Jig Tying 101 What you ACTUALLY NEED
Просмотров 305Месяц назад
Tying jigs can be a little overwhelming at first, not to mention expensive. Especially when choosing the materials. This video is for someone who is planning, or just starting out in tying their own jigs. I go over the things that you need to have and what you wont need when getting started. All of the items in this video are things I ACTUALLY use and none are paid sponsors.

Jig? Streamer? A Deep Vee Streamer Jig
You always give out great info , tips, and tricks on how to tye and make the lure great and also save money. Thanks for all you do for your community. Be blessed. My friend.
Another great looking hair jig. Keep ‘em coming!
Man, that's a work of art. I'm sure a musky will want to tear into that. For that stinger hook wire, I was wondering if a double barrel crimp sleeve might work to ease some pressure on the threads. You'd have to install it before the final wire bending though. I guess a sold metal bead may do the same function. I was thinking about this because I'm getting ready to add a 4/0 stinger to a custom-tied spinner bait for pike/musky. No matter how robust you think it will be, the fish love to test it out and that's the fun part. It makes you tie another one and instead of live & learn it's fish & learn. It looks great. Wonderful job! I have learned a lot from your videos in such a short time. Let us know how big that musky is.
great ideas for the wire! and good luck out there this summer!!
I really love this one and the 11” squimpish. I think they would be good in river tailwater situations were we fish for musky, or even a cast back bait for following skies
ive always got one on my third rod for follows!
How can I get some of your musky jig flies?
unfortunately with a 2 month old and a 3 year old its hard to find extra time at the vise for ones to sell, but keep in touch and i can try to find some time to make a couple for you! thanks for the support!
What a great muskey lure. I'm sure you are going to get them to strike it. It was great to see you thinking about doing something new. As far as showing everything you did to accomplish this lure. Maybe you can break the video up into different parts 1,2,3. I believe it would be very instructional to experience lure makers. Let us know how it swims for you. Be blessed. My friend.
multiple part series is a good idea!
Love your creativity and technique. Really an inspiration to get outside the box. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy the channel a lot.
Thanks Rob!
best lead for probably any lures. I use gamakatsu iseama 1/0 to 4/0 (and i use the for salt water too). I use marabou with flashabou (synthetic) and a feather of on each side (grizzly rooster) you can add soft plastic on the hook or put a rabbit trailer (zonker). These raccoon fur look promising i need to try (for northen pike)
Sounds like a nice pattern!
Greetings from Fargo ND. Nice tie and thank you for the tip about the coon zonker strips!
Not to far from me in central Mn! Yeah its something i never thought id be tying with lol
Why do this and not wrap the zonker strip? It looks good, I am just curious about your decision. I have yet to try a dubbing loop.
You could absolutely do that! With the hide still on, it would add more bulk than i wanted on this bait. Thanks for the comment!
Now that was thinking outside the box. It came together nicely. Please tell us how well it moves in the water and if the fish liked it also. Be blessed. My friend.
Always fun to trying something new! Thanks as usual!!
Spawn fly fish is one of my favorite shops. They do a great job
Same here!
If you fish a crappie lake, something larger will bite that. I think it resembles a crappie nicely. Looks great! Those jigheads are new to me. I'll have to think of some ideas for them. I've never tasted raccoon but I've smelled a few recently. I trapped and killed 3 of them who were tearing shingles off my roof and also peeling off some vinyl siding. I wasn't about to grab any of their stinky fur or tails for jig material.
Yeah ill clean a bucktail or two, but skinning a racoon is a little past my commitment level lol
Would you add a trailer to this or fish it as is? I just lost the skirt on a spinner bait and might have to give this a try! Thanks for the idea!
Ill usually go as is! A plastic can hinder the materials from moving.
I would buy that
Looks great! I bet the smallmouth will love that jig. Well done! Do you ever use small plastic trailers on your jigs?
Not very often, but occasionally. Putting plastics on with deer hair kinda prevents both from moving well in the water but i will if i wanna beef up a profile!
You tye some great jigs. I believe you accomplished what you was going for with just enough body mass for the tail length. Look real good. Be blessed. My friend.
Nice sucker pattern. Looks like the real thing. I recognize those jigheads. I'm betting Big Bite Baits makes those for Scheels. I use the TRU-X Wally version of the Swimmer Head (same but with a dorsal fin on top). The plain Swimmer only goes to 3/8 oz. and the Wally goes up to 1.0 oz but still retains the 3/0 hook. Those jigheads cut through water well and the hooks are thin & sharp. The only thing I dislike is the bait-keeper wires. I normally cut one of them off or rebend them. They tear up your plastic baits but a little CA glue at the back of the head does the trick. The funny thing is that I was just looking for some jigheads to tie up and I picked out a few of those in my box.
You can never go wrong with a classic black and white!
"Dubbing loop? Naw he doesn-....holy cow he does!" Great video!
LOL i was thinking the same thing
Thanks! Dubbing loops always look ugly until they get trimmed and wet. Trust the loop!
@@juniorsfishingcompany lol I am used to seeing dubbing with like a #16 hook. This was impressive
Thanks! Dubbing loops can be tricky but the are killer patterns
Very good color combo. Hold on tight to the rod because the fun will start soon when you fish that one. Be blessed. My friend.
I dont throw super bright baits very often but sometimes its the ticket!
Looks killer! The nicely tapered tail will do great on a chatterbait. You can't beat chartreuse in muddy water or lakes with perch in them. Well done!
Summer fishing season is here!
Marvelous hack!!
Glad you like it! It works!
The hair colors really mute the head color. It looks like a perfect color combo. The head color is the least important especially when using those gigantic eyes on the jighead. It will definitely catch fish. Great tutorial, as usual.
Totally agree! I personally think color can be a very over rated part. Size, retrieve speed, depth and many other factors may come into play before color. But its still fun to mess around!
JF....Polar flash would do extremely well in these style jigs as well.
Polar flash is an amazing flash! Thanks as usual, Alex!
Keep these coming JF. You will sell a ton of these. Great job.
Hope you tied more than one because the fish are going to try to keep it. Have fun reeling them in. Be blessed. My friend.
MN Musky opener this weekend so the small jigs will take a back seat. Unless my patience runs out!
@juniorsfishingcompany please be patient and catch some muskeys. I have never fished for them, but I've been told they are worth the time put in to get one to bite. Let me know if this is right. Be patient. Be blessed. My friend.
Alright JF....you got cameras in my man cave. Picture this exact spinner bait on a custom poured short arm spinner bait in black with a singal colorado blade. You are now getting into my world in spinner baits. Hint.....try using artic fox tail....not body hair but fox tail hair. I also mix in a few blsck strands of black silocone at the head so if you are yo-yoing the spinner bait on deep main lake points at night the silcone actually flares really nice on the fall. I really like this session. Great job and it is perfect. I design, bend and pour all of my short arm spinner baits along with large double willow leaf spinner baits. Thanks for sharing.
Single colorado blades are by far my favorite spinner bait. Ive got a video of one in the works! I like the silicon idea, ive got plenty of skirts lying around!
What a great spinner bait. It started out like some others looking like a matted cat, but when that happened, I knew it would be a great one. Be blessed. My friend.
Thanks as always!! For some reason i just love dubbing loops with spinner baits!
I'm gonna try that down-sized to about 2 1/2 - 3 inches for crappie. Nice looking jig.
That will be a killer!
Anoutger beautiful jig. I'm sure the fish think they will injoy it until you pin them. I hope you will be able to tske us along on a trip or two to see you enjoying your baits and we wi be able to see them in action. Be blessed. My friend.
Gonna try and get the go pro out this summer!
Hey, great stuff! Can we see some of these lures when they're wet?
I can take a couple photos and share them on the community tab!
A classic beauty! When you're not sure which species of baitfish the fish are feeding on, you can't go wrong with this pattern. My largest musky was on a white & silver spinnerbait. When are we going to see you fishing some of these? I'm sure others are curious to see them in action too. Great work, as always!
Not a bad idea! Ive got an old go pro i could see if i can get it up and running!
JF...awesome pattern. Now you are getting into my color wheel. Will work for walleye, large mouth, smallmouth and spots. Tie it in a 3/4 or 1 ounce an it would kill hybrid and saltwater stripe. Would be a great color for an underspin. Fantastic job JF.
Thanks Alex! Always good to hear from you!
That jig is a great addition to your tackel box and should produced well for you. Be blessed.
Very nice tie!
Well done & nice color combos. My buddy laughs if I ever use an orange jig. It's my last resort out in Lake Erie. For some reason it's the least productive color out there. I usually coat my jigheads with Sally Hansen Hard as Nails or vinyl clear coat. I've seen people dip them into water-based poly too which is probably close to the waster-based head cement. Zebra mussels really do a job on jigheads out in Lake Erie.
Im not a huge bright bait guy either but in stained water or a cloudy day, sometimes it the ticket!
Hello Jr. I got something i would like to see you tie. A gold jig head with a black tail with gold flash , gold under body, and some barred white and black hair. I would recommend a video to get an idea from it. This is a fly but i think it mite be good on a jig ruclips.net/video/BG96diBbRYE/видео.htmlsi=MR9Po0FNFUQE41xF
Ill take a look Colin! always fun to try new patterns!
Thank you, for answering many of my questions to help me get started. I ordered some materials from Scheels a few weeks ago when they had a great sale. They even had the Peak vise for $167. I did get a nice pair of Dr. Slick scissors but I bought 2 bobbins which are too small for the larger jigs. I will definitely get those saltwater bobbins. I live in NW Ohio so trout are very uncommon around here too. I mainly fish for bass & walleye and occasionally Pike & Musky if I travel a little ways into Michigan. I also am only 20 minutes from Jann's Netcraft so I surely know how fast the costs add up there. I'm getting ready to place an order on Lure Parts Online and should have no problem meeting the $150 minimum for free shipping. I've finally gotten the hang of whip-finishing which is something to be sure you know before getting too far. At my age, soon to be 60, I couldn't live without my OptiVISOR to help me see better. I purchased it years ago while trying to work with model trains. There's no doubt this hobby is overwhelming & expensive to get into. Your video is so much help and I'll refer back to it many times when I go to purchase materials. I hope others who are starting out find this of great value as well. Thank you, again and I look forward to more of your awesome videos! Greg
Glad it helped! Thanks for the support and good luck! keep in touch!
@@juniorsfishingcompany Thanks! I'm surprised to hear that you buy new scissors instead of sharpening them. There are diamond hone/files out there that work great to sharpen scissors, etc. I also try to buy white jigheads or I paint them white so I have an easy base color to modify. I use flat white powder paint and then use the lure dip/dye and color parts areas of the jighead with a Q-tip. If you carefully apply it, you can also dye your white thread any color you want. I have used acetone to thin vinyl paints and clear coats. I'm not sure what's in the vinyl thinner but you can try acetone in a pinch. I can see storage of fly tying materials will be a chore as well as the continuing cleanup of the table and floor below. I have my Kirby vacuum nearby after every few projects. I also wanted to mention a wire-twisting jig I purchased from Dubro Fishing. I got the Bucktail Twister which works for wire from 0.041" to 0.062". Typically, it's on sale often for around $68. I have used it to twist about 50 wires so far and it worked great. I need to get larger skirt material for these pike/musky bucktails to finish them. While I was at it, I bent some inline spinners up for Lake Erie walleye fishing. For thinner wire, I find that round-nosed pliers and a nail/screw work just fine. It's not good when you start spending more time making lures than you spend fishing. I better cool my jets and save some ideas for wintertime. I'm sure I'll go back to some of your previous videos and try to tie some jigs you've done. Thank you again, for your detailed instructions!
Its sad to say, but there are times where i may enjoy tying and making lures more than fishing! Theres nothing better than fishing, and catching, on stuff you made! Keep in touch with how the tying goes!
All black, or add a little purple, or chartreuse, that and a grey ghost catch a lot of fish. I don’t have any goat hair, think I might try a rabbit zonker strip instead. Maybe I need to get some goat hair. That one looks good!
Rabbit strip would work well! Chartreuse and black is one of my favorite color patterns. Goat hair is very lively in the water and doesnt break the bank! Lure parts on line has lots of colors. Orvis sells it as well. Thanks!
@@juniorsfishingcompany I bought some Arctic goat hair. I will tie both goat and zonker, see what works. Good luck with the end of the school year! I teach high school science north of you a little. May is always a interesting time! Tight lines!
I would think that if you get it in front of a muskey, he will put it in his belly. So hang on. Maybe you better make another one. Just in case. Be blessed. My friend.
Heavy line and a big net!
Good class thanks Oregon
Thanks Darrell!
Yep, can't go wrong with black. I love a mostly black jig with a little chartreuse or white to give it a little contrast. Very nice neat job! I was wondering if you could do a video breaking down the tools for jig/fly tying. I just got into it and have my Peak vise but found it overwhelming to know what other tools to buy like bobbins, thread, head cement, etc. Another video about materials such as flash, hair, dubbing, etc. would be helpful. You could even hook up with a fly-tying store (sponsor) and list tool recommendations. It might get you a few extra bucks for making more videos.
No Problem! I can get some things together and shoot a video! Glad you are getting into it! Its a great way to pass the time between fishing trips! Ill work on that video and get it out ASAP!
Very nice
Thanks Justin!
You pour your own jigheads?
I have not seen a jig like that before. I believe the bass will hammer it early summer when there are a lot of small bluegills. I'm sure you will find a good matching color tail. Let us know how well you do with it. Be blessed. My friend.
Minnesota opener is this upcoming weekend! Will finally get a chance to start using these jigs!
How many walleye has that jig caught
Its one of my go to patterns!
That is a fine looking jig. I believe when you fish it. The fish will like it too. Be blessed.
Lets hope so! Its almost boat season!
Don't kid yourself JF....this is a heck of a smallmouth jig as well. Up north where you are....tip it with a leach and hold on! Smallmouth killer. I fish a 3/32 ounce in this colornon Pickwick during the shad spawn and they eat it up.
Thanks Alex! Mn Opener is this upcoming weekend so it wont be long until in trying it out!
Thank you for tying these cool bass flies, please keep it up. You have got me back into tying again
Thanks for the support Scott! Lots more to come!
