was watching it everyday too haha. it comes on strong after a few mows and loves a feed. Yep I definitely didn't spray monument :-)
@@YourBestLawn Cheers mate. Definitely won't be using monument either.😉 ;)
good idea that
GDay mate - just came across the channel as thinking about doing a rye oversow on my couch this season as well (i'm in Sydney so still too hot at the moment). Just wondering when you put the seed down and what the temps were like where you are at that time?
hey mate. Temps were mid to high 20s with the off day in thr 30s. Once established the rye is pretty tough. don't be afraid to go early and just give it extra water if a hit day comes
@@YourBestLawn Cheers - we had a day at 38 last week so at the moment the TifTuf is absolutely loving life. Which makes it hard ot pull the trigger to shut it down and oversow. Hopefully will be worth it come July when im still mowing though. :)
It's a tough call mate but you are right about the winter mowing. It was great to look out the back and see nice green lawn. Just make sure you start killing the rye early, or you'll run into the allelopathic issues and the couch won't grow
Yo mate …….. missing your regular vids…… really hope you are going ok. Give us a thumbs up if / when ur able
Hey mate. Still here. doing good. Nearly back on track
@@YourBestLawn Hope to see you back in full swing mate. Chin up!
Stupid question, I suspect, but what happens with the rye grass when the weather warms up? That rye looks sensational.
In theory it will die out mostly when it's hot. But rye actually release an organic compound that stops the Santa Ana from growing. so you end up with big dead patches. Need to spray the rye with a herbicide to kill it about 2 months before the Santa Ana wakes up
@Your Best Lawn And then start the process again next winter? Might not bother then 😂 I'm building now and plan on Santa Ana or Nullarbor couch, which i believe is basically the same species of turf.
Yeah mate from my experience it was a lot of work. But with proper timing and the right equipment it would be a bit easier the 2nd time around. I'm currently trying to decide between turf varieties for our next place and not 100% sure yet Too many options
When u back dude miss the vids 👍
I'm working on it mate!! Been a journey so far but I will be back. cheers for the comment 👍
Haven’t seen the whole video but you might as well build the handle with the square tubing and make that thing really strong!!!!
I step on the bar rather than under it. I'm about to replace the tines on my grey cyclone. Thanks for the video

Hey, i know this is a year old video - I have santa anna couch in SA, I was wondering if you could list all the products you used, would heaps appreciate it ❤️ grass looks amazing!
Hey mate. There's been a few random products on the lawn to get here but mainly. Spartan - pre emergent herbicide / Ravage - broadleaf herbicide / Cocky 200 - beetle killer / Seasol or equivalent / Any slow release granular fertiliser like Trogan from LawnHub Best thing you can do it mow the lawn regularly. All the best mate and enjoy the lawn
Nothing but the best for you and the family, in the end it really is just a lawn. Take care champ, reach out into the community and lean on those who are willing to help.
Thanks mate 👍 will do
Hey Chief, I hope all is well in your world. Peter
Doing alright mate. had to put things on the back burner for a while but I'll be back
Gday. Just wondering what you sprayed the ryegrass with to kill it off without harming the couch
hey mate. I definitely didn't spray monument by syngenta because that isn't registered for use in a home lawn :-) Have a read of the label though. Very effective.
@@YourBestLawn 🤣. Cheers . So socks n crocs for ppe it is then
the socks are the barrier so no issues haha
Hey mate got more videos in the pipeline? Miss ya
Hey mate. I will be back. just taking longer than I planned. a few speed humps!!!
Can you scarify the couch in March and load up on Rye overseed?
yeah mate definitely 👍
What is the shed, its like an old jail cell? Is your place the old cop shop?
certainly is mate, they are the old town cells. 😀
Mate I was just thinking " I wonder where that guy with the kelpie videos are at?" And here you are...
Any new vids coming up soon or are you having a winter break?
Hey mate. I'm still here, just had a bunch of stuff thrown at me and had to take a step back. 100% will be back. Bigger and better 🍺 🍻

@@YourBestLawn Let's go!
Miss your vids man! Hopefully you'll get back into it soon. 🤞
Thanks mate, I'll be back into it soon. Literally just fixed my computer and downloading everything again 👍
Glad to hear! Lawn dormancy works against all the RUclipsrs whos channels revolve around lawn care. Especially when we want to be inside and watching the idiot box in the warmth.
certainly the case mate! I've got some cool things coming, just need to get myself organised
Just had 100mm of rain up here in Qld,nice and soggy then the auspost courier runs his van across the front tiftuf .
ahh bugger mate! the rain only just started here. wouldn't mind 100mm!!
Cheers!
Looks sensational! Very envious of the minimal scalping after so little mowing! My cooch chunks like a mf’r if I leave it too long
thanks mate. it's been growing really slowly this year, I guess that's lucky given how lazy I've been haha 😄
Hi mate how long to get established again? And when you do overseed?
Hey mate, the rye usually germinates in 3-10 days depending on temperature. You can start mowing in a couple of weeks after germination but be gentle. When you do it usually depends on temperature, but about now is good. Warm enough to get it going, but not hot enough to kill it. Lots of people are seeding now mate, get stuck into it
Cheers mate. Hope get seeds quickly
EZ flow rocks! Turf looking good 😊
Super handy tool to have that's for sure!! Thanks mate
Mate sometimes i think the turf enjoys a bit of a break from us constantly doing stuff to it. New bubs here too but the lawn is looking mint!
I think you're right mate, good to have a break. Congrats on the little one, hang tough 💪
Love the crocs oh and the lawn is looking good
thanks mate 👍 Crocs are the go for sure
Good to see u back nicko 👍 take care of ur self, also mate how much mls of product do u put in the Ezyflow before filling with water 💧
good to be back man 👍 I'm pretty loose with the EzFlo that plastic jug u have measures up to 3000ml so I usually just mix everything up in there beforehand then dump it in. Then add a bit more water to the jug and pour it in until liquid is flowing out the top. Some stuff foams up heaps and you need to waste a bit making sure there isn't a big air gap in the top of the unit.
Bro, you do you. My mental health spiraled down dramatically when I was focusing too much on my lawn instead of me and my family so have shifted my focus and I am still here today because of it. Congrats on the baby.
Thanks dude. I'm glad you were able to see it and caught it in time. They are just hobbies at the end of the day and are meant to provide a release, not a burden. Stay safe mate 👍
Congratulations! Also but brave wearing those shorts after the weekend. Croc on 👶🐊
