For this project I used Fusion 360 for the 3D carving

I use Easel for most of my projects, but switch to Fusion360 if I need to make something more complex or in 3D.

I’m not sure what the top speed is because I don’t have a tachometer, but I’d guess around 12,000 RPM

I think the answer depends on the material used. With this machine, metal would be fairly difficult. Something softer such as plastic could work with the size you describe.

I can't guarantee that the drivers are removable on this machine specifically, but on other similar sized CNC's (including other machines from Sainsmart) they are.

@@CarbonCoil Hi and thanks for this video! I'm new to laser engraving and I'm not sure if etching a painted aluminum card is the same as etching an anodised one. In the first case the engraver has just to vaporise what I suppose might be a layer of acrylic paint while, in the latter case it has to vaporise the anodised aluminum layer which, as thin as it might be, is still made of aluminum and this makes me think that the engraver might not have enough power to "burn" it.

The effective working area of this machine is listed on the website as 78mm (3" or so, but sometimes the available area might be even less due to bit size). In any case, 4" will be too tall for this machine.

The machine is a generic GRBL-controlled 3018 CNC

Yes the spindle is software controlled. Not sure about the PSU voltage.

​@@CarbonCoilI'm curious how this works. The controller looks the same as on 3018 Prover V2 - and it is 24V. If spindle is really 300W - then controller must be capable of 12.5A, which I highly doubt.

In the video I sometimes use “metal” to refer to “aluminium”. Aluminum is the only metal that this 3018 CNC can engrave.

A single pass in aluminum on this machine has to be very shallow (a few thousandths of an inch, I used 0.003”). By doing multiple passes, any depth can be cut as a result, (assuming the end mill is long enough).

I believe this is possible using real leather. However, be careful what leather you use because synthetic or fake leather that contains PVC or Vinyl can release some nasty and dangerous fumes when laser etched.

Hardwoods such as maple work, but this machine is not meant for aluminum so I haven't tried it.

Unfortunately I don't have any code from the original version saved. However, I made a second revision of this project that includes two dip switches connected to pins A3 and A7. You can find the code for that new version here! pastebin.com/31AbS4ma Also, if you're planning on building this for real, I would recommend giving each LED its own resistor. That way the brightness of any individual LED doesn't change based on how many are turned on in total.

You're absolutely right to never take random websites on the internet at face value! However, in this case, this application generates the QR code locally and therefore doesn't send data from the input fields over the internet. If I understand your question correctly, the focus distance is adjustable because the lens is able to move.

The focus distance on Mt 5 watt diode laser is 20mm. Appears, in your video, that your laser was 6 to 8 times that distance. What distance above the surface you were etching did you set the lense?

@@donniee1934 I set the height of the laser arbitrarily and then just adjusted the lens built into the laser module until the spot size was the smallest possible.

Yes you could do this in pieces, as long as the pieces are each smaller than 30x20cm. I also have a few videos comparing various desktop CNC models (some larger than this one) so those might be a better fit.

I haven’t stress tested the resolution, but I did some finer detail engraving in my first 3018 cnc review video. This might be similar to what you’re looking for. Whatever detail the 3018 had, this machine will be just as good or better.
