      Nope, you can start on mainline but often they are hiring for encore and then encore flows up to mainline. They do not pay for accommodation during training. If you are hired for Calgary base but you don't live in Calgary, then you will have to pay out of pocket. But if you are hired for Calgary but they couldn't do training there and the training was in Toronto, then your accommodation would be paid for because your training is not at the base you were hired for. Let me know if that makes sense, lol.

      @@tguderyan33 that does make sense. I got an invitation to interview for calgary base two days ago and I’m from Edmonton. Good question. If you are training in Calgary but your base is somewhere else, they will pay for your accommodations, which I've seen sharing a hotel. But if your training in Calgary and your base is Calgary, then you must find and pay for your own accommodation. I live in Lloydminster SK, but my base was Calgary AB, and my training was Calgary AB, so I had to find my own and pay for my own. Let's say they have to train me at a different base than I was hired for, like Toronto, then they would pay for my accommodation.

      When you go to class, you will go over what is called the FAM (flight attendant manual). The instructors will tell you what chapters to study for the upcoming exam. I would study every night until 11pm. The questions were never trick questions, they are just trying to see if you have a general knowledge of the FAM. Although I highly suggest going over your test twice as some questions will have 1 word in the question that will change the answer that you might have missed your first time reading it.

My dad was a pilot and my cousin has worked for American Airlines for over 38 years so I can somewhat relate to your journey. I am however extremely curious as I heard you reference "air stains" . What types of aircraft are you training on. I guess I have been so familiar with the jet way that air stains made me think that perhaps your aircraft type may be a turbo prop. Specifically maybe an ATR 42 or an ATR 72, ..The dash -8, Q-400. I am hoping that you can find a free moment to reply because I am so very curious. (Also very impatient.. I'm working on it. Hey!! I'm here to tell you.. don't give up on it! You can do it, you can do hard things, especially if it's your dream. It was a dream of mine as well & it is the coolest job ever. You will be tested on first aid, but they have an entire day learning it, and then you take "fake tests" as many times as you want online through westjet so you feel very prepared. In glass you will go through the FAM (flight attendant manual) its alot of reading and quite boring but listening to the talking points of the instructors, the talking points will for sure be on your exams. There are no gotcha questions on the exams. They are built to see if you have general knowledge, so as long as you're listening in class and studying, you will do great. • @tguderyan33
      @tguderyan33 Год назад

      Hey Darryl! Ya you get 24 or 25 bids so you can bid how long you want your pairings to be, how many days off between, where you want your layovers, if you want deadheads, what specific days you want off, no reserve ect. They have seniority bidding so the change you get things you want is highly unlikely. Until you become more senior then you get what you want. The hours very big time. I always had 4 day pairings with 24-48hrs off before I went on another 4 day pairing. But vaccine passports had just ended and everyone was traveling the airlines were super busy. I wish I has a better answer for you but you only get paid to fly so Vancouver to Victoria is a 14min flight so you get paid for 14 mins for example vs flying for longer travel. I made peanuts as a flight attendant but I still loved it as I love travel, taking care of people and the flight benefits you get are AMAZING!!

So you do get paid during layovers but it only works to be like $80 a day. You don't get paid for being at the airport 45 mins before boarding (required), safety checks of the aircraft, boarding, safety demonstration, deplaning, or grooming the aircraft. You only get paid to fly (your wage) plus your per diem.

      It really all depends how much your working and where your flying to. Vancouver to Victoria is a 14min flight so you get paid for 14mins but if I was going to yellowknife then it would be more as the flight was longer. You don't even make a round about steady income. It fluctuates big time. But I will say flight attendants make peanuts and no one is a flight attendant for the money. It's for the experience (love taking care of people, love traveling for cheap, love flying ect). Biiiiig discount when you leisurely travel as a flight attendant makes it more worth it.

I always went through and answered what I knew for sure and then went back and answered the ones I wasn't 100% sure of by process of elimination. Once all are answered go back and re read every single question and double check your exam. Another thing is once your done your exam you get to go out in the hallway just my own personal question don't go over answers with your classmates in the hallway it will only make you more stressed to hear questions you got wrong. Senority bidding is also in place so people who have worked there the longest get what they asked for more than someone who is new.

      @theFitty no, not at all. Safety above all. Especially because your in the air sometimes you have to make life saving decisions in a moments notice so you can't be tired or mentally unable to. For example my first day on the job something happened on my flight that was somewhat "traumatic" that we had to write an HR Report. Because it was my first day they wouldn't let me continue flying and made me stay in Comox for 24hrs before I could continue working. They felt as if I might be in shock and had lots of adrenaline running even tho I said I was ok to fly they said no. The next day a Westjet employee called me to assess me and see if I was fit to fly and they determined I was ok as i took the 24hrs to process what happened on that flight.

And keep myself mentally healthy. Also when they reassessed you to make sure you were okay, was that a paid hour? When your schedule gets cancelled like that, do they find backup flight attendants (and very last minute too!) To take over what you were supposed to do the next day? And lastly, if you get called in last minute, can you deny that? Because let's say, you already made plans and it wouldn't be fair? Thank you for answering all of my questions!!

      Our flying benefits started the day we started training. So day 1 of training flights were suuuuuuuper cheap. They don't pay for food or accommodations while you are in training at your base. Being that I live 5hrs away I had to rent an apartment for 5 weeks. Once you graduate and start your career as a FA they pay your hotels on layovers and you make what's called a "per deim" every hour that you are away from base.. works out to be $80 a day so that $80 can go "towards" food or you can pack a big lunch bag and keep your per diem.

      Thank you so much!💕 My base was Calgary so if people lived around the surrounding area they could drive or take the bus, WestJet does not pay for any public fees. For myself, I live 5hrs away from Calgary so I can fly from my nearest airport to Calgary for free if it's to go to work. If you are flying to work the you must wear your uniform and help groom the aircraft after. Also if for what ever reason they are down a flight attendant you would then work the flight. If you are finished work for the day and you are having an overnight somewhere other then your base (calgary) then WestJet sends a car to the airport where you and the rest of your crew would go and they would give you a free ride to the hotel and pick you up in the morning to take you back to the airport for free. Hope this helps!

    The airlines are hurting for employees and I have heard from several of the flight attendants on their channels that the first couple of years are very hard. Sorry, it didn't work for you. It's a tough gig. I hope you find a fit in something else. As for the pay, that has been what I have heard from all the women posting on here. I'm surprised you didn't know that. I heard that Delta was going to start paying for boarding. As far as now, they are the only airline doing that but I'm sure others will follow with trying to hire new people.

      I knew that you get paid to fly but Vancouver to Victoria is a 14 minute flight so if you do that 5 legs a day you get paid for 1hr and 10mins when you work 7.5hrs (be there 45mins before boarding, safety checks, boarding, safety demo, flying, deplaning, grooming the aircraft). Westjet encore isn't like most airlines you fly from yyc to the west (encore stopped going east when I graduated) so our flights are no longer than 2hrs long, most are 1hr or less. Sometimes they will give you a random 3hrs off between legs which is not helpful so you sit in the airport or aircraft for 3hrs waiting to go again.. unpaid.. with summer there is a ton of storms/thunder lighting so your stuck on the tarmac often. No one explains how much work or sitting around waiting unpaid. You don't really realize until your working 8-13hr days getting paid 3-5hrs then it hits you. As awful as that all sounds I still loved it but I don't think it's fair.
