Ride 4 Dementia: Ian Stone's Inspiring Journey to Raise Awareness and Funds
When Ian Stone’s mother was diagnosed with dementia, he couldn't just sit back and do nothing. Many people wonder, "Has my mum got dementia?" or "What do the early signs of dementia look like?" Ian wanted to raise money and, more importantly, awareness for those asking these very questions.
One evening, Ian sat with his mum and shared his idea. “I want to ride for charity, Mum,” Ian said. “But you don't have a bike,” his mum replied. She smiled gently, “You’ll find a way, Ian. You always do.”
Ian slowly watched his mum pass through the early signs of dementia, stages 1 and 2 of this cruel process. This was compounded by the loss of his father in 2020. In June 2022, with four friends, two fellow cyclists, and a support crew, Ride 4 Dementia’s first charity ride set off from Paignton in Devon, heading 800 miles to Bilbao in Spain and raising over £20,000 for Alzheimer's Research UK.
Now in 2024, Ian’s mum is in stage 4 of the illness. He shares what life has been like watching his mum transform, helping others who are also wondering, "What do the early signs of dementia look like?" or "Does my mum have dementia?"
In 2024, Ride 4 Dementia is on the road again, bigger and more determined to spread awareness and raise money. This time, a team of ten is setting off from Paignton in Devon. As the old saying goes, ‘All roads lead to Rome.’ All that stands between this band of brothers and success is 1,300 miles of road, 78,000 ft of elevation, and a ten-day window for completion.
