I am a sturgeon
Cuz abed wasnt meant to be autistic coded. He was a self insert for an undiagnosed autistic writer
Samus at the end of the series, in Metroid Dread: I AM A METROID
oh and mentioning House, there’s an episode where he’s playing Metroid Zero Mission on a game boy advance :))
They really did make House but not funny and with a protagonist somehow less likable than House, who is intentionally and in-universe a massive asshole.
I watched most of the first season but f this show. It did start out decent, but it got so unbelievably, the doctor didn’t just have low emotional IQ, he had behavior issues that would have kept him from ever working with patients or even making it through a medical program.
Sheldon ain’t autistic, he just built like that and kinda weird in general
Anything bad you can say about the MCU has absolutely nothing to do with the russos. What? the guys who brought us Winter soldier, infinity war, and endgame? Yeah they have nothing to do with any of marvels perceived problems
I don’t blame Freddie Highmore, he's just an actor doing what he’s told to do by the director. Even if it's not an accurate portrayal of autism specifically, his acting is insanely good.
I did not know we can just switch our specialities like that
I am not autistic, but attention deficit. These kinds of "representation" hurt all of us who are neurodivergent. Im really tired of people talking about lives they have no past in without even having someone from that life guide them. It could've been really fixed by just talking to some autistic people. But some people don't want to hear, recognize, or understand us. They pretend we don't exist or use us as a comparison point - and were never the better ones. Were either so lucky to have "superpowers" (which i find GROSSLY offensive) or we "had to overcome so much." Im only now at 27 starting to unpack all the ableist shit Ive experienced, and I at least come off as "normal." Idk what else to say other than fuck Big Bang Theory.
There is a show that you need to check out and do a video on. The show is called "Touch". It stars Kiefer Sutherland, and David Mazouz. It follows a nonverbal Autistic kid who has the abilities to not only communicate through numbers, but also see patterns through numbers in which, in a way, allows him to predict the future. It ran for 2 seasons, and I was wondering, if you think this show is a correct representation of Autism?
So autistic people are super heros that are very annoying?
I always hated this show
Okabe is Legend.
This show is a slap in the face to autism. It also has terrible writing and acting
It was good for the first 2 seasons, then fell off a cliff.
The Good Doctor taught me that representation is a bad thing.
*BAD representation is a bad thing
@@squiddothekiddo just let the hyperbole be funny.
I'm autistic and I always felt bad for hating the way this disability is portrayed here. Sure, autism is a spectrum and there are PROBABLY a few of us that might be this way, but the majority of autistic people I've met are just awkward and sweet. This portrayal just continues to stigmatize an already stigmatized disability. Big big props to the actor tho. I could probably NOT play that role, I would die from embarassment 😅
credit to Vector, he's actually really smart and i think most of the time he's shown figuring out the true mystery solution before everyone else, including Espio. Espio still does super well but Vector I think is generally the smarter detective even if he's still a hothead compared to the other two. I'd also go to bat for the KND just on the grounds that they use codenames (Numbuh 1-5) and that omplicates using the Death Note on them much like Columbo. They still struggle to actually figure it out, but they deal with enough convoluted cartoon shenanigans like spanking vampires and supernatural candy magic ala Indiana Jones that I think they have a chance at least.
Didn't know you had autism until you said that you do, I'm new to the channel, and for the longest time I thought that the actor for Shaun was austistic. Great actor.
I am autistic, yes 💚
yay Kingdom Hearts music
I HAVE noticed anime is really good at accurately portraying Autism, I wonder why that is.
It is a strange pattern, I agree
I am a sturgeon. XD I love that.
If you think about it, it can be considered a comedy I laughed at what I've seen
as someone with Autism myself and having lots of Autistic friends, I, nor any of my friends act like this, nor any other Autistic person I've ever met. Really the ONLY thing about his character I relate to is the nervous breakdowns where he just shuts off and can't speak. I've had that happen to me many times
My friend has autism and he found the show to be extremely ableist because of how bad its portrayal of autism is
As someone who is autistic I've never watched the good doctor but I think my mom and dad did and I'm not sure if they ever finished it or what but I'm really tired of autism representation like this since it's always the one that's incapable of everything or the one that's a savant capable of literally everything. When both more extreme sides of the spectrum like that tend to be a smaller section of the autism community where are the majority of the autism community is made up probably of people that fall somewhere on the middle of the spectrum or something like that where they can't fully identify with either more extreme version. And most of us in the community can agree that most of the autistic characters we tend to gravitate towards and like the most are the ones that aren't even confirmed to be autistic and feel more "autism coded" probably because they weren't intentionally designed to be autistic and are written like a normal character. Since most of us really just want to see a portrayal of autism that's normal and realistic and for the most part live and act like everyone else except they are autistic instead of them being babied or acting like they were blessed by the universe. Since while being autistic can have pros it still has plenty of cons and depending on who you are, who you're around, and where you are your own personal experiences with it can be very different from person to person. And we'd just like it to feel realistic and that we all have our ups and downs and can fail or succeed like everyone else. Honestly to a degree I feel like this is a big issue with representation that when they intentionally write a character that is a part of a marginalized community they almost put too much pressure on themselves or whatever and end up making it not realistic or falling into stereotypes which ends up making it worse. And also like plenty of people have said it's just awkward and uncomfortable because most of the time it's a neurotypical person trying to portray and act the part of an autistic person which is really weird. Also I'm not surprised that a show with not very great representation of autism is partnered with autism speaks..... Also a lot of us are tired of this "autism excuses everything" trope since then it gives a lot of people that conclusion that we just use our autism to get out of everything or excuse our behavior. Just for once could we please have normal representation where maybe the people behind it actually listen to the community and try to understand what they're writing instead of it feeling like they looked up one Wikipedia page and used that as their source.
And also like a lot of them seem to forget autism is a spectrum and even in person to person it's very different and it also presents differently in boys and girls. It's aggravating because they don't seem to grasp this and just assume we're all the same while a lot of us feel really similar we're still all very different from each other and it's why I hate stereotypes as a whole.
I never thought House was autistic but I don't see how he is a bad character. I think House can be an antihero sometimes but also has a boundary to himself that prevents him from going full villain. He knows when he takes it too far and, while he doesn't necessarily care about his patients, he is focused on treating them to the best of his ability. I think the fact that he doesn't express these emotions is what helps make him anti-social, but it doesn't make him a "bad' character. I feel like there's a dangerous mindset going around now that paints characters who don't express positivity and outward emotions bad when their actions to help or save people invalidate this.
Hey Otter. So I'm new to this channel but I always felt media has to have a long time understanding autism. Sia's Music movie was the worst autism representation I have ever seen and I regretted enjoying The Good Doctor and Shaun. I always felt as as I tried to relate to Shaun and dealing with judgment he's too OP. For some reason his brain is like a super computer and as an neurodivergent person it's too much. Not only would I never memorize the whole body system but it's too unbelievable. Also the I Am A surgeon meme deserved to be mocked. Yes I know Shaun is supposed to be the good guy but seriously the doctor had a point when Shaun WASN'T doing his job and leaving the operation. That patient and Shaun's team shouldn't have waited for Shaun and the show expected us to root for him. Why should I root for Shaun when he judged many people. Or why is Dr. Han a bad person when he literally gave Shaun a chance to prove it. Also Shaun is so insensitive it gets annoying. Look I know Sheldon gets disliked as an autistic rep. The Big Bang Theory didn't aged well but Sheldon HAD a personality. I prefer Sheldon's humor than whatever mumbo jumbo Shaun stated regarding surgery. There was also other autistic characters like Rise Donnie, Abed from Community or Laios from Dungeon Meshi or Peridot from Steven Universe or Marcy Wu from Amphibia or Entrapta from She-ra 2018 all have personalities beyond being smart, had arcs, and show depth. Shaun was so frustrating that while the meme jokes were mean spirited Good Doctor fumbled badly at Shaun. I call it karma. I feel bad because I'm sure Shaun's actor was trying his best acting as Shaun. But no Shaun was so bad after the later seasons I cannot take him seriously at all. And I feel Shaun is my dislike autistic rep on a personal level. And I thought the hair pulling scene from Atypical was bad. Here's the thing autism while we all need help and managing it shouldn't be used as a justification card. Why did we all root for Dr. Jackson Han because he had a point in giving Shaun a chance. And when Shaun failed can you really blame Dr. Han that Shaun failed his test? Yes I know he is not a good person but Shaun's responsibilities are his OWN.
Shaun is absolutely NOT a good doctor, agreed. Thank you for taking the time to write this 💚
Honestly, something that irks me about the discussions surrounding The Good Doctor's depiction of autism and how problematic it may be is that everyone seems to be absolving Dr Han of discriminating against Shaun due to his autism all because of that episode where the meltdown happened. This is admittedly me from the outside looking in, but after doing a bit of research on the characters, I found it pretty uncomfortable with how Han had been openly hostile to someone based on factors they couldn't control, and yet still have people hyping him up as the next Gigachad Maximus. It kinda felt like people were saying 'discriminating against autistic people is epic and based, actually'. But then again, I doubt anyone's even gonna read this, so I dunno...
The extraordinary attorney woo is a really darn good show about autism
Never seen that!
@ it’s a K Drama on Netflix about an autistic attorney basically, it’s not perfect by any stretch an has some Kdrama tropes but overall it’s done very very well the lead actress especially does a fantastic job.
lol 9thousand like
As an actual autistic person I found the good doctor just sad. Good depictions of autism are movies like rain man, even though it might be outdated in some aspects. But a brilliant depiction of autism is extraordinary attorney woo. I like that they visualize her thoughts. Even though it isn’t entirely accurate it still is trying to communicate how the autistic mind wanders and turns to very specific interests.
I’m autistic and this show has always made me so uncomfortable. He’s a stereotype and not a character and it’s always felt gross to me honestly lol
I love Community. Never got into the Big Bang Theory. I watched a couple of episodes and just thought the characters were really rude. Especially to any woman in the show. I can definitely relate to Abed's communication. Mine is music. Lots of people in my life have had a problem with it, but it's always been how I communicate. You wanna know how I feel? What am I listening to? Interestingly, if I don't know how I feel, my music goes all over the place until I figure it out.
Respectfully... Mulan is GOAT status
The Good Doctor represents autistic people less than The Cleveland Show represents black people. Honestly, House inadvertently comes closer to representing an autistic doctor, even though that wasn't the intent.
Chevy Chase is also one of my Favorite actors so Community hits every spot
Every character in community is written better than those in Big bang theory, i don't know why you had to make it about autism
I left you a comment on your other video about bebe from proud family being autistic
My niece has autism and she’s non verbal, still uses diapers (she knows how to use the toilet she just chooses not to) she self harms constantly, has 24 hour nurses and aids, and has 20% control of her fine motor skills, has virtually no empathy no emotion nor does she have any reactions to anything. And yet, I’m supposed believe all these emotionally complex, clearly angry people in the comments have the same disease as my beloved niece. It just makes me wanna cry.
I’m sorry to hear about your niece. Autism is currently recognized as a spectrum. It’s always been recognized in lower support needs folks, ever since autism was first diagnosed in 1938. The first man diagnosed with autism (who died recently, sadly) had a degree in (I believe) linguistics and worked at a bank. It would be nice if we had terms to separate the clearly different high support needs cases from the low support needs. Previously we had Aspergers (which was always considered autism, just a subset of autism), but they couldn’t find a clear line between Aspergers and level one autism, so it had to be scrapped (it was messing with accommodations). Currently we do have terms like “profound autism” to explain higher support needs cases, and there are 3 “levels” of autism, with level one being closer to where Aspergers used to be, and level 3 being closer to your niece.
@ I couldn’t agree more with you. I desperately want there to be more accessible and well recognized different categorized differences. Hearing discourse online on what’s good and what’s wrong when it comes to autism makes me so sad because it makes it harder to get quality care for my niece the more the conversation changes around autism. And it hurts me and my family a lot when people don’t know what it’s like to have a family member suffer so severely or that “autism doesn’t need a cure” or that “this characterization is bad because they’re not perfect” when my niece can’t even speak.
why did you feel the need to reveal your sisters private information? also i'm pretty sure she does have emotions edit: p.s. autism isn't a disease, and low needs autistics are still autistic
@ because it’s not just hers, it’s mine also, my entire family is heavily involved in the care taking of my niece. I’m just expressing how frustrating and painful it is when people refuse to see her as disabled or sick. People who refuse to see it as a sickness/people who are just awkward consider themselves as disabled as my niece and it makes me extremely sad. And she has no emotions as in she doesn’t smile, she doesn’t cry, she doesn’t react to anything period. No outwordly emotions. Why do you feel the need to criticize my agony? Why do you feel the need to punch down my nieces suffering just to feel better about yourself? People like you make it that much harder to get the help she so desperately needs.
Bebe from the proud family prouder and louder he has autism heck the woman said autism on the show you should check it out
You should totally check out Matthew from the Chosen!! He's literally my favorite Autistic character and no one knows about him
I liked this show but it was kind of frustrating watching shaun be awful until he has his jimmy neutron brain blast at the last minute Shaun does grow throughout the show but he often resets back to default for the sake of the plot sometimes which leads to very inconsistant character writing I think the writers felt like if shaun grew too much then there would be no show Shaun is at his best when he is willing to do things others wont and when he is facing problems unique to him One thing i did like was a scene in a very high stress situation All of the doctors were being stretched thin during an emergency this was taking a toll on all of the doctors except shaun was fine for the most part with the exception of a humming of a light that left him unable to complete a thought So one of the doctors just smashes the light and he's able to complete his thought I think the show in this instance was careful to show that shaun could keep his composure where other doctors couldnt but he also had unique obstacles I think a lot of what people forget about the character is the PTSD from his abusive childhood and his brother's death When people critique the show it is almost never mentioned despite being a core part of his character and being the real reason behind much of his "autistic" traits most of the time when he breaks down it is because of his trauma not just his autism
show was good, it was not real, but overall story was nice. don't care about authenticity.
Ironically I have heard House is more liked as autistic representation than the Good Doctor, and he isn’t even supposed to be autistic. I have not seen House but generally animation tends to yield much better results. Steins Gate is great for sure. It isn’t official but Laois from Dungeon Meshi is my current favorite “coded” representation
as an autistic person if shaun wouldve worked on those things that make him awkward it couldve been recieved better because autistic people go under some kind of development as their life goes on making them less awkward i am an example of that my mom would help me by telling me whats socially acceptable and whats not some days are bad when i go through a manic phase where my brain doesnt shut off but shaun is an example of worst case scenario of autism where theres no maturing nor development people who develop with autism dont speak like shaun it becomes almost unnoticeable that they have autism but shaun is a character with autism that never seems to have the support system he needs and therefore never develops and overcomes the hurdles put in his life with autism same with sheldon which is why they are chalked up to be a stereotype... someone with autism has an inability to understand emotion but that doesnt mean they will come off as snarky or rude or even abrasive it just means they wont understand when someone is upset with them or what they did wrong unless they are told... an autistic person is also not the villain in their own story just because they r socially awkward... sheldon is made out to be a bad guy and typically made fun of by his own acquaintances because an autistic person wouldnt understand that they r being the butt of everyones jokes but no one ever sat there and explained what was wrong to him with the exception of amy because they thought it was easier to be like oh look at what sheldon did but when someone explained to him what he did wrong he would be like oh i didnt think i did anything wrong and apologize for doing it which is what most people with autism will do they require patience and time to cross those hurdles and the good doctor and big bang theory failed in giving that
I think he was cast like this cos he was typed cast he acts like his character norman in Bates Motel which he played in before this show.
So I’m autistic and I’m a huge Monster High fan. Twyla, when originally introduced in Generation 1, she wasn’t autistic but a lot of fans headcanoned her as autistic. So when Generation 3 came around, they embraced it. And it suits the main theme of Monster High: acceptance.
