I personally view the numbers of the espada as just another mental game by Aizen. He had everyone thinking about numbers and rank, and that in itself can be valuable. I guess Espada numbers are gven more depends on the amount of spiritual energy they have, not exactly on how powerful they are. Because there are big difference between Yammy and Starrk, or should i say between Yammy and top 4 Espada. All top 4 are naturally born Vasto Lorde, and Yummy looking at his final form is gillian, or adjuchas at best. And Vasto Lorde is like arguably the most powerful creatures among all humans, shinigamis and hollows. And to be Vasto Lorde you have to born as Vasto Lorde, you can't just become one, they are very rare. So looks like even if Yammy have all this spiritual energy his evolution stopped at gillian level. Just like Grimmjow's stopped at adjuchas level despite the amount of hollows he ate.
