Episode 3.3: The Sweaty Armpit Episode
"I could be wrong, but I know I'm not." - Kara Goucher.
You know it's a good episode when Kara drops that quote.
In this episode, Des and Kara cover a topic that you DID ask for. They give you their hot takes on the return of Shelby Houlihan from her 4-year ban. As you might expect, it is complicated, so find some paper towels and put them under those armpits... it gets warm-ish in here over the second half of the episode.
First, they recap an amazing weekend in Houston with their perspectives on all of the races, including those that aren't getting enough attention - Erika Kemp's 2:22 and Weini Kelati's second American record. And yes, they give Conner Mantz his flowers too while covering ...

    I think it is funny to hear all the talk about the weather in Houston after Kara commented that people should stop talking about the weather for marathons! : ) Also, it is nice to hear that Kara and Des like to warm up for a couple of miles before running at faster paces. I know that is true for older (age 66) non-elites so it is comforting to know that it also happens to elites that aren't even old yet.

    Great pod , never miss it. Lot of opinions re the men’s 1/2 finish and good minds can disagree. IMHO it was definitely interference. I like most reading this have seen a lot of races in my 73 years and I can’t remember another race where someone obviously leaned into a competitor a the line to impede them. Also I don’t believe it should be up to the runner impeded to complain, the race officials should be savvy enough to see it for what it was and enforce a clean race just as they do with doping. Other runners aren’t required to complain to have a winning competitor drug tested why should they be required to enforce physical clean racing? All the major sports have officials that understand their sport well enough to call inappropriate physical contact, running race officials should be savvy enough to do the same.

    I completely agree that Shelby and her camp painted the victim narrative. I don't think the media started that. SOME outlets have boosted that but it all traces back to Shelby herself. I still remember Kara and Chris discussing these on the other pod at the time. My opinion hasn't changed. She doped. She paid the price. Now let's see how the rest of her career plays out.

    In regards to the Shelby situation-I do not think she intentional doped. I do think that Bowerman is very insular and I think Jerry and the lawyers took over and did a bad job trying to prove her innocence and fumbled horribly. I know they only had 10 days to find where the contamination came from so I think they stuck with the burrito story and didn't look elsewhere.

    I don't think you *should* have blind faith in the system.. that's the lesson here...and you're 100% right Kara.. the media messed up the headlines... "blaming a burrito" was diminutive. The poor woman scrambled to consider everything and test her innocence in hopes of exonerating herself, while WADA's hid in the shadows for months placing her future in limbo without the decency of communications on their protocol. Thereafter, WADA tried to protect their stance with a slew of moves that were conflicts of interest. Can you imagine if WADA was wrong here? They messed up her test? Listening to USADA's head speak on this case in the podcast "The Running Effect"... he alludes immediately (when asked about Shelby's case) that the drug testing process is not perfect... this gave me pause. We all truly care about this sport and the system that is supposed to keep clean athletes safe.. I hope the sport and its communities continue to challenge and question WADA's process, making sure it's bulletproof and finessed.. Anyhow... you both are so so thoughful.. this is truly one of the only productive conversations out there on this topic. So appreciate your work.

    • @ddavila22
      @ddavila22 3 дня назад

      I feel like Kara somewhat addressed this during the episode. What exactly has Shelby done in the meantime to change the system? I agree the system will never be perfect but if I have to take a leap of faith at some point, and I do, I’m choosing to trust the system and not a singular athlete who was unable to prove how the banned substance ended up in her body. Just my two cents.

    • @MG_SLVN
      @MG_SLVN 3 дня назад

      @@ddavila22 for sure! you both so thoughtfully considered WADA's fallibility.. I think what I feel is so tough here is I don't think a systemic change and audit is ever a one-person job, potential progress to close the gaps takes so much and I think a very collective effort... and perhaps her return, which I am confident will be incredible, will be a tangible testament and model that inspires us all to do a double take together..

    I would love for there to be some labor awareness here also - it's interesting to hear words like "appreciation" in these situations. This "reads" like anti-labor. Is it "just business" always? The reason we have labor laws is because businesses have power over workers and they do what they can to squeeze every ounce of "surplus" out of them. Your business, as far as I can tell, is very unstable and unpredictable - primarily because athletes "break" and are then "used up" and tossed aside.

    Very interesting discussion on brand contracts! Here are my two cents: it's just business-it always has been. In my NIKE blog post (where I discussed Kara’s book), my main point was that NIKE isn’t a sports brand-it’s a marketing brand. They’ll do whatever it takes to market their products and boost revenue. Also, the model of marketing products through celebrity athlete sponsorships was pioneered by NIKE too, which I also touched on in my article. That said, I’ve ditched NIKE and now exclusively run in Brooks shoes. Are Brooks the only shoes on the market? Of course not. But I chose Brooks because of Des Linden. After reading her book when it came out, I bought a pair of Brooks Ghosts and I liked them. When I decided to ditch NIKE after reading Kara’s book, I thought: BROOKS is my brand now! But was it because they’re the best? They work for me, but the best shoe or brand does not exist, it depends. But I chose Brooks because of Des. Everything she stands for-her authenticity, how she won Boston, her “tell-it-like-it-is” attitude-resonates with me. That connection with Des is what led me to Brooks. And Brooks knows this, otherwise she would not continue to enjoy their sponsorship. It’s the same reason Patagonia is my go-to clothing brand, or why I drive a Subaru and shop at REI. At the end of the day, it’s all marketing, but it’s marketing that aligns with my values. Those are my two cents! 🙂 Here's the link to my NIKE post if someone is interested: francescborrull.wordpress.com/2024/04/08/in-the-footsteps-of-nike-navigating-marketing-brilliance-and-corporate-responsibility/ Oh, by the way, I also loved Shrinking!!!
