Contesting from a POTA, does it work?
Просмотров 1712 месяца назад
The IARU HF contest is one of the big contest weekends, with kilowatt grade stations from end to end in the bands making it really hard to be a QRP station. This year I took my radio out to the amazing Frafjordheiane nature reserve, POTA NO-2533, to join the action as a QRP station. 00:00 - Introduction 01:10 - Logging 02:13 - Equipment 02:46 - Operating 03:46 - Break 04:15 - More operating 05:...

Thanks for watching 😊
Ah! I wish we could include TA as well. How excited I am when I see the images. Have a great time, folks. TA1ODM 73.
I saw that the discussion thread on the reflector on that is getting really long now. I hope you get to sort it out, would be great to hunt TA SOTA's one day! Thanks for watching, 73!
@@LB4FH I hope, my esteemed elder. Wishing to meet at the peaks, take care. Respect to the sota enthusiasts in your country. 73 🙏🏻
I recognized the funicular :) I am really learning geography from this channel. Also that super tight path on top of the mountain is crazy scary!
Maybe you get to go once 😁 I recommend leaving the bike though
That's more like it, getting to see some snow. :-) WIll you be doing any outings on cross-country skis this winter? DE WA1KLI
@@JohnTarbox yeah, snow in mid July is fun. I don't do much skiing any more (don't even have my own skis), but I go out on snowshoes some times
@@LB4FH I guess Norway is much different these days. My grandmother used to ski to school.
@@JohnTarbox oh it's common for a lot of people, but not really a hobby for me. I have to travel an hour or so to get to decent snow in winter
Now that’s what I call an activation!
Thanks for watching!
Amazing video! I had my Nico there this summer :)
Thanks 🙂 yeah, saw you were in the activators list. Amazing place right?
@@LB4FH yes. I've been there multiple times and I managed to convince my young one to do a SOTA&POTA this year. amazing views if the weather is OK. amazing also during winter. many thanks for the great video!
That's a cool way to reach the top! ⅙ of Norway. On a good day. 😊
Yeah, it makes it very available for people who can't take the proper hike up there. I've never taken the long way up myself, but it's only about 1-2 hours of extra hiking
I’m glad there wasn’t any wind up there! That looks scary, but exciting at the same. I enjoyed your activation!
I've been there with a lot of wind and snow, that was not a fun experience .. Ended up barely going into the AZ on that trip 😉 Thanks for watching!
Awesome 👌 Thanks for your duel activation. You've got my sub 👍
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Wow, that is an amazing activation!! 73 VE1SK
Thanks 😁
I want a modern version of that mobile phone! :D And those old school radios as the fourth and fifth ones just look so intricate and cool
Yeah, that's an epic phone 😁 It's from the time they were the centerpiece of the living room
You Vikings are crazy Folks...amazing portable Activation Kjietil . Beautiful Place up on the Summit. Keep up the fantastic Work. 73 de Your Friend Günter 💯👍🙋♂
Thanks 😁 I love this hike. Not long, but still a bit of a challenge! Hope to meet you on the air some time soon, 73!
EPIC SUMMIT ! TNX FOR SHARING !
Thanks for watching! 73
Looks like a cool summit, it’s on my list for when I visit LA…maybe next summer! Thanks for the video! 73, NJ0Q
It's absolutely worth a trip. You don't have to walk all the way to the summit to be in the AZ, but it's still a bit of a walk there
Perhaps it wasn't at bad from your perspective instead of the camera's, but my vertigo was kicking in hard when you were on that crestline.
It's pretty scary when you're up there too 😁
I wish my local thrift stores had as many electronics as yours and Dude's. I'm jelly.
Yeah, they had a great selection. Decent prices too
Your shirt looks good on you! And the neighborhood around the shack/tent is beautiful.
Thanks 😁It's a lovely beach, one of a few with a special European rating called "Blue Flag", given to nice beaches
👀
Looks complicated.
It's a lot to learn
Great video! You beat me to it. I wanted to do a "What's on the bench - a freaking mess" video myself as we got invited to the HRWB podcast.
Well at least you have real projects 😁
I bought an Arduino during the pandemic but I never got around to learning it. It's a skill I wish I had.
It's fun to tinker around with when you got the time for stuff like that 😊
Weird effect at 4:24
Camera lost tracking for a moment
Someday I want to learn how this all works.
Same here 😁
It is amazing what one can do with a small set of simple tools if they know what they are doing.
Yeah. I gotta re-lean a lot of this stuff
Winter is coming!
Finally, it's been hot for way too long
@@LB4FH I do love having seasons!
I'm not 100 % sure but it looks like I own the same soldering station.
From what I could see they're widely rebranded by lots of companies. Decent thing for it's price
Perfect timing , I need a scope and sig generator .
I'm sure you can find some stuff that's a few decades newer than this easily 😁
Well done! Roves are a lot of work but also a lot of fun.
Thanks. Yeah, it was. It felt pretty much like a chill version of a RaDar challenge 😁
Nicely done, my friend! POTA roves can be a lot of fun.
@@Scout75PortableRadio thanks 🙂 yeah, it was like a chill version of a radar challenge
Awesome work 👏 Love the fact you did via boat as well 😄 Rove is on my to do list, but I think I'll wait until bands are a bit more stable based on your experience.
@@m1sdh thanks 😁 the space wx conditions sure made it more challenging. You don't have to travel around though, a 5'fer also counts as a rove
Once again, another great video! DE WA1KLI
Thank you John 😊73!
Another great video. I have noticed the few times I have done this how conditions can very , only 20km away, 10min drive . I still haven't figured if its changing band conditions or just the location. Interesting either way.. VE1SK
Thanks. I saw later in the day that one of those big flares had hit during the day. Really interesting to see how the conditions change
👀 . . . amazing 💯😍👌
Thanks!
Congratulation with the rove!
Thank you!
Hi Kjetil, Very informative video. Need to get back into WSJT-X and will download 2.7.1 and get it installed. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Thanks 😊 Yeah, it's a fun thing to play around with. 73!
Your videos on the Retevis RT43 durability is funny 😅. I am surprised it lasted that long. I just use mine at home.
@@anthonyleetwowayradios thanks 😁 I really didn't need this radio, so I thought it was a interesting thing to try
You should try a durable test on the Retevis RT81.
@@anthonyleetwowayradios That one looks very similiar. I have a feeling this part of the hobby could be very expensive 😉
I would love to try something like this someday!
The hills are always open 😁
Great work and beautiful views!
Thanks 😊 It is a beautiful area
A beautiful spot. that was a great way to do an activation, how much do they charge for the cabin? Another great video. VE1SK
Thanks 😊 It was really interesting to try it this way. When you're not a member of the organization they charge roughly US$41 for a night, it's a bit cheaper for members.
Very nice hike and activation you made there Kjetil :-) 73's LA3DNA
Thanks 😊
Thanks for the P2P 👍 Such an amazing location with stunning views.
Always great to get you in the log 🙂
Awesome video presentation! I like being able to follow along with the logger and audio. I also like viewing the camp setup and back ground, hiking etc that doesn’t need audio.
Thanks, glad you liked it. 73!
At school we learned of Norway as the "Land of Midnight Sun"! Thank you for giving me a glimpse of Norwegian Rainforest. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
I've only seen the midnight sun once, that's only far north of where I live. Glad you liked it 😊 This little rainforest was a really nice experience to both visit and activate in. 73!
@@LB4FH Glad to 'see' a person who has really seen the Midnight Sun! 73
@@johnsonstechworld it's worth experiencing once if you get a chance 😊

Another gorgeous place to play radio!
Yes, stunning nature around there 😁
That just screams glacial activity (once upon a time). Lovely area if a bit breezy.
Yeah, incredible to see their power. I could just about see the closest glacier when I was on the summit
I realy like the style of your videos ... so calm to watch with the scenery :) 73 44
Thanks for the nice comment, glad you liked them 😊 73
Wow that is a beautiful place Kjetil.. Norway is definitely on my list of places to visit 👌🏻😊
You're very welcome to come over , we have plenty of hills for everyone😉
