Comic book hot takes and bad analysis.
Using sound in comics
Berlin by Jason Lutes is a rich and complex comic series based in the Weimar Republic. It's regarded as one of the greatest graphic novels, but I wanted to focus on an overlooked area in it - the sound.

Hello there, so I've always loved the character of mayday parker spidergirl, best legacy character in my opinion, and I recently sat down and started reading her comics in order, and they're great, honestly I'm having a great time with them, really is too bad we haven't had much from her lately, kinda hoping we see a grown up mayday in the third spiderverse film so she gets a bit of exposure 👍
This is why Batman was right in Tower of Babel. He knew what the heroes are really like and what they are truly capable of.
I am at a point where i am constantly checking for a season 3 trailer on Instagram im so lost
This is a nightmare comic. Imagine this comic being a movie in october-november. You see daredevil luke cage foggy and spiderwoman going to go check on prisoners. Electro shows up and breaks them out. They start killing gaurds. This is a good halloween movie
kirkman said he included the scene to show the affects of male victims and to be honestly this is usually what happens a lot of the times the women who do this don't have anything happen to them and a lot of people don't take it seriously
I get that and I like the way Kirkman showed Mark's struggling with it throughout the rest of the series. Just wish the actual event had been handled differently.
My friend, who hates comics and superheroes, preferring manga, watched this cartoon series with great interest. Which says a lot. Personally, the art is too simplistic for me. I like heavy shadows and all that exaggerated hyperbolized things. Some examples looks like from bi-monthly comics. It's not for me, probably. Thank you for the video
Yeah the animated series is cool - lots of great actors doing the voices. That's completely fair enough about the art, can't be for everyone. And thanks for stopping by, good to see you!
really great video! can't wait to see more content from you :]
Cheers for watching and loving the name!
The extended cast is also a lot of fun and get a lot more play in the spin off Guardians of The Globe and Invincible Universe. I’m a big fan of Le Bruiser, the super powered French bull dog and Best Tiger, the Chinese super human marksman who wears a blind fold just to give himself a challenge.
Ah yeah definitely, lots of great characters. I got to the end of this video wondering how I hadn't spoken about Battle Beast, the Immortal or even Thragg really. So many great characters to talk about. I'll definitely try and get round to some of those other series in a future video. Thanks for watching!
Keeping the same creative team more or less definitely helps, and having a single hero story that is then double-downed on by the elimination of the main super team early on focuses the story on Mark. That it actually ends, demonstrates that this is a character rather than an IP just telling variations on the same stories for decades is a plus too.
Well put and thanks for watching!
Thanks for this. I read Watchmen when it was first serialized. Back then, I read evert bit of the black freighter portions. Reading it then, I did have some vague sense that it was making commentary on the story as a whole, but I couldn't pinpoint precisely what though. I have also heard of people who skipped over the text portions of the book too. I couldn't believe that anyone would do this, as the text portions did so much to the world building and added so much more understanding to the characters too,.
That's very cool, would have loved to have experienced it as it was coming out. And yeah, skipping sections, that's something I'll never get either! Thanks for watching!
Underrated video and channel
Cheers for that, means a lot, and thanks for watching!
hes not staring at them hes leaving
great analysis.. subbed
Thank you!
A Next is probably one of my favourite avengers runs they definitely captured the disfunctional but effective energy the original avengers had. With the quality of Marvel right now, MC2 keeps looking better with time
Really cool to know the origim of this panel, and what a crazy history this comic has
Its padding
The support band of the Pale Horse is Krystalnacht, which leads to the "Kristallnacht". Kristallnacht is often taken as the date of the total takeover by the National Socialists in 1938.
This is so cool! Thanks for this! Also its kind of funny that in American comics they make up countries like the South American country of Gonzalia. I wonder if it was in order to not make stuff up of a country, or it was better to just make stuff up of a fictitious country or they just straight up did not bother to research about a country that they were going to mention for a few panels.
Yeah I always enjoy comic book geography. I think creating new countries does give Marvel or DC a bit more freedom in what they can write about them without a). Offending anyone b). Getting into difficult situations with real life politics. Latveria can always be a rogue nation or Namor can destroy Wakanda without upsetting anyone. As far as I know though, Gonzalia was never mentioned in DC comics ever again!
@@TheVault_Comics I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT LATVERIA! I keep forgetting that Dr. Doom was born in this very poor fictitious poor European country.
Nevermind the meme, Superman just giving a powerful belt to a random dude is just odd.
Haha true!
This video was fun to watch! Especially when you went off multiple tangents at the end!
Cheers! And thanks for watching!
That was very good, and hit some things I hadn't noticed. But as to Veidt, I felt that in those couple of lines, he was saying that he actually literally used reading The Black Freighter as a sort of tool for penance, reading it to visualize the lives he was taking as though experiencing his sin would somehow expiate it. But in thinking that would be good enough, he avoids facing the actual message of The Black Freighter.
Could the Black Freighter be a reference to the black freighter mentioned in Three Penny Opera where it's described as bring carnage and revolution?
It started so strong as well but the ending and reveal was just….
Laurie not Sally
Yeah, I'm an idiot!
This caused Batman to create Brother Eye due to being paranoid not trusting anyone.
Am I the only one who thought that everyone was kind of hot in this comic? Yeah it's just me
Each to their own!
@@TheVault_Comics true
I think you nailed it
Cheers mate!
I have to admit that I skip this part when I re-read the story.
This is really good. I've only read it once but I barely picked up on half the details you've mentioned there. 🙂
Cheers! And thanks for stopping by!
No one, should skip any section of Watchmen. Crazy!
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
I can't see that you missed anything. Excellent video. It helped me contextualise the Black Freighter inserts despite reading Watchmen numerous times. Thanks!
That's great and thanks for watching!
Yep, you got it. Veidt, like the crewman, tries to be a hero and ends up causing death and destruction. That also applies to Rorschach and many other characters in the story.
"I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passing by. All my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy." - Van Halen
The Watchmen is such a beautiful, richly told and written comic, I love how the comic with in the comic gives the Watchman another dimension. You could easily loose your self in it and the comic is more then a comic but a short novel that can easily become of our lust for power and how it increasinlyblinds us from our humanity.
It's Ozymandias tormenting himself. He is the guy who loses his mind and becomes what he hates. That is what he fears the most: that he ia horribly wrong and has committed a heinous crime because he thought he was doing the right thing. The pirate story is his nightmares, as he intimates to Doctor Manhattan right before he leaves.
Excellent analysis. I think the only thing you didn't mention was how is another example of watchmen using a storytelling technique that really only works in comics, not in prose or film. Where are two narratives can be happening simultaneously and we are able to both acknowledge and see and recognize that they are simultaneous while being able to take the time to read them separately and process them fully.
To be honest, that's not something I thought of! Interesting idea and I've been scratching my head trying to think of an example from a book/TV/film and can't! Thanks for watching!
That was somthing Frank Miller was doing at the same time as Watchman - he would have two or three narrators talking about the same scene at the same time - and by haveing their captions in different colors and fonts it wasn't confusing at all...
"The mad angry beard masquerading as a man" Accurate. Accurate.
But what is the bucaneer’s sin? Why is he punished? For his blind madness toward a goal he ends up being unable to accomplish
The black freighter parts are not worth reading in my opinion as they are ham handed. They simply waste space and help Moore try and force his political beliefs down peoples throats. He Turned on the fans when he found out we see Rorschach as the hero of the story when in Moore's head the real hero was Ozymandias because he was the one with the courage to end the cycle by killing millions to remake the world Via the Communist method. Hating how the fans saw Rorschach was the real reason for the almost year long delay between issues 7 and 8 when it was being released as single issues. Back before the internet it took several months to get the feedback that creators get the day after release currently. When Moore learned how the fan's felt he stopped writing in disgust and tried to get the project canceled. The black freighter is meant to vilify the masked hero with traditional values as a relic of what Moore considers a worthless past because he is standing in the way of the progressive Ozymandias who is willing to break a few million human eggs to create the omelet of world peace.
I love how the Black Freighter story in chapter 5 is interwoven with the assassination attempt on Ozymandias and the trap laid for Rorschach. The bloated corpses the sailor lashes together to make a raft, along with the people he kills in his madness when he reaches land, parallel the blood on Ozymandias's hands as he tries to prevent greater bloodshed. Issue 5 is incredible all around. I love how that one part shifts between red and green shades with each panel.
I believe the title, "The Black Freighter," is a reference to the refrain of 'Pirate Jenny," from Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera. You can hear his wife Lotte Lenya perform it here on RUclips.
I think the Swamp Thing issue by Moore that didn't get the stamp from the comics authority was one of the first. Didn't think about that with the Black Freighter subject matter.
Watchmen is my favourite comic. I remember reading it for the first time and thinking it was so cool how this very easily ignored subplot directly mirrors and foreshadows the events of the book.
nice analysis - it's highly amusing to consider the intersection of the 'Alan Moore hates comic book fans!' people and the 'i didn't bother reading the bits of Watchmen that didn't involve superheroes going bang bang' people
You either die a buccaneer hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain pirate
The "animated" feature of this is a bit odd and I struggled to see how it would have fit into the movie as it was supposed to. It makes more sense in its original form, of course.
I think it’s perfect. As you said, the way the two stories weave together is beyond clever.
The Inclusion of the black freighter as animated segments in the movie was also quite brilliant, though harder to ponder upon as movie enforces it's pace as a comic or book takes on your pace. Still, it is a great tale to include. It is quintessentially a fleshed out story about "the way to hell is paved with good intentions"
The version I saw didn't have those segments included. I thought they were dropped and became a stand alone dvd. I guess a re-release of Watchmen has put them back together.
