The Optimistic Adventurer
Великобритания
Добавлен 25 апр 2013
My name is Dom, I do kit reviews & UK based mini adventures.
I am a Father of four (one recently deceased June 2021) who loves being outside.
Wild Camping, walks, sup paddle boarding, snorkelling, short hikes and visiting 🇬🇧 hidden gems.
When I'm not working (Safeguarding Lead in a Primary School) or looking after my 3 girls, I'm out doing something awesome with awesome people or just going it alone while I work through my grief as healthily as I can.
I started this channel to record for myself and my family but my late son asked me to turn it into a 'real' channel and try and make it big. Soon after he helped me set it up, he suddenly died (aged 17) & it’s been a real comfort to me watching the channel grow and knowing that he set me on this path of adventure, it gets me outside doing healthy things & meeting awesome people. If you'd like to subscribe then that's great.
I'm open to doing collaboration videos with similar channels, send me a message.

Extreme Paddleboarding on Dart River!
Brilliant video... I've just messaged you on Instagram as this is the place I've been looking at on Google maps !
Glad I could help!
Get in the cold water for 5 to 15 minutes every day after the walk. The difference this will make to the joints and muscles is unreal
Great advice, some of our camp spots didn’t have any pools nearby but I’m doing the 640m SWCP this year and will definitely be doing this tip on that. Thanks for stopping by my channel.
about three days ago, I was in the field behind my house and sometimes they have cows there. We hadn’t seen them for like super long so we tried to feed them little. Did we know after we fed them? We started walking the other way and they were following us they put their horns down and we’re ready to charge at us. My friend had to drop the basketand we had to sprint back.
This is beautiful mate. May I ask what sort of area in the dart this is please. Looking to paddle down there a lot more this year. Thanks! Elliott
Send me a message on Insta mate. Don’t want to make this area too well known.
€400 😱😱😱
@@letsfixit1594 yeah I know but you get £40 off using the code OPTIMIST10
Would love to get this but for some ridiculous reason here in Australia ya have to get kayaks registered etc if ya have an y kind of motor even electrical:(
That sucks! But…You get better weather than us and have cooler animals, it’s not all bad brother!
Swedish torch style. The one in the video is to fake looking.
I’ve used quite a few now and this one wasn’t anywhere near the best. Some smaller logs but with better cuts lasted over twice as long.
can someone in the lansing area sell raw swedish logs ready to go with the split in the middle. This would be incredibly cool. No strings added . Sell it like raw wood from oout the forest! please.
Get some tools and be the “someone”, it’s a great idea. I hate the staples and shit they put in them, no need. In fact I’m going to do a video on how to make them, with carry handle but no staples and chemical fuels. Raw is best. Thanks for the inspiration.
looks like a good bit of kit. I'll definitely be getting a kayak motor soon. I wonder how robust it would be if it for instance hit some boulders under the water as you were going along? On rivers, I often times will catch my skeg of the bed of the river, sometimes soft but sometimes peddles or even rocks. The other motor I was looking at is the ePropulsion Vaquita which has more power but is £300 more expensive. These motors do look worth, the main downside is the need to be more careful in shallower water.
Keep watching! I am bound to hit something soon 😂🤣thanks for commenting, let me know your findings in f you get one. You UK or US?
@ I’m from the UK. I went for a paddle with a guy who had a Vaquita last year, he said it’s tethered to the kayak so if it knocks out the slot then it won’t get lost. Presume the Hiqmar would be the same? The Vaquita was impressive but the Hiqmar looks better value tbh.
Loving the content Dom, keep it coming!! 🙌
@@highamsimon Thank you, lots more coming.
Great photography.
@@lisalowy2443 that’s very kind, thank you. We’ve been back a few times now and it never disappoints. Have you been?
I’ve been waiting for someone to start selling something like this for a while now. I won’t be buying yet as just sunk a load of cash on my new kayak but be interesting to see how they develop over the next year. If you need someone to hold the camera whilst you try not to fall in with 3 of these on a paddle board let me know.
Cheers for the offer. What kayak did you get?
@ Sandbanks Optimal, collecting in March.
Looks an awesome bit of kit. Surprised how powerful it looks 👍
Yes, quite pokey for a little prop. Lots of fun.
Fantastic weather and great location with flat water, when we catch up I’ll also bring my Razor X1 dropstitch which is only 28” wide and quite nippy over water Thankyou very much for the mention as well Dom
Excellent reviewer, one of the best I have seen
Wow, thanks! 🙏 I’m currently editing a really cool trolling motor/e fin, will be live tomorrow, come take a look. Thanks so much, made my night.
It’s live on my channel. It’s for a sup motor.
You meant to say the most pointless video ever
To me she is majestic! My little angel. Sorry to have wasted 18 seconds of your life but thanks for the comment.
I support your comment
@@knut-arnegulbrandsen5686 I support you, have a great day.
@@TheOptimisticAdventurer people are tired of wrong information and waiting for THAT to happen her ein youtube. That is why you get these comments. If you would show in the start a good hint it was about your dog people would react different. Just a tip ✌🏻
@ was just a bit of fun to fill some time. Thanks for the feedback though.
I have the vaquita e-propulsion and it's absolutely super...😁👍🏴🇬🇧
Pleased to hear it! Thanks he run time on this thing is insane, he tried my best to flatten it yesterday, hitting headwinds, full speed flat out for a mile, lots to f position changes for fishing. I’m editing the long format video now. You UK? Be good to do a side by side endurance test on both machines.
I'm based in Northern Ireland....yes the range on this is around 35-40 km at lowest setting and it can go at a fair old speed in top speed. I will have a look at stats and get back to you but as you say whether on the sup or kayak it makes a huge difference 👍😁🏴🇬🇧
I preferred it on the kayak. Need to get my SUP legs back on form after a year off due to a broken shoulder. Stay in touch.
@@TheOptimisticAdventurer Yes once setup is sorted with the straps on kayak it's great....on another subject have you tried e-foiling yet ..that's the way forward it's beyond fantastic. I'm out with the lads as often as possible. Take care hope the leg gets better soon happy new year 😁👍🏴🇬🇧
what size did you use l or m, thanks

Great video, considering an inflatable at the moment after selling my sit on which I wasn’t using due to it being a faff. Also nice to see some familiar sites - just found this channel so have subscribed. Recently moved to the area so will use you to find new places to visit! Cheers.
Thanks for the comment. I have a playlist on locations locally and one on kit, lots of inflatable kayaks in there for different budgets. I watched one of your vids, do you know about R/C yachts? I have my late sons and I’m sure the rigging is wrong, I’d love to get it going again.
How fecking beautiful!!
It was awesome mate! I’d love to meet him again. Thanks for stopping by.
How have I only just seen this, you went very Clarkson at the start
This is one of my least watched but favourite videos!
Such a good turnout 👍
@@sarahwhittingham6737 absolute fantastic, such a great crowd too. Did you dip/swim?
Absolutely….not 😂 I’m a summer sea swimmer. Happy to paddleboard in the winter with a plan to not fall in 👍
Fancy testing out a new paddleboard E-fin and being in a video? I’m assuming you’re local to Devon?
@@TheOptimisticAdventurer hey, that would have been awesome however I’m currently out of action with a pulled back 😣 dosed up on deep heat as we speak! Thank you for asking though!
Brilliant
@@NickIrlam-gh9hp see you tomorrow buddy.
My wife would kill me if we was sleeping together in that one. So I have to go on my own 😂 Would love it 😊

Great concept for a whw video. So helpful to get tips and advice from ppl who have done it. Thank you 🙏🏾
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment too.
Hi, I sleep on a matress in my zafira when I’m working away. Too tight to pay for a hotel. I think you’ve just inspired me to notch it up a level!!
Go for it, it’ll be worth it and you’ll be so much more comfortable.
Hi Dom. I know a lady from Liskeard that is in the GB ice swimming team in Italy next year. Shes got bags of enthusiasm and a natural behind a mic. If you dm me ill pass in her details. 👍
Please remind me after Xmas.
Sorry, hit go before finishing. Remind me after Xmas, she sounds awesome.
12:08 - have you ever managed to remove the rear seat posts that poke out. Finding myself nursing bruises because of them!
Nope! They get me occasionally too. Our engine is sadly coming to an end, shame as the body and such is still n great order.
@@TheOptimisticAdventurer Had a few probs with my Zaffy too and the rest is in great condition. I'm keeping her going as long as I can. What's the issue?
@allieandmaria ultra low power, great on the motorways but when I hit a hill or traffic lights she all but stops. 1st gear up even small hills.
@@TheOptimisticAdventurer Any error codes/check engine light?
@allieandmaria it’s a gonna, two garages have said “new engine” needed. I’m going to scrap her and figure out an upgrade. It’ll work out fine.
Very nice video, I just bought this. One remark: I think there was water coming in from you two wrists as I think you didn't tie the two velcro bands over your wrists. As you came out of the water you can see the two arms where showing the water coming from your wrists not from the top. I might be wrong but does it still feel good now? Thank you for making this video.
@@UilKerk still working, I’ll be out in it next weekend filming a new kayak motor for the channel.
Also, the gaskets on the sleeves don’t require the Velcro to work. They work on their tightness. For the money it’s a great suit.
"Dont underestimate how the long walk yesterday will affect the walk today". Appreciate this advice!!
@@helenburns2186 it’s easy to judge that we can do 13, 20 miles each day as a one off, the culminating fatigue definitely plays a part in multi day hikes. Have you seen the long format video on this hike on my page?
@TheOptimisticAdventurer no! Im heading over to check it out now, thanks! Long form version would be so helpful!
Is the condensation that bad? I’m thinking about getting a different type of bivy than the one you used and it still has a lot of condensation. Will it really get everything wet inside and does it also make it have a higher chance of getting mould? Just asking as I am not sure if I should get one which does have a lot of condensation. Nice video by the way 👍
I’m a big lad so that limits the airflow. The bag is very good, I’ve used it 4 or 5 times now and it’s warm and dry. Any shelter that has poor air flow will get condensation from breath and sweat. Thank for stopping by my channel.
It work some times buddy
Was a great experience.
Late to the party but you are supposed to leave a small gap (4-5inches) vs completely zipping up the bivy bag. Most have an overflap to prevent rain from coming into that gap but it prevents condensation from you breathing inside. hope this helps
All party guests welcome here! Good advice. I’ll test it out soon.
A deuce-nip lol
Amazing Dom, keep up the explorations and videos, love to watch them. 😊
Thanks buddy. Got a new toy arriving this week. Will film the 1st video on it on Saturday. I think you’ll like it.
Sorry the fin on the Hybris
@@StevesOutdoorCameraAdventures0 yeah I figured you meant that one. US box fin.
Dom I watched a few more of your videos tonight and all look brilliant, that fin track will take the Hiqmar e-fin if you ever do rivers or lakes,or sea but wash off after Really good fun👍👍
I’ve got the aquaglide quick release now, love it. Not got the funds yet for an e fin but one day mate.
I’ve just sent them a message to see if they will send me one to review. If not, might have to borrow yours for the day!
No problem I’ll pop down when the weather improves
Where are you based Dom
@@StevesOutdoorCameraAdventures0 East Devon.
Dom a wonderful review on this kayak I have the Deschuts 130 and the Blackfoot 130 not yet tested Those seats look amazing👍
@@StevesOutdoorCameraAdventures0 thank you mate. I really appreciate the comment. I’ve not tried a Deschuts yet but the Blackfoot, what’s boat hey? Love everything about it.
@ hopefully get out in the Blackfoot later in the week and test it out,it cost a bit for all the fittings😂
Money well spent on quality is seldom wasted. (That’s what I tell my wife 😉)
That’s a juvenile. You can tell by the eyes
@@ScarletTiger109 you talking about me or the bird! 🤣😂
@ the bird! Corvids (ravens and crows) have light colored eyes when they are young and slowly darken over time
That’s ace, thank you. I was kidding btw.
hey, I am interested in 130. Could you comfortably stand in this kayak? Thanks
@@Beyondthebite2024 easily, so stable. You’ve made a great choice.

The thing was savage! In the full video you see it trying to get in our car too!

Rick and two crows?
I’m not sure what this means, definitely one crow and I’m called Dom.
I reckon he was thinking "" hmm , is not that high I may actually survive even if ropes break up "" 😂😂😂
@@Claudiu95Rus I definitely wasn’t thinking that! Great memories made this day. You been on it or similar?
Cracking quality tarp for the money, ive got the expedition tarp also pairs nice with the bobcat. Oex make some cracking gear.
