Brian Coughlin tragically lost his life on Saturday, October 5, 2024, flying his Fokker DVIII during the airshow at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. I've watched Brian many times at the Aerodrome and always had great respect for his airplane, his flying skills and knowledge of vintage aircraft. I was fortunate to chat with him on July 27, 2024, and ask him a few questions about the Fokker DVIII. He was...

Tissue Covering a Large Model Airplane Wing, A Slightly Different Approach

Here's a video demonstrating a method to cover a large model airplane wing with tissue. This method can certainly be used for smaller wings as well but larger sheets of tissue can become difficult to handle. thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You're welcome. I've been having fun making these videos. I've learned a lot but still need to improve my editing and camera skills. Thanks for watching. It's comments like yours that keep me going!
My condolences to the Family of Brian. A very talented person and just a great guy. Remember him from my volunteer days at The Aerodrome and was always smiling and kind to all. He will be missed, God bless him 🙏
Wow! I thought the Swiss chip-carving knife I use was sharp, but yours is incredible. I see where I make a mistake, though. I don't FINISH the backside before starting the front. I'll try your method. Thanks!
The prop is much stiffer at that point and IMO makes it easier to sand in the undercamber. As always, thanks for watching.
Nice work! And nice flight!
Thank you. Sometimes you need to step back to your roots. 😁 Thanks for watching.
Magnificent!
Thank you. This was a challenging project. Thanks for watching.
I'm here for the sound of that knife shearing the balsa.
HA HA. While I was editing I noticed that distinct sound. Total ASMR. 😂
another out standing build john! i think this might be my next rog
Oh, you need to give one a try! Easy build and flys great! But use balsa wheels...l those paper ones were a pain in the butt! HA HA.
Excellent work! It finally hit in the end but survived!
Thank you. Yes, it's light enough that it can't hurt itself. 😁 Thanks for watching.
These "small" projects are really interesting. I like building them thought I never get them to fly. Yours flew magnificently! Carving the prop is a skill I need to develop (and I need a small drill press somehow). Thank you for sharing!
We've had over a 1/2 dozen guys build these new and they all are flying. You might give one a try. The drill press I'm currently using was just over $100 from Grizzly. It's a miniature hobby drill press with varaiable speed. So far, working out great. You'll be an ace prop carver after a couple of attempts. Thanks for watching.
Lovely John, that rib making idea was clever 🙂
Thanks Cliff, taken right off the plan! Sometimes these old plans offer unusual ideas for sure. :)
This flies beautifully! Too well for the roof beams.. A wealth of detail for basic tech here. I am somewhat envious of you John, for that beautiful narrow blade carving knife, and your prodigious skill in it's use. I bet this tool is a much prized one. The use of tape to mark bend points in wire is a great tip! Scrappy may be capable of being built mostly from the contents of the scrap box, and she may be apparently simple, but in build quality and flying performance she's much more than scrappy! Perfect film for basics. You make prop carving look easy!! Nice one John. 🌟👍
Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, carving props may not be for everyone. But give one a try. It's quite therapeutic and after a couple you'll be doing fine.
Wow John, you dove right in on the propeller. Thanks for the lovely video
Thanks for watching Alan!
Three questions. What carving knife are you using and where can I get one? Also, what size rubber? Great video and flights! tia
Hello. Thank you. The carving knife is a Swedish knife, a Mora Wood Carving model 106. Extremely sharp. A great tool for sure. I found mine on Amazon. Maybe $20. I'm running 0.060 rubber at the moment, I still expect to experiment with slightly smaller sizes. A rubber cutter is important if you're flying indoors. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful little plane, let me guess 5 grams🙂 Greetings from the Netherlands
Hello! Thank you, a fun project. Your guess is pretty close..... 3.78 grams without the rubber motor. Thanks for watching!
5:19 What happened to the prop?
Good catch! I closed my storage box cover on it. Dohhh. It's been repaired and ready to go. Thsnks for watching!
Hi John! Scrappy flies very well! Wish I could learn to carve those balsa props! Just need to cut some blanks and practice! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome, Jeffery. Yes, give a prop a try! It does take practice but after a couple you'll be an ace. Have fun!
Simply wonderful ! What's the final total weight?
Thank you. If I recall the model without the rubber motor was 65 grams. Thanks for watching. This was one of my favorite projects. I'm planning on another but use the Cleveland plan.
Hi John! Thanks for another wonderful indoor flying video! Those planes all fly so great!
Hi Jeff, we have lots of fun! Thanks for watching.
Visited the Aerodrome for the first time in July. Accidents happen, but it's so sad when they do
This footage was from the last Saturday in July. Yes, very tragic and a big loss for the Aerodrome.
That red and black high wing around 1.25 was the smoothest flying aircraft I've ever seen.
Yes, Rearwin Speedster. That model flies on rails! Thanks for watching.
@@Watchingthevideos99 also, the slingshot glider seemed real well balanced as well.
What a great opening scene, a pilot and his young copilot watching the miracle of flight. Another fun video and involving the young people is great to see, they are completely involved. Looking forward to the winter series and thanks for doing these videos.
Thanks Mike. We sure do have fun. Can't wait until November!
thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Hell yeah to that engine!!
Really enjoyable and a great standard! Two nice things, amongst many you get with indoor meets are the possibility of better interaction with other fliers and, definitely on show here, the nice landings on the smooth floor! Thanks John, this is excellent! 🌟👍
You're welcome. And excellent observation. Indoor flying is actually quite social with the modelers walking around chatting about current projects, or watching each other fly. There's also always a bit of "egging" that gets us all laughing. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful! Nice flights!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for shar😮 lovely to see some younger ones!
Indeed. They really enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Superbly relaxing to watch John, were any yours? My favorite wascthe flying disc, not sure what it's called yet but she has to be on my build list, cheers
Cliff, the very first shot is my Scrappy ROG. The first session I tend to be busy signing people up for the season. Plus try to get some video. You know how that goes. 😂The Annular plane is quite amazing. So stable and slow! Thanks for watching.
This is really fantastic to watch. Really grateful you take the time to do this sharing something really nice.
Thanks Andrew!
Lee Richards annular monoplane- outstanding !!!
That is an amazing model to see fly! Thanks for watching.
I had a grin the whole time🎉😊
Thanks Paul, we had a fun day!
Outstanding video John! Watching it, I felt like I was there!
HA HA 😂😂😂
Good stuff, Bubs.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
The Glastonbury modelers are awesome!
@@jeffreyhagerty440 They sure are. What a great group of talented people.
What a loss. Guys like Brian Coughlin are the Aerodrome. An irreplaceable soul. Much like when Steve Irwin passed away, doing what he loved doing best, Brian's spirit will always live on!
Yes totally agree. It's just so tragic.
Sending love to both his family and to the Old Rhinebeck family. Have visited so often the last few years and remember him fondly.
That super cap Halberstate was brilliant!
Hi Larry, it's a great flyer. Sam has done a lot of development of the super cap system and has several successful flyers.
I was there when this wonderful man and great pilot left this earth. I still think of him every day. The only thing I can say is he died doing what he loved. May we all be so fortunate.
sorry to hear of this tragic accident. RiP Brian Coughlin and condolences to his family and all of his friend.
Does anyone know what caused the accident?
What a sound of the engine. R.I.P. Brian. Old Airplanes allways with some risks.
I hadn’t been to the Aerodrome since I was a kid and, as bad luck would have it, I was there to witness the crash. It will forever be burned into my memory. But it’s nice to see Brian in this video and so happy and passionate to talk about what he loves so much. Condolences to his family and friends.
Unfortunate that you had to witness the accident. Brian was such an interesting guy to talk to. I visit the Aerodrome several times a year and would always try and chat with him at the end of the day. This was the first time I actually videoed a conversation and I'm so glad I did.
Hi John! Your RUclips channel popped up today on my suggested rabbit hole list. Glad to see you are keeping busy and having fun in your retirement! I’m also growing older but not up doing lots of ham radio and surfcasting, often a bit of both on early morning excursions up to the beaches and breachways in RI. 5 years retired now here, think you went a year before me. Are you still soaring in gliders? Chris B. Stonington CT
Hi Chris, nice to hear from you. Things are going well hear. Quite busy. I run a model airplane club at our local middle school and have lots of fun with that. The model building keeps me busy too. Try and still ride the bicycle a few times a week. And I'm having fun with my RUclips channel. Stepped away from soaring for a bit but doesn't mean I may begin again. Glad to hear you have some activities to get you out of the house once in a while.
may all his crosswinds in the next life be light and consent
Rip , ww1 planes are sketchy at best
Rip fellow pilot.🛩
Terrible tragedy to lose him. As well as the historic aircraft. Go west young man, blue skies and tailwinds.
What a nice guy, thank you for a wonderful tribute.
He really was a great guy to chat with. The type of person that would share the conversation even though he was the star. A big loss for the Aerodrome.
There was a fatal crash in England a few years ago in a similar plane
Was it with Rotary revolving engine like this.
@@marttimattila9561 Unless the engine had been changed after this video the answer would be yes. And judging from what I could see and hear , A Gnome Mono 160 hp. Terribly saddened by this news. Rip Brian
I always wanted to build the Guillow's Fairchild 24. But I'm realizing I'm an indoor guy. Tom Nied, Queen Creek, Arizona.
Hi Tom. The Guillows Fairchild 24 is supposed to be a good flyer, but your right, too heavy for indoors. I did build this same Megow Fairchild years ago and flew it indoors at Johnson City. Pretty sure it was doing over 2 minutes. It was built super light. So, you might consider a different version. It does make a great flying model! Thanks for watching.
That B-24 is a beauty!!!
Thank you for sharing this, John. I've been upside down all day after hearing about this horrifying accident and Brian's passing as a result of the aircraft engine failure. Your video has definitely connected me to both Brian and his beautiful DVII replica. Hearing him speak about Cole is just a thrill; my dad took me to Rhinebeck back in the '70's, and the Aerodrome immediately became my happy place. Cole Palen was of course my hero, despite being the "evil" Black Baron! It's difficult to wrap my head around losing someone like Brian. Thoughts and prayers for Brian's family and the entire Aerodrome family during this painful time. He will certainly be missed!!!
ugh... D-VIII of course, not D-VII!
When I heard the news, I was shocked. I couldn't believe it could happen. So sad.
