No mowing for 12 days after PGR (Plant Growth Regulator) - No Worries

  • I applied a very low rate of PGR (Plant Growth Regulator - Trinexapac-Ethyl) and then went away for a week or so. It dramatically reduced the seed heads being produced, at a guess I'd say by 80%, and the leaf growth was minimal. Usually after 12 days without a mow it would have scalped and taken 4 or 5 big catchers of grass off. I only just filled 1 catcher this time. So, safe to say that PGR is a neat little tool to have.
    Not surprisingly, the best looking part of the lawn is the lower section, that is just being cut with a Masport Rotary Mower. It looks great and holds colour much better than the shorter cut area. The short area needs a lot of love to hold that colour compared to the longer section.
    Thanks again for watching. Take it easy and look after yourself :)

    Looking good mate. How often are you doing the PGR? And whats the cut height on the cylinder?
    Also a video of the groomer in action would be nice.

    • @YourBestLawn

      thanks mate, this was the first application of PGR, given the lawn was being inhibited by the ryegrass it only just started growing. It will be due again in a week or so. It's being cut at 11mm at the moment, needs some food and iron to help with colour.
      The groomer will.be in the nest video, very handy little tool to have, saves having to scalp it back

    Great video and great looking lawn. I'd give.you two thumbs up if I could just for saying a rotary give a neat looking lawn too. A few Vids back I told you about the inhibitor that rye releases. How's the couch in those areas now?

      ah mate, you're an absolute life saver! If I didn't know about the ryegrass inhibiting growth I would have had a very hard season. Knowing I just needed to ride it out was very helpful. I'm sure you can see there are still a few spots where it is filling in, and the PGR has slowed that a bit, but they are all well and truly growing again.
      A massive thank you for passing on your knowledge mate. Very helpful 👌

      @@YourBestLawn mate, anytime, glad to help. That's great they are filling a bit, even slowly. To be honest they didn't stand out too much so yeah it's looking great.

    Yo, I wonder what if is that causes seed heads, I've seen plenty of guys complaining about tiff turf seed head.
    I wonder once thier lawns get older and better tootzones if it'll stop throwing the seed heads up.
    My qld blue couch doesn't seem to throw up much seed head.

    • @YourBestLawn
      @YourBestLawn  3 года назад

      I think certain grass types throw seed heads for many different reason, I have heard that Tiftuf will do it if it has too much fertiliser and others say stress or lacking nutrients. it's probably just a matter of working out what your specific patch needs. I would definitely be getting a soil test if I intended to stay here long term, I think that would solve a lot of them.

    Where's a good place in SA to get soil tested mate?

    • @YourBestLawn
      @YourBestLawn  3 года назад +2

      Hey mate, I haven't specifically looked but I know from the Australian Lawn Fanatics Facebook page that a member Michelle Dickinson does awesome testing at great rates. I'd be going there, just post it off 👍

      @@YourBestLawn yeah I do the same with my rover rotary mower. Its a good height for once a week mowing and no pgr either. My lawns are a work in progress like my SB. But I'm in your boat. Inheriting a rental property lawn that's had zero love before me. Its good fun for the soul though. Going to look at getting more tif tuf for the back lawn next year. Plenty of people going with tif tuf now so I can take their leftovers lol.
