Episode 2.28: The Elephant and Humble Pie, Your Final Olympics Recap

  • The mood was spicy for this one, fueled by Olipop and post-Olympics sleep deprivation and jetlag! The result is yet another banger episode from Des and Kara.
This one starts with some fun behind-the-scenes intel on the Olympic Village and why athletes might choose to stay outside of it.
Then, they very thoroughly address THE elephant in the room, giving their perspectives on the criticism Fiona O'Keeffe has received for not dropping from the marathon. You might have your opinion on this, but I promise you that Des and Kara will teach you a side of this story that you didn't know. It is a lot more complicated than the social media "pundits" might think.
After that, they turn to recaps of the M800, W1500, M5000, and both marathons to wrap up their coverage of the Paris Olympics, including some humble pie served very warm.
We are sad it's over, but so very happy that it happened. What an epic end to these Games!
Thank you to our sponsors for this episode - presenting sponsor Brooks Running and Olipop. As usual, to support the podcast and get your Olipop fix, use code NOBODYASKEDUS for 15% off at drinkolipop.com.

I can’t believe NBC couldn’t figure out some way to comp Dez for adding her expertise to the broadcast. It’s not like they pulled some weekend jogger in for this; she’s an 😊Olympian and Boston Marathon champion. Surely there was room in their budget to minimally upgrade her to first/business class for her flight home or tell her to enjoy a long weekend somewhere on NBC’s dime.

Once again, your insight, personal experiences, logic, and compassion have provided great perspective. I'm betting Fiona spent days tormeting herself with whether or not she should toe the line. She probably knew the negative public comments would assault her. And as the days go on, those who post mean comments will have moved on to other things in their life, while Fiona likely continues to deal emotionally with her injury and her lost chance at running the race of her dreams, for which she'd prepared for months.

On the world feed for the Marathon. As someone who watches the Tour De France every year, that’s how they filmed it, like the epic bike race. At least that’s how it felt to me. Since part of the goal of the Olympics from the Paris point of view I can see what they were intending, they had the overhead so the commentators could talk about what monument was being shown and on the tour they often do artistic shots of wheels etc.

Thanks for addressing The Elephant. I posted the video on X which probably fueled some of the criticism, but now see how much deeper it is than what we see on TV. I feel that runners are a uniquely supportive community that would want to give others a chance if they are not in shape to finish. There is no doubt it’s more complex than that, especially with the contract, money, and career implications of deciding not to start.

A person who makes a US Olympic team, trains post-selection, and makes a good-faith effort to make it to the starting line should, in my opinion, forever be considered a member of that team. There should be no disincentive to making an informed decision about one's health and only the athlete should be able to make that decision.

I agree Mike Tirico is the Best. I'd expect nothing less from someone from Michigan! 🙂 Des also made a good point about the Men's 5000. There was a NBC camera man out on the track filming the men's high jump. All of a sudden he gets swallowed by the 5000 runners forgetting they were running. He definitely effected some of the runners.

I think super shoes help more on the downhill than the up. They keep the legs fresher from the more impact on the downhills due to the plate and super foams. I ran Boston 2023 in super shoes while my previous 4 Bostons were in regular road flats and my legs were a lot fresher through Newton and after than they have ever been at Boston.
Kipchoge can’t run hills. Boston showed that. He’s amazing but best at flat courses with pacers. He’s the greatest time trialist of all time. He’s not going anywhere near Boston or NYC.
Y’all should call major marathons together. Y’all did so well!

It was a really good non-stop from Paris. I watched zero movies... but I love The Devil Wears Prada movie also!! I wondered about Fiona as I stood on the roadside around 37ish K. Thanks for all of this and all you do!! It helps me understand SO much better. As soon as I saw that Fiona dropped out, I felt for her. She earned that spot and gave it a go. I hope she turns off the noise and takes care of herself.

Love your work here ladies, so lets really address the many elephants in the room more directly. Its high time that white grumpy old men in suits stopped traveling business and first class around the world to meets whilst representing national organizations as long as the athletes, who are ALWAYS the stars of the show, have to travel in coach. Instead of athletes being out of pocket to cater for the things they SHOULD have to perform at the level ,they, and everyone wants them to perform at a high level, then this is a must. Athletes in Track and Field need to take more control of the situation. You have the power, stop giving into them. (The Administrators). Track and Field doesnt look enough and learn from other sports where these types of issues are being addressed faster. Take tennis, as another global sport current management have been forced by the Players Association to better look after tennis players on ALL tours, men and women. This is now starting to change the landscape of global tennis in favor of the player. What Track and Field doesnt need IMHO is ambitious ex athlete, come Entrepreneurs who want to make a quick buck from track and field, aka Michael Johnson by setting up a prima donna series that firstly completely ignores field athletes, and only looks to make the top elite 1%ers even richer. Track and Field needs a GLOBAL solution that is NOT United States centric, and that address all matters. This includes, but is not limited to, the athletes career pathways, ) so NCAA athletes dont need to take PEDS, remuneration ( so athletes can survive and thrive) and of course the biggest issue, being more successful eliminating the drug cheats as much as possible. Whats happening in Kenya, China and Ethiopia at present is slowly killing the soul of athletics. The IOC is just another political machine that treats athletes like BS, just look at what the Triathletes in Paris had to go through swimming in one of the dirtiest rivers in Europe. So many of them are now getting sick and who cares, not the IOC. Its time for athletes to act like business people, to take control and to insist on the structures and outcomes to make the entire experience worthwhile, safe and fair. Keep up the great work and do not be silenced.

The basketball teams were getting everything they wanted. There needs, but will never happen, to be a overhaul of the IOC. The amount of money being made by them is astonishing. There also needs to be a huge change in allowing athletes to compete with their sponsorship brands as their clothing. It can all be designed as the country look but with different looks. And for track and field, can we please drop those enormous name bibs, so not necessary.

As you often make plain that most athletes are not making the money in track (never the real money in any sport) - it would be good to sometimes make plain you are discussing a labor issue - there is a massive "plantation" ethos in track and field...the athletes are almost less valuable than a good horse. The capitalist/owner class is very apparent in sports. And saying you should spend money on yourself is something that often just can't be done. You both clearly CAN afford to make things better for yourselves. Others can't and that in itself is a real competitive advantage.
