Hooking Up Bike to Four Big Dogs (episode 38)
Winter 2020. While I've hooked up all four dogs to a bike before, this was the first time that I'd done it with the dogs grown, trained to pull a sled, and each one of them strong enough to get me in trouble on their own. I was a little nervous....

Pandemic Summer (episode 35)

Hi Team! What a year. Here's a little dog escapism for you. Even when the world is crazy and upside down, when science doesn't seem to matter, when experts are ignored, and when cruelty becomes policy, the dogs still love to run: they're my escape. It's been a good summer for the dogs, but the rest of us have been a little battered. Hope you are all doing as well as possible, and I hope you hav...

While I hadn't expected to be able to take video on this hunting trip, I also hadn't expected Robbin to be my hunting partner this year! As BJ stayed here in Fairbanks to help with Covid-19, Robbin took his place on the trip and was able to take a bunch of good footage. He lent us his great tent, and he got some caribou to thank him for staying in Fairbanks and doing his important work. The dog...

Spring has arrived! I wanted to get some drone footage, and when I saw the shots, I wanted to share them. Robbin and I head out with the dogs on the Tanana River to train for a couple spring trips. We test out a small plastic toboggan, which has its pros and cons, and we experiment with how to heat a lot of water quickly on the trail. The Iditarod mushers are going through the Alaska Range as I write this. While my sled dogs won't be going 1000 miles this week, we are training for a 100-mile long w...

Hi I've been enjoying your videos and I'm visiting Fairbanks- is it possible to visit you and meet your pups?
Maybe! Send me an email. chrisgarberslaght@gmail.com
Do we ever raise sled dogs or do we just learn to wrap ourselves around a mystery with 4 legs.
If it was easy everybody would be doing it.The challenge is worth the reward.
Raising sled dogs.Tell me about it.Ha ha.When you think youve got them figured out you get the the surprise.
Hi Chris. Do you give tours?.
Sorry no! But if you’re coming to Fairbanks, I recommend Black Spruce for tours.
noun and verb 😂
Huskies, the "I know how to get over every fence" gene comes with their mother's milk. What a great life you live in Alaska
learned a ton - thanks
That sled is a BEAST in the best ways. Glad you got something out of the video.
How much and how often should I feed my 8 week old husky
1. Talk to your vet. 2. I follow the bag recommendations pretty strictly when they're a puppy. My vets, who have worked with hundreds of sled dogs, say that the dog will grow into its full size sooner or later. The danger is feeding too much too fast: bones and joints can grow faster than they should, resulting in later joint issues. Have fun!
I need to do this
How old were the pups?
You know, I don't exactly remember. But 6 months is pretty typical to be hooking them up for the first time.
i needed this thhaankk youuu soo beauutifuulll
Thanks! Love these comments every now and then because they give me a reason to look back at how cute my dogs were as puppies!
Bros living the life here 😍
Hello from Slovakia, máš nádherné videá, relax 👍
Chris, I was unable to find a Vet that could stop my dog from having seizures. Sasha, my female husky had neurological issues that could not be fixed with phenobarbital. I ended up killing her because she was suffering. I loved her more than anything or anyone else in the world. It hurts so bad that I may never get over it! I told my wife not to get a puppy over a year ago but she did it anyway. My wife became so jealous of Sasha and shed no tears after Sasha was gone. I'm 56 and had many bad experiences during my life but this has been the worst experience. What have I got to live for? Having to kill someone you love to stop their suffering is a very difficult thing to get over.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Dogs never live long enough. You did your part! You did the right thing! You've earned your grief.
Chris, I saw how you love your huskies and I can relate to you. Sasha, my female husky slept next to me every night. To watch her suffer with seizures and the effects was very painful. After trying and hoping for help from veterinarians that was not to be. I made the tough decision to put her out of her misery and it hurts. Six days later and I'm still crying! I have two male huskies and they love pulling me on the sled. But now I'm afraid to get another female husky to have puppies. A Vet told me 20% of them develop seizures. I can't go through this again! I loved Sasha more than words can say. I don't have the ability not to love my dogs and treat them as livestock. Maybe it's best to just give up on my dream to have a team of huskies for mushing?
Chris, I was offered Sasha's sister for free and I turned it down. I'm trying to get to root cause of dog seizures and Google is not giving me any info. It's NOT natural for a living creature to go through what our dogs are going through! I have honey bees and yes they have been killed by crop farmer's chemicals many times, problem answered. Why are dog owners not questioning dog idiopathic epilepsy? We need to solve this problem! When did Siberian huskies start have these issues? Do you know any older people in your community that might know?
what size is your dog house?
Absolutely Awesome
hey. just discovered this channel. I want to train my german mix to pull a sled in the winter and possibly a small cart during the other seasons. reason for personal carrying items, and to carrying my smaller older dog. I have a channel as well and do loads of hiking, but my little dog cant get out and about in winter, there is yet a small enough bootie to fit his tiny feet (3lbs) and so i figured if i can get my girl to haul a sled/cart she can be of use to him. while we dont do LONG hikes or walks, maybe 3 hours to 5 hours max at one time (but possible a few times through the day including late night and early morning, i'd love to be able to have her do some work and him to be able to get out and about more, especially in the colder months. Any tips or advice?
Hi Ashley! Hope your idea works out. I'm afraid, though, that I'm not sure about how to train other breeds of dogs to pull. Some dogs do it! Some dogs don't! But huskies are bred to love it. If you wanted to see what happens, get your dog in harness, put something in front of your dog that she wants (like you, or a friend with a treat), and let her get used to the idea of pulling. If that works out, see if she'll pull with you behind her. Good luck!
Hi Chris, seasonal greetings from Wales in the UK. I've never reached out anyone posting but I wanted to thank you for posting all the wonderful RSD videos. I meant to do this for a long time, never got round to, until now. As this 2022 draws to a close it prompted me to finally pull my finger out and hit the tiny keyboard. You haven't posted for a long time, I guess you shared all you wanted to, also I can imagine that making these videos takes a lot more time and effort than the finished products show. That's the skill ( and curse) of an artist: to make it look easy and effortless. I hope you and your family and loved ones and of course your sled dogs including Noun and Verb and the others are and have been saved and spared any serious harm or damage from the recent bomb cyclone. Thank you for having been generous with your time. It's nice to go back to your videos abd watch a few episodes on a re-run. I enjoy not only watching the dogs but also how you interact with them and the reciprocal affection between you and them. No to mention to glimpses of the beautiful surroundings in Fairbanks. I own a rescue dog Husky with the canine equivalent of ADHD. he's loveliest if utterly daft thing. Your videos remind me of his potential and encourage me to forgive his shortcomings. Living in Wales snow is at an extremel premium anyway, so I live in hope that one day I can manange to let him pull at least the sled dog scooter he inherited. At the moment he would gladly drive me through the hedge or up the tree in pursuit of one of the many squirrels he can spot/ smell from miles away way way before me. Thanks again Chris. Wishing you and yours a Happy and Healthy 2023. Andreas
Hi Andreas! What a nice note! I appreciate it. Very kind! I have, indeed, stopped making videos. It's less about the time editing takes and more about the idea that I always wanted a camera around to film the fun instead of just enjoying the moments. We have recently picked up two more puppies, and they are now part of our little six-dog team. We're having a good winter here! Your dog sounds very much like a dog! I suggest getting a handful more! What could go wrong? Thanks again, and may your 2023 have lots of dogs in it! Chris
Loving your channel Chris. Thank you.
Chris, I've enjoyed watching you love your dogs. I'm a middle aged Michigander dreaming of having a team of Siberian huskies for mushing. I managed to get a pair of puppies for future breeding but the female developed epilepsy before she reached one year old. I was told by a Vet 20% of dogs develop epilepsy and to have her neutered. How common is epilepsy up North? I also have honey bees that are constantly killed by the toxic chemicals from crop farmers and a wife who has had breast cancer. What caused my puppy to develop epilepsy? If it is rare up North where no crop farming is occurring, then maybe it is the toxic chemicals! Any info you could share with me would help, thank you.
Sorry to hear about your dog! I do have a friend up here whose dog had epilepsy. I talked with a vet I know, and she said that she doesn't know of any connection; that as tragic as these things are, maybe it's just genetic. That said, 20% seems high!
@@puncAF The Vet put her on phenobarbital and wants to neuter her. She still had a seizure on the med. I'm going to take her off the med and try CBD oil. Also going to hold off on neutering her. What do mushers with large numbers of dogs do with a dog that has epilepsy?
@@peacefulmind1559 In general, mushers try to give those dogs to loving families that will take care of the dogs as pets.
@@puncAFHave mushers found a genetic link with dog epilepsy. Sasha's parents owners assured me no problems in her blood line. They gave me Sasha's younger brother and I'll wait and see what happens with him but he will be spayed. I already have an outstanding male, just need a good female. I need to find proof/research of a genetic link before I make a decision on getting a single liter from Sasha. Sasha is Amazing, I really don't want to kill her blood line.
My husky has a bit of problems to go easy when i ask him to, when i have my inline skates on, got any tips for me ?
I wish I knew what to do! My dogs are okay at this, but I can't claim complete control. Sled dogs like to pull! I've found having the control of a bike brake or a sled reinforces the idea that they HAVE to slow down whether they want to or not. I say "easy" before I say "whoa," trying to reinforce that they should be slowing down. Also, I try not to do "easy" training until the dogs are already tired. Hope this helps! I can show that these techniques are at least somewhat effective because I am alive after biking with four big dogs hooked to me all summer!
@@puncAF hahah yep they love to run indeed i am so glad that my wolfdog is listening very good to me and wants to work with me she loves it 🐺🖤. Thanx man
Sled floofers the most cutest of floofs.
0:26 Wow a puppy!! I expected some fierce, savage looking mean dog.
What happen to Goober?
Goober passed away a coupe years ago. She was a good dog and a good leader!
Truly helpful. I’ve even wanted to buy a place we laughingly call Porcupine House because they chew up the logs 🪵. Yikes. 🥺😬 Blep 😛
It was fun to rewatch this one! But poor puppies!

Wow 🤩. This is just the best!!! ❄️❄️❄️🏕💥 I started out thinking that a 20 minute video was long. Now I just wish it was longer - what you ate, what the dogs ate, what you slept on, in. Details 😁🤩🥳💯🤗
Hello! I'm not checking comments on the RUclips much, but I'm glad you enjoyed the videos and our story! I'm especially glad you enjoyed this video. It was a great trip...
I used to fantasize about winter camping 🏕❄️⛄️👍 Bravo 🎉
Heavenly! Snow and dogs! ❄️❄️❄️
Sleeping with the puppies is a really (really) cool idea. ❄️👍🥶😎
How often do u run your dogs?
We do something pretty much every day. I'll often do two longer days, whatever that means at the moment, and then one shorter rest/play day.
Are your dogs Alaskan or siberian, and why??
They're big. I'm not too concerned with "breed," and Alaskan huskies have been bred with all sorts. (But I know they're not not Siberian: too fast! )
if you don't mind me asking what is your occupation that lets you buy so many dogs?
Six dogs?! That's not "so many"!! In Fairbanks, you have to have 20 dogs before it starts to seem like "some." But I was a teacher. Simple tastes. I'd rather have dogs than a new car!
@@puncAF was a teacher, are you retired?
@@patriciapattypepper5701 Blissfully.
are there special sledding shoes?
Warm boots!
Sorel makes some of my favorite.
what brand sled do you use?
I have a few sleds. One is homemade (see video). One is a Laughing Husky sled, made locally. It's light and fast, but a bit delicate. The one you see in the intro is a European sled I bought at a yard sale. It's a really good sled, can take a beating, but a bit heavy. It's like shoes. Sometimes you want sneakers. Sometimes you want hiking boots.
I want a place just like yours in alask, any suggestions?
There's always jobs! Come on up! I think it's the sort of place you have to figure out once you're here. Fairbanks is my favorite place, but it's not for everyone.
Found your channel a few days ago and just finished watching all your videos. Thank you for sharing all the videos of the dogs, I really did enjoy them!

Magnifique les ombres du traîneau et des chiens
Love this! Think you go faster on a bike compared to a sled? How does it feel different? More control? They make ski attachments for your front fork(rear is a wheel for when it's necessary to pedal), what are your thoughts on this progression? I've found even the fattest of fat bikes are impossible when the fluff gets to be like 8 inches... have a good one:)
No easy answers! It’s all relative to temps, snow hardness. And I haven’t tried a ski in front, but yeah, when the snow is fluffy and soft, bikejoring is impossible.
And my dogs aren’t sprinters, so my goal is often to slow them down. I go through a lot of brake pads!
Hey I recently stumbled across your channel as I was researching Alaska. I loved watching this series and hope come back one day!!!❤️
Thanks!
This is a very interesting training philosophy. It seems to be based on the idea that these dogs are instinctively pack animals. The traditional Inuit philosophy, which is based on thousands of years of experience in conditions that demand peak performance by the dogs, however, is more analogous to human military training. The Inuit would never suggest to the dogs that they are their equals. Instead, they emphasize that they are on a higher hierarchical level. They feed and care for their dogs, but they do not hesitate to use pain as a disciplinary tool, for example.
My great grandfather was a dog musher, he hunted caribou and travel with the sled dogs,
That's exactly my plan for this Thursday! Where was he?
@@puncAF where was he from or where he hunts? well He’s from northern Saskatchewan and we hunt caribou in nwt (north west territories)
@@northerncowpoke7020 Neat! My hunt got cut short by unseasonably warm weather. We had to mush dogs out through bank to bank overflow. No caribou in the freezer! Heck!
I hear husky is difficult to train
I dunno. They seem to end up doing what I hope they do! If you watch the series, you'll see I often don't quite know what I'm doing, but the dogs show me what will work.
