How to talk about stopping dialysis
Просмотров 9 тыс.Год назад
Dialysis care providers tend to focus just on the numbers, but trying to make the numbers perfect may be causing more harm than benefit. In this video, I give real talk about when and how to stop (or at least change) dialysis. I say more on my website blog: www.thenephrologist.com/blog/2023/2/12/so-you-think-you-want-to-stop-dialysis Check it out!

Did you know the equation to estimate kidney function (GFR) included race? Not for everybody...just Black people. In this video I get extra real about how it happened, why this might still matter, and the fight (led by medical students!) to end it. Thank you for your videos. I just discovered you today on RUclips. I absolutely love your short videos. I just found out about my own stage 3a CKD. I'm in shock to be honest with you. I have been upset for a few days because I never saw this coming and now feel like I've gone from 0 to Stage 3a in a blink of an eye. I will be 62 in December and I want to maintain a healthy livable life as best I can. But I myself would have taken this news much better if I knew this was coming go me at sometime in my life. I will be watching your videos and educating myself from this day forward. Keep up the good work. BTW ... YOUR HAIR! Don't say this at the airport ...but your hair is the BOMB 💣!
I’am 74 my primary care says it’s part of getting older!!!! Check blood again in 6 months.
Thank you so much for the information. I just went on dialysis JUL23, and needed the information since all that has happened to me is upsetting and has drastically changed my life. I have been struggling with the uncertainty of what happens next in my life after surviving a NDE in OCT21 and JUN23.
I have been on dialysis for 18 months , it's not too bad and the nurses are great !
I only found out by looking at my boyfriend’s paperwork they left him with when being discharged from a hospital stay for heart failure. I was looking over it before we left so I could ask any questions I had before we left. I asked the nurse what’s this CKD kidney stage 3b? she repeated what I said and then said as she took her cellphone from her pocket “oh lets ask the (something like the almighty) google says. I was shocked that she didn’t know it maybe she was being a b- and was making a point I could had googled it. Crazy that no one told him or me about it and if it wasn’t for me asking them we wouldn’t had known. I’m so lost I see the medication they put him on are actually things that can make is kidneys worse. It’s like the egg or the chicken which caused what? Also wanted to add can’t believe the doctor who did a lithoscropy or whatever didn’t check his kidney function after to make sure they still worked and also didn’t become a diabetic Still don’t know
Thank you that would be my 1st question what should i eat, and how much water to drink👏
If my CKD had been brought to my attention before I reached stage 3 I could have taken steps to halt its progression! I am now desperately playing catchup trying to reverse it. My GP doesn't seem to care but that may be due to being an older person.
I agree.
Thank you so much for information PD patient in Michigan
I am a 78 year old white male with diagnosed with stage 3A I weigh 170 pounds 510 height I have a very low energy they say my kidneys are on 58% function. What do you think about this and what’s the timeline please thank you. I do not have high blood pressure but I do have pre-diabetes.
May God Continue To Bless You..Thanks Very Much For Your Advice ❤❤❤❤❤❤My Son Is Waiting For A Kidney, hes 42 & eat very healthy all his life. He have Lypus & thats why hes going to dialysis, its been 14 yrs. Im praying that he will receive a kidney real soon & live a good life ( happy) in Jesus Name Amen ❤❤❤❤😊😊
Well I see continuing dialysis when the person has no idea where they are due to age. I personally have do not resuscitate at the clinic. If I wake up I will not be happy. Long list of medical problems.
Every patient has autonomy when making medical care decisions. The conversation should start with WHY start dialysis in the first place. I have made the life choice NOT to start dialysis in the first place. Complications, poorly trained staff and medical errors with no apparent accountability are valid reasons to be wary of starting in the first place.
I have kidney failure.. but I decided not to extend my life.. I dont have a wife or kids and no family so.. I am at peace to dying from my kidney failure..
I'm sorry for the difficulties experienced by fellow patients. However, ARE YOU CRAZY? I am so happy to be alive and able to get life prolonging treatment. I am 67. I only recently learned why i was so sick and for a few minutes at the ER, I thought i was dead. Like within days. I did not want to be dead. I have a son and grandson. I have friends, pets and many interests. I just retired. I want to LIVE and i am happy to sit in a recliner while a machine does the job my kidneys can't.
Hi: please comment on kidney regeneration through stem cell therapy. Thanks for your channel!
Absolutely no dialysis for me... too many complications, untrained staff members, and no oversight of the dialysis centers, not to forget that being hooked up to a machine 3xweek for 3-6 hours is not the quality of life for me. I've had a nice life and I take responsibility for my choices.
Are you a female? Do you want to get pregnant?
I started my Dialysis back in January but have been going through kidney failure since 2023 and yeah there are times when im like screw it and just wanna quite but then we can't selfish we gotta use that strong willpower thats gotten us this far in life
My husband has kidney failure. He never wants dialysis and was diabetic. He's in a nursing home with stage 5 failure, but I'm wondering if that's true. I thought stage 5 was a matter of a few weeks to a few months, and he's been there going on 7 months now. Could they be giving him something to stretch out his life just to continue milking our retirement fund?
Wow...what a sweetheart you are.
Thank you so much for this post! 💗 VERY helpful!
Recently diagnosed with Alport Syndrome with Thin Basement Membrane Disease. Stage 3b; not many informed nephrologist here in Alabama who are familiar with this disease. Thank you for showing 🙏🏾
Im very concerned these dr.s just want you to sign consent forms...my brother is 67 b cell lymphoma...hospital 2 months..getting worse by the day now they want me to sign a consent form for kidney dialysis, along with his 8 treaatments of chemo.. what do i do?
Good morning to you Doctor.I was a healthy person but started cancer and now i have low kidney numbers
You are a great women
They want to make $$$$
Thank you😊
Thank you. Your videos are very helpful and informative to me. I have come to understand more and appreciate the nuances of my kidney function. I do have questions and l will ask one here. Regarding the dark yellow of pee. Does the pee become a darker yellow after eating and the food is being digested even if your water intake is relatively high (64 ounces a day or more)? I appreciate your advice… Ruth
I donated a kidney to my father. I’ve never had any issues living with just one kidney
how old were you and how old are you now?
I'm 64 years-old. My creatinine is a 5.9 and egfr at 6. I have a daily BP readings of around 175/90 or higher Before saying yes to dialysis, somehow I didn't want to do it. Now reading these comments make me think i don't want to be on dialysis. Something tells me that it would be worst for me since my heart is very weak after having open heart surgery 4 years ago. Does anyone here experience any pain on the sides of your abdomen and in the middle of your abdomen?
The arrogance and patronizing from doctors is beyond belief. Let's keep the idiots in the dark about their health... I found out through a work related health check that I have stage 2 ckd. Checking back with my gp turns out I have had this condition since at least 2018. I'm so pissed. Doctors are literally useless, only good for prescription of drugs. Na, don't talk to the patient about diet, lifestyle and habits that could ruin his life. Patients are too dumb to understand anyways. Let's not bother the patient with his own health, he doesn't wanna know anyway... I don't have the words to express how mad I am...
Thank you for all the encouraging comment , i find out this day that my brother have stage 5 kidney failure and right now I'm still thinking if his doing dialysis or not, it really breaks my heart
Thank you for the information
Helpful thank you
Thank you for sharing
Thx for the information.
Lord, help me Jesus. I'm black and find it hard to get on the waiting list.
She is beautiful. But she isn't giving specific information. Kidney Disease is serious business.
My friend is in the hospital for high blood pressure but he needs to have dialysis but I don’t hear the hospital talking about it
Do you do virtual visits?
Gfr of 13.. Does not want dialysis. High creatine.. Doing renal diet. Husband had quadrupled by pass.. Not a diabetic. Only has one kidney.. What is the prognosis...
My son will be able to be higher up on the kidney transplant list though, so I think that's a plus maybe. There's also dangers in that. However my son in law had his father's kidney but after some time stated to reject it. I'm too old to offer my kidney to my stepson I think, I'm in my late 60's. Your video is quite informative. Thanks again.
My son is having all kinds of side effects from Dialysis. He's in and out of the hospital and Rehab. He's only 51 years old. Even the Dialysik solution is giving him side effects. He's malnourished because of not being able to keep food down. Thanks for the video.
Hi doc, I’m female 70 and CKD stage 3B patient. Diagnosed last year, 2023 when I noticed that I peee 3-4x at night. Lab showed 151 creatinine, very bad GFR, foamy urine. But now that I’m taking ketoanalogues 9x/day, creatinine went down to 102. Still foam in d urine. And I avoid meat protein. My question is….can I escape from dialysis? Because I eat mostly veggies and trying to avoid meats as much as I can. Dialysis is what I’m afraid of, that’s why I follow renal diet
❤😊 good for you Sweetie and I wish you many more happy healthy years
I agree, we should be sent before gfr reach 30 and ckd stage 3. Teaching should start around 60 or 50
I'm 67. My GFR is 15. I'm not on dialyasis yet ,but have recently gone through initial screening for kidney transplantPeritoneal seems more attractive to me. My big concern is the following:I own a dog , which I rescued after I'd had a stroke and was a bit depressed. He's been with me 5 years and I've grown to love him very much It would break my heart to have to get rid of him. He'll be 11 years old this month(May, 15, 2024). Adoption might be difficult for him at his age.
"Create anxiety"? No, let's wait until stage 3B and then create anxiety. What the hell?!
Doctor wehen every nephrologist says, once the kidney is demaged can't resotore again? Any any answer please
So sorry Mike. It is very emotional leaving something that you cherish. Take Care.
