It's not pronounced "Groover rake" It's Grove rake as in a grove of trees and a garden rake .
That was brilliant Alastair. Amazing place and incredible you remember that chapel still having a roof on it 😳 Love your fathers quote ‘strong medicine’ 😂😂
@@PhilipOlsen11 Ha, Dad used that quote whenever he was above a big drop! I never mentioned it in the video but Dad's parents used to walk to the church from Oxenfell (where I started the walk) when there was a service. Taking the same route I walked! Although I was born and brought up in Bowness-on-Windermere, I have a special connection to the area featured in the video. I see you've changed your channel name, thanks so much for watching and commenting. All the best for 2025, cheers Alistair 👍
Glad to see you back Alistair, healthy now all being well.
@@CharlesWild-k8m Thanks for the kind thoughts, and thanks for watching and commenting ATB Alistair 👍
The National trust are trying to restrict the numbers of sheep on the fells now, which make sheep farming non profitable. You can farm tourists/ holiday makes, who are tight with their money.
Thanks for all the information around Hodge Close and for the fact that our families were neighbours if sorts. Dial Langdale 212 for High Close Youth Hostel. My parents were the first wardens there from 1953 till 1961 and that is where I enjoyed the first eight years of my life. What a playground to have had! All the very best for you in 2025 🎉
@@medievalladybird394 Ha, it's a small world. Did Zeke Myers live across the road from the YHA when you lived there? Larch Grove the property my paternal grandparents bought at Oxenfell just after the war. It had been a Youth Hostel before they acquired it (with the adjacent bungalow, now called Mole End) As you say what a playground. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, always good to hear from you ATB Alistair 👍
@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad he did and he was a friend of the family. I remember when his son Michael was born.
@medievalladybird394 I was at the Lakes School with Mike, he was 1 year older than me. His younger brother Chris was a year younger, they were both very good motorcycle trials riders. My parents knew Zeke very well, when he was younger he was a very good motorcycle scramble rider, his main truck driver was "Tubby Dixon" ... best man for my Uncle Ray! As I said earlier it's a small world!
@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad Maybe it was Chris then. I remembered Mike's name, a little boy and a baby. Made one out of them. If you see Chris or Michael, say hello from me, Elvira daughter of Boy and Mary. I was a very little girl who knew what a "Trial" is and Zeke collected these big fairground pipe organs. They stood in his barn and I was absolute fascinated by them. We all went to Grasmere school and two of us to Kelsick Grammar School. But I seem to remember Conrad playing the sqeeze box for the Morris dancers in Langdale. I remember the Maypole dance, but was too small to be able to join in. Enough blathering, take care. Elvira
Another great video, thanks.

The greywacke reminds me of my recent visit to Siccar Point during a backpacking trip. Another fascinating place. Fortunately, the steep route down was dry. I'd be wary of it when the clay is wet. Worth a visit, though, even if you can only get to the top as the join is visible from there. Now, you've gone and put Norber on my list of places to hike to.

@@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad Magna Frisia, or Greater Friesland, was originally an area stretching from the Zwin in Belgium to the River Weser in Germany. The earliest mention of the Frisians comes from Roman sources, especially Tactticus, who describe them as a powerful group of tribes along the North Sea. After the fall of the Roman Empire, in the early Middle Ages, Friesland began to form its identity as a significant and independent territory under King Redbat. Boudica and Beowolf are said to be related to this strong Frisian lineage of tribal leaders. It is thought that the old friezes originally came from Denmark, Norway and Germany. tactticus describes them as a combative people who mainly engaged in farming in the summer and went on raids together with groups of Vikings in the quiet winter times.(from the book fryzen om uttens)
