Sonata K. 492 by Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757)
This one-movement sonata was originally for keyboard, but it makes great recorder music! Arranged by Roy Sansom for recorder quartet.
Performed by Sempervirens Quartet: Heloise Degrugillier, Dan Meyers, Emily O'Brien, and Roy Sansom.
The instruments we're playing include a Von Huene Rippert alto, a Yamaha satinwood tenor, a Yamaha maple bass, and a Yamaha maple great bass.

I'm stuck at home with Covid. But I got a new shirt from my favorite podcast, Herpetological Highlights! So I went looking for madrigals or chansons that mention herpetofauna in the title. Unfortunately the only one I know is Weelkes' "As deadly serpents lurking". Since that's not really the right message to go with my shirt, I picked something that doesn't have anything to do with snakes at al...

This piece was published in 1620, written for eight parts in two choirs that play off of each other. The two choirs are written in the same octave, but for additional contrast I played the first choir at 4' pitch (i.e, up an octave from where it's written) and the second choir at pitch. All of the parts are played on Renaissance consort recorders, but I also added voices in many places. In choi...
How to DIY storage cubes using recycled plastic yard signs

Storage cubes are useful and dare I say, even trendy! Making your own is the best way to make them fit your shelves perfectly and match your decor. Plastic yard signs are a great material for giving them their structure, and since it's almost Election Day, you'll shortly have a good supply of signs available that people are finished with. Besides re-organizing my music room, I created this as p...

    2/26/2023 (JimmyGooodwiJr) Hey Emily, I see in this video what you mean about my moving around…not so much the emoting, but you meant with my jaw, face…etc. I take it … (you had mentioned this on a Facebook post I did)… I am having more difficulties with jaw pain…and I’m am starting to realize for myself what it is to deactivate the jaw while still activating the lips to hold the recorder lightly, and of course tongue for articulation…its really a yoga principal in my mind…so I do have some concept already realized in that area, just hadn’t really thought of applying it to recorder playing, or any wind instrument especially..but, it makes all the sense in the world, especially for an extra tense person like me :) Thanks for this RUclips post :) very nicely played !

    I just keep listning to this. After Bach, it seems like everyone decided that only keyboards would get solo music. Even instruments that can easily produce their own chords and harmonies, like violins and cellos, stopped getting as much solo repertoire as they got in the days of Bach and Telemann, etc. Or maybe there were musicians producing such music but it just wasn't up to the same level. Like Paganini or Ernst. They're good. But they're not in the same league as Bach. Anyway this is amazing and I'm sad that the tradition it represents of playing solo has wound down

    • @RecorderEmily
      @RecorderEmily 2 года назад

      I'm glad you enjoy it! I don't think it's true to say that unaccompanied solo repertoire died out after Bach and Telemann. It's true that Bach is pretty much unparalleled for how well-known and often-performed his solo repertoire is. But modern composers today actually produce massive amounts of unaccompanied solo repertoire for all kinds of instruments, including those that never got any at all in the time of Bach or Van Eyck. Modern classical music doesn't get as much airplay in general, so unaccompanied music of the 20th and 21st centuries is a bit of a niche interest. But there's a LOT out there, and lots of it is really interesting! If you want to hear unaccompanied works for alto flute, great bass recorder, double bass, french horn, tuba, english horn, saxophone, bassoon, whatever - the modern era has you covered. You'll just have to do a bit more digging, because no composer currently alive is as famous as Bach.

How are you feeling? I hope, on the bright side, that this means more uploads now that you're stuck at home. And how does it feel to play while sick? Everytime i get a cold i put my wind instrumets down and just practice keyboards and percussion until its gone. Also, do you have any plans of doing more recordings soon? Those two albums of yours that are on spotify are really good. Get well soon and thanks for the channel.
