Strapless foiling 2: learning to fly on efoil
My next training on the same efoil board Fliteair, on gear 4. It’s called ‘touch and go’ for good reasons, as the most difficult flying part is to press the rising foil back into water. Flying foil can easily breach the water surface, resulting in a spectacular crash over the board nose due to an abrupt speed loss. Finding the sweet spot on a board to firmly stand, while anticipating and applying small corrections by weight shifts, is a new skill and takes a lot of practicing. Arne filmed me to show how it actually went, falling included. However, my falls were safe, as I always jumped preventively rather than kept struggling to regain control. And in no time, I could stand up and fly aga...

Strapless foiling 1: entry lesson on efoil
Просмотров 414 часа назад
I looked up a few videos on the very first steps in kitefoiling, and it was quite upsetting to find out how experienced kiters constantly crash during a waterstart or attempting to fly. It’s like to start all over again from zero, whether strapped or not. So, back to lessons and without a kite, for safety’s sake. Here is my first time on an efoil Fliteair, on a lake in Waasmunster. My coach Arn...
Strapless kitesurfing 10: first time on a wave surfboard in 20+knots
Просмотров 151День назад
A brief but intense session started under sun and interrupted by a sudden thunderstorm, which came instead of expected light showers. I was on a Cabrinha Xbreed thruster (4 cm tail rocker), shaped for wave riding rather than a relaxed cruising. I tried both an extra kite steering and board edging but struggled to ride upwind during my very short runs next to the launch spot, as the wind was alm...
Strapless kitesurfing 9: practicing one-handed steering and narrow grip
Просмотров 2521 день назад
According to ‘Windfinder’, it was the last windy weekend in August, also a favorable low-tide timing. At noon, it was enough power for a 9m kite (17-18 knots) but wind started to fade away 2h later. I wanted to practice 1-handed kite steering despite that the shallow waters were crowded by beginners, like me. Hence, I needed to hold myself back and stop on time in order to respect safety. Yet, ...
Strapless kitesurfing 8: first attempts of one-handed kite steering
Просмотров 24Месяц назад
I took a 11 m kite for predicted light winds (13-15 knots) but wind suddenly picked up till 16-19 knots and I got quite overpowered. Despite the rising chop, decided to proceed with a 1-handed steering, while use both hands for a kite correction. Riding cross-wind went well but going upwind was not that successful in shot runs, and I was too much focused on kite instead of looking ahead. It app...
Strapless kitesurfing 7: improving kite control and board balance
Просмотров 36Месяц назад
A relaxed session on a 9m kite, just enough powered in 15-20 knot winds. A long walk to deeper outside waters, based on my previous risky experience in the nearby lagoon, too shallow for a directional quad. Still a bit of struggle to keep a balance but both waterstarting and kite/board control is improving, and I don’t miss the straps anymore. Quite the opposite, it feels more safe to avoid the...
Strapless kitesurfing 6: risky session in shallow waters
Просмотров 2432 месяца назад
I did not pay enough attention to low water stands and ended up in a fast draining lagoon between the rising sand banks. I should listen to my coach Mark who kindly came to warrant me and suggested to move to the deeper outside. But it was a very long way upwind to drag both the kite and board. Besides, I saw many kiters happily riding on twintips in shallow waters, and decided to stay for a li...
Strapless kitesurfing 5: a single-fin DJY board in marginal winds
Просмотров 852 месяца назад
From my windsurfing background I knew that (i) single-fin, (ii) flat/fast rocker and (iii) large volume make riding easier in light winds, which prevail in South Holland during June-August. So, instead of buying a large multi-fin directional board, like North Nugget, I opted for “Do-It-Yourself”. I cut off the rear (163 cm) piece from an old wave board RRD Cult 48 (248 cm long), rounded the nos...
Strapless kitesurfing 4: improving waterstarts in light winds
Просмотров 193 месяца назад
My last 'supervised' session to improve the strapless waterstarts, before moving to fully independent kiting. Wind was progressively dropping from 15 to 10-11 knots over 2 h, too little for my biggest 11m kite. A few folks on water on 12-15 m kites, little if any blasting and actions. The most important thing I’ve learned is that a quick waterstart is the best way to limit the downwind drift an...
Strapless kitesurfing 3: light-wind session on a modified RRD Passion
Просмотров 243 месяца назад
My next ‘supervised’ session in 11-15 knots on the 2013 RRD passion 11m, after the drastic shortening of its bridle system. An idea was to reduce the risk of bridle tangling around the wing tips after the kite fall on water, a frequent event for beginners. This outdated delta-type kite has a 5 m long bridle, 6 pulleys and the long V-connection between the steer and power lines. I was not sure h...
Strapless kitesurfing 2: first controlled waterstarts and rides

A ‘supervised’ session on the strapless 4’10 Slingshot quad Gnarwhal. This board, shaped for wakesurfing, appeared to be very light (3 kg), and looked quite fragile for kiting. So, I re-enforced it with carbon and extra thick pads, also placed the back handle to carry. The flat (rocker line) and wide/floaty (53 cm/20L) Gnarwhal was stable and accelerated well on a 9m kite in variable 13-17 knot...
Strapless kitesurfing 1: hard start with the front foot hook
Просмотров 425 месяцев назад
Removing the front strap was a game changer… making a board control so hard. An open half-hook didn’t help much, yet gave a mark where the front foot should be placed. I kept looking at the feet position and losing an overall kite control, followed by immediate wipe-outs. Luckily, no injuries as feet are not locked by straps, and no body dragging was needed - a surfboard drifts straight downwin...
Kite lesson 11 at Oesterdam, December 2023.

A surprise lesson organized by Mark Gorter (“Kitesurfingzeeland”) to introduce a directional board. After a twintip, waterstarting on the cabrinha X-Breed 5’5 was not a big deal, although the very first step to place/keep the back foot on the board deck was tricky since the rear footstrap has been removed. I was learning waterstarts with an 8 m Naish Boxer, underpowered for safety reasons, and ...
Kite lessons 2-7, summer 2023.

Here is a series of lessons with “Kitesurfingzeeland”, organized by Mark Gorter and his instructors Douwe, Robbie, Joost, Mbuzi and Marc (in the order of appearance) in Zeeland, South Holland. In the beginning, I was more concerned about a safety rather than progress, considering my strong surviving reflex from 20 years of windsurfing - to hang deadly on the boom once facing the crash ! This wa...

Nice movies, maybe you can try switching the camera upside down so you are not obstructed by the boom much like what I have watch?v=DLSePJ-4hLM. I have an FXR 105 and love it, great boards. Love the duck jibes!

By the way your are sailing I would say it was a good decision. Very consistent on the duck, tack and jibes. Next fwd loop, but you will need to get some waves.
