Back in the day (late 60s and 70s) Bozza was very popular, as were so many of the Paris Conservatory composers. Most of them wrote some very good chamber music, too.

I had an old LP with Leonard Sharrow that included this. The quality of recording sound on this is very good, but I think Sharrow’s interpretation was better. Heck, he probably knew Bozza.

I’ve played bassoon for 60+ years and thought I’d heard it all. However this piece takes the cake. The technical prowess required is way beyond what I could have ever summoned. Perhaps Mr. Van Sambeek has extra fingers? This performance is breathtaking.

A solo bassoon piece, with no accompaniment at all, is truly difficult to write. From the very first bar, the master has captured my attention. I don't feel any sense of showing off technical skills, the entire piece uniquely documents the style. The aspect I appreciate most about this piece is that the master did not force to change the musical content out of fear of loneliness. The consistency throughout the entire piece is quite strong, and the ending leaves the listener with a sense of completeness (although it also feels quite lonely) Nowadays, it's quite possible that for many people, listening to such a 12-minute piece of music would feel very boring. But if one can leisurely appreciate the subtle changes in this piece, it can also be very exciting.

Allegro pesante starts at 9'50". The Molto adagio is more like an introduction before the Allegro, which continues for the rest of the movement (but the adagio theme comes back, notsted in fast tempo).

@@chembaliszt484 I’ll be honest, what I wrote was too harsh, so I edited my comment. Mostly it’s not wrong notes, but bad spelling and bad typography. Generally a lot of the solo part should have been spelled in tenor clef, especially the variation starting at 7:15 and the rondo theme. I suppose what ticked me off the most was: 5:20 the repeated accidentals in the top right bar, 8:13 second note of bassoon. Spelling of rests: 4:38 dotted quarter forbidden, bottom system the two quarter rests filling a bar, 5:38 wrong durations before double bar, 6:48 and 8:18 wrong vertical position of rests, on the latter page and the following pages also the off-beat quarter rests in 6/8 time are egregious. 9:51 second last bar look at the note heads on the wrong side of the stem!

Modern bassoons are difficult enough to play but when I hear what some have played on the older, more primitive instruments perhaps with only a few keys, I am humbled.
