  • Storage cubes are useful and dare I say, even trendy! Making your own is the best way to make them fit your shelves perfectly and match your decor.
Plastic yard signs are a great material for giving them their structure, and since it's almost Election Day, you'll shortly have a good supply of signs available that people are finished with.
Besides re-organizing my music room, I created this as part of a series of free patterns, tutorials, and projects that I post over at www.dillpicklegear.com/projects. You can find other things I sew at www.canzonet.net and www.dillpicklegear.com.
Thanks to Kit Collins for her approval to use her sign in this video.
The music is from an album I recorded with ‪@michaelkentobrien‬ , available from www.emilysdomain.org, from BandCamp, or on the various streaming services.

... OK, I've enriched my vocabulary. Usually I watch this channel because of the lovely music. But this time I wondered: What on earth is a "yard sign"? ... Well, now I know... 👍

I imagine they're called different things in different regions. For example, the land around your house without a structure on it is generally called a "yard" in the USA and a "garden" in the UK. I thought about calling these just "campaign signs", but they're used for lots of events besides just campaigns. I'm sure there are also places that don't even use this style of sign at all.

@@RecorderEmily Exactly. That kind of signs is completely nonexistent in my country (Germany). Nobody would ram a sign of whatever kind into his lawn, especially not with a political statement. (In Germany, nobody proclaims publicly what political opinion he has; this is considered strictly private. Historical reasons.) German gardens usually have a fence or hedge around them, so outsiders couldn't see any signs anyway.

@@mquietsch6736 I spent a couple of years in Germany, but I never thought about these signs.
The same kind are used for lots of other things too - events, announcements, temporary directions, etc. A bunch of the ones I used for this were for an arts festival and they had the date on them, so they couldn't be used again the next year. In any case, they're more plastic trash when the event is over!

Thanks for this detailed project description. Marie Kondo would heartily approve I think, as she eschews purchase of fancy storage bins. These are much nicer visually and nicer to use than simple cardboard boxes. I am a true fan of Marie Kondo, seriously, though I haven't yet completed the initial "tidying" of my living spaces.

I'm all for making the thing exactly the way you want it, instead of buying it. I'm not always good at de-cluttering, but at least this lets me hide what I haven't Kondo'd.
That said... the consequence of liking to make things enough to keep materials on hand is that several of these are full of fabric for future projects. ;)

I watched the whole video. I’m a woodworker, not a seamstress.
But I can’t resist a bit of political corflute. I’ve used it in many projects.
The way you used the scissors shows me you’re an expert.
    Great soundtrack too.

I do woodworking too on occasion. It has a lot of commonalities. If you can do that, you can do this. :)
