Why do you never hear anything about ROY Tommys younger brother who I went to school with, people refer to him as RON, baffling! They at that time lived in Frean street, Bermondsey- I lived just around the corner.
I don’t think Islam was behind the building of the tower blocks somehow. 1960’s bad town planning decisions and mood for ‘new’ after the trauma of the war.
I used to live at 21 Alma Grove btw 1975-1979 and remember watching this TV show when it was first aired. I have fond memories of the area and surrounding streets and the part about the ghostly goings on really resonate as our house was next to 2 houses that had been bombed during WW2 and there was definately something other worldly in that (our) house.
What is this? A documentary? I was born in 62 so I was a wee little one.I do remember a little of the 60's.Oh how much things have changed! And not for the better.
Really? Better housing, better off financially, health care improved, women no longer have to go to back street abortionists or are vilified & ostracized for getting pregnant out of wedlock. Think on.
It wasn't unusual to see a doctor in the early hours of the morning returning from a house visit, still in pyjamas & dressing gown with the stethoscope around his neck. Bermondsey had a plethora of superb GP's😂
Some of us didn't go hop picking and returned to school nearly September as usual. When the teacher called out the register & there was no answer to some of the names the other girls used to shout "down 'popping Miss.
These people would be turning in their graves the way GB has turned out, it's on its knee's. I'm Irish but I'm worried about it it's frightening, all their acquisitions/counties have come home to roost and have bled it dry Their system has been abused left right and centre, my own included. Our country has done a 180 also. This is not about nostalgia far from it. We have become so commercial about everything. We have abandoned the qualities that make us what we we're thats gone. Greed, no one is ever satisfied they all want more and still not enough. You can't buy yourself self worth clothes won't do it goldfish lips 💋 won't do it either . It's a inside job. ✌🏻
Aww what a wonderful film …….ignore the nay sayers on here ….it was a great place to grow up…..the community spirit was fabulous sadly lacking in todays world
Fantastic social history. Every era seems to bring out whining old people saying how terrible things are compared to when they were young, conveniently white washing how bad things actually were. Of course, what they really mean is that they want to be young again.
What you're basically saying is that you want to be young again. Just like all the old people in 1985 would have taken the era when they were young over 1985 in a heartbeat.
@@zeddekaRubbish , I’m 35 and would rather be in 1985 OKR , immigration has ruined London to the core , if you disagree you couldn’t of been born n bred in London for generations , it’s criminal what’s gone on ..
100 percent , since Blair’s domino effect has taken its toll London is now a complete dump, its criminal , all my family were east end apart from my nans side south London, it’s a different kettle of fish, only a fool or someone who’s turnt up in the last 20 years would say it’s better , the community’s have been broken down to nothing , the social scene decimated ,, the list is endless … all generations say it .. and even people younger than me in their mid 20s , there family know what’s gone on , start speaking up and don’t let these left wing scum ruin the country to the point of anarchy and hell , this is our country and our ancestors made it great , one love Londoners (real) Londoners ❤
That took me back that park was there up until the early 90s. I remember my dad saved a boy hanging off. The wooden slide when it used to have holes inside it. He fell through and got stuck on the wood
GREAT PIECE ON MODS AND ROCKERS AND......INBETWEENSNOT INBETWEENERS😁😉i fthose who made these films only knew how important and relevant they were,,,,,class stuff!!!!
There is a long standing mystery in Marlow. Perhaps someone who knows a lot about Tommy Steele can solve the mystery. On the western edge of Marlow (on Thames), on the Henley Road, till a couple of years ago there was a spacious white-washed Spanish-style villa high up on the hill, with a magnificent view across the valley, and with a large outdoor swimming pool. This villa was built during the 1960s. My mother who was living nearby at the time, heard the rumour that it was being built by Tommy Steele for his parents. This rumour has always persisted in the town. A couple of years ago it was demolished to build several houses on the same site. I took the trouble to go and have one last look at it before it went. It had been a noticeable feature when travelling between Medmenham or Henley and Marlow. By luck I spoke to a lady who owned a nearby property, and who had lived in the area for a long time. She knew of the rumour but said that the only person she knew who had lived there was a man called Holloway, who it seems may have been taken away by the police to await her majesty's pleasure. Does anyone know if there was ever any truth in the Tommy Steele rumour?
Resident '85 to 90, this brings back all sorts of memories. Thank you for posting. I wouldn't have been able to find a place to live and enjoy a great community without the OKR.
I grew up in southeast London. My parents and I shared a big old Victorian house (which had been split into flats) with my dad’s aunt and uncle. They had a huge rat in their flat and I remember my dad going upstairs and killing it with a hammer. That was that.
Hi mate...thanks for your msg... I had to move on from East St because my parents split up.... from there I had a massive cultural shock!!!!!!... I had to go to a school in Richmond...I couldn't understand those "posh" kid's Nor could they understand me...even in my first school report the math's teacher wrote..Patrick has taught me swear word's I never knew existed... now near the end of my journey...I live in Harlesden
The Wellington became The "Henry Cooper" and I loved going to The Thomas A'Beckett and Green Man opposite The Duncow to see Groups. I moved to Bexleyheath from East Street in 1983. Did you move and where to, please?
The state of it now. Breaks your heart When my nan died in '76 all the stall holders took of their caps as the funeral procession passed. Different times
Mate. It's always been a shit hole. There's a reason why it's pretty much the worst property on the monopoly board. Let's not romanticise the past with selective memories, eh?
Who remembers the green man, dun cow, drovers, frog, the world. We should thank 🙏 the last 70 years of government for turning London into a 3rd world SHIT HOLE
4:31-5:22: that's my grandad, James 'Ginger' Lucken. Not sure when this was filmed, but he died in 1976 (before I was born) so beyond what people who knew him tell me, this is the only record of him that I have.
Why do you never hear anything about ROY Tommys younger brother who I went to school with, people refer to him as RON, baffling! They at that time lived in Frean street, Bermondsey- I lived just around the corner.
I love hearing the old songs, reminds me of my late nan who would sing those songs to me when I was little.
The son looks like a young Bernie winters
Lovely little film, thanks for posting.
My family from the East End ,our London not our own now 😢🙏🇬🇧
A tragedy - those beautiful old houses! Why weren't they restored instead of building those suicide towers?
anyone remember the wholesale tobacconist in old kent or maybe walworth ?
How many of those buildings are now standing? Always loved Tommy Steele, never heard owt but niceness about him.
I don’t think Islam was behind the building of the tower blocks somehow. 1960’s bad town planning decisions and mood for ‘new’ after the trauma of the war.
Spot EastEnders Actress Gretchen Franklin popping in for a pie.

We mustn't forget Dr. & Mrs Salter. We have to thank them for the trees.
St. Annes Thorburn Square
I left Bermondsey to start nurse training & loved every minute of it. I'd love to see Bermondsey again.

I'd love to see Bermondsey again.
I was 18 at that time and had just started my nurse training
Weepy but wonderful memories.
Many thanks to Phil Burket - brilliant memories for me.x
Beautiful Kent - known as the Garden of England was drowned in Blossom at springtime. There's nothing special about Kent anymore
Some of us didn't go hop picking and returned to school nearly September as usual. When the teacher called out the register & there was no answer to some of the names the other girls used to shout "down 'popping Miss.
My great grandmother worked here all her life so it was fascinating to see this!
Beautiful old Bermondsey people .. the salt of the Earth .. 🕊
Hasn’t change a bit
Oh my gosh, the atmosphere was so good. It's criminal what they have done to it now. I can see Del Boy and Rodney in that lot.
Thank you Phil - I still think & dream of Bermondsey.

I would take the 1985 version of London in a heartbeat and to hear the pie shop fella moaning about OKR back then...

Enock Powell was right!
Enoch not Enock. And if I knew who you were I'd whip you and get you to pick my strawberry fields all day long.

Pete Beale from Eastenders is the narrator.. thought it was Michael Caine at first 😂
Used to knock around down there in the seventies. Mostly the Wellington. Later Lyman's. The Old Kent Rd back then, was heaven on earth. Peace.
The Wellington became The "Henry Cooper" and I loved going to The Thomas A'Beckett and Green Man opposite The Duncow to see Groups. I moved to Bexleyheath from East Street in 1983. Did you move and where to, please?
The days of proper people. Staunch, characters, grafters, salt of the earth Londoners.
God bless those beautiful old girls. If they could see it now it'd break their hearts
Great documentary I was seven then and all I cared about was my chopper bike!✌️
