The Ten Commandments (1956) - Movie Review
Very sweet, i loved the Review ^ ^
Thank you! 😊😊
Keep making videos! More people should appreciate the classic films of the Golden Era of Hollywood! It won't be long before some of these films are 100 years old & we must preserve them so that we may always have a clear view of what life was like for so many so long ago.
@@jkb892 I wholeheartedly agree! Thanks for watching! 💖
❤ you go girl.
Well it was interesting and Chuck and Cathy made quite the couple. Chalk it up to live tv these productions are great to watch. When Cathy (or Kathy) hurt her ankle it made mine hurt all over (I broke my heel in a freak accident years ago and the pins and screws like to move on me) Anyways Heston was too over the top made me laugh too much and yes I do want to see the next version from 1958. These are great to watch keep them coming
@@TimRobinson-hc7mt I'm glad you enjoyed my video!
@@ClassicswithCourtney You're welcome my luv I tried to read the book and it gave me headaches too long winded did find the 1939 movie that was good am looking forward to seeing Richard Burton play the lead see how good he was Lawrence was still the best so far. Oh also the book at my library was all beat up thought I might get fined for damages😁😘💚
I think Norma Shearer was a better actress than a lot of people give her credit for. She played such a variety of roles. However, she did herself in with her last two films, We Were Dancing (1941) and Her Cardboard Lover (1941). Norma felt that these last two films that she made showed her to be a relic of the 1930's and that she was not good enough as an actress to reinvent herself like Joan Crawford who was also was at the same studio. As you probably already know, Norma left the movie industry for good after "Her Cardboard Lover" was released.
No one reviewing the movie gloms on to the first few minutes of Dudley is already on earth viewing people feeling their emotions souls to help and is stopped in his tracks by JULIA and is casing her pain needs but morals can't jump into a woman's life to help that her husband is ignoring her and family. But what Dudley does is intercept the professor to learn more to justify being near Julia to help is to then learn of the Bishop gung-ho abt wanting $ a big cathedral. That covers esp for that time post Depression massive poverty how moral message of supporting others&family making people happy is more important than garrish overt 'fake' holiness using money and narcissism. Boom there is his legit ethical way to be near Julia and help her by helping her husband. You can tell Dudley isn't aware how much he deeply desires being near Julia's soul goodness purity so he asks her to make a wish on a star just so he can legit take her 'wish'/prayers as his duty vs help her husband the Bishop. I'ma huge Cary Grant fan and his way of being charming mysterious focused cheeky was hilarious and heartwarming. I LOVE ANGEL(Immortal)/MORTAL love stories and love the old original NOVEL for it's more simple sincereness and inner monologues saying what in the film WE SEE in the faces and reactions of the great actors. Some same story points the film adopted to portray it's updated more amusing version. The book is worded using the culture and words of that time in 1920's considering even more orthodox in social culture than even 40's film.
I agree! Scarlett O'Hara was an awful woman! Total psycho! Suggestions for Reviews: *Night of the Hunter (Robert Mitchum) *The Hoodlum Priest
Great review I never saw this movie I know my parents did when it came out and if it showed up on tv my mother would have watched it. When you talked about Lawrence and Vivian they were mad in love with each other at the time and Lee (or Lea) was busy making GWTW. Yeah in the movie Scarlet was a spoiled brat used to the world at her feet and when the war breaks out she does everything to survive and she hurts or kills along the way oh well too bad for you. But if you read the book I found sister Suellen was the villain check it out and you see what I mean
@TimRobinson-hc7mt I have the audiobook but never got to it. I do need to read it, though!
@@ClassicswithCourtney Yes hon do read the book when you get the chance TRIVIA Can you name off the top of your head no using other sources the names of all 3 of Scarlet's children?
@TimRobinson-hc7mt I didn't know she had three kids! In the film she has Bonnie :)
@@ClassicswithCourtney When you get the chance read the book and I will go read Wuthering Heights for you🥰😘💚
@TimRobinson-hc7mt Okay!
Thank you for your review! I have watched this movie at New Years and liked it 😊. I havent watched many older movies yet but look forward to watching more this year so I am happy to have found your channel!

This is my favourite Norma Shearer film, absolutely love this movie. Great review❤️
@classicgal9619 Thanks, sweetie! 💕💕 This is also my favorite film of Norma's.
I love all your dresses ❤❤
@@PamRyanAmanda Aww, thank you!! 💕💕
A movie that I hope you will consider doing a review is another Chester Morris movie, it’s called “five came back.” It also has Lucille Ball. And it was directed by John Farrow- Mia Farrow’s father.
@Jasper7182009 I just watched the trailer, and it looks interesting!! 👌 I'll add it to my list!
Chester Morris was a very good actor. Norma Shearer is always good. She may have been married to the most powerful man at MGM, Irving Thalberg, but Norma Shearer always worked hard and gave excellent performances. She started and silent film and she never quite dropped all of her silent film expressions or gestures. But that’s why I like her and she should be remembered today. Just a sidenote, we have Norma Shearer to think for Janet Leigh. Norma Shearer liked to ski and Janet Leigh I think worked in skiing resort and Shearer told her that she should be in films.
@Jasper7182009 Yes!! I love that story of Norma discovering Janet! Norma is definitely my favorite early talkie actresses
I am not a Christian, but I luv these holiday movies all the same.
For play research, I saw Alistair Sim as the ghostlike detective in AN INSPECTOR CALLS (excellent) which was around 1953. The actor who played nephew Fred was also in that movie with Sim only as a son of the family being investigated.
Also, in the book - sister Fan was a very young girl and Ebby was older. In this version, she is older and dies in childbirth. It is said that the father begrudged him because mom died in childbirth just like Fan did. So, this storyline works very well. If Fan was younger, but father begrudged his son because of the mother's death, that may mean that father remarried afterwards, and Fan was a stepsister. My thoughts.
Very true! 👍👌
Scrooge is almost cute at the end. Luv it and him.
Me too!
March is always fun to watch. Personally, though I love Hermann's music, I do not think the story lends itself to a musical (it might be a great opera). I wish you could react to his portrayal of "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" (1931) and his role in "The Sign of the Cross" (1932). Ray Middleton declined an invitation to sing with the Metropolitan Opera Company in favour of a movie career. At about this time, he replace Ezio Pinza in "South Pacific" on Broadway.
@TedLittle-yp7uj I'm definitely re-reviewing The Sign of the Cross. One of my favorite classic biblical films!!
@@ClassicswithCourtney When you do, I suggest you pay attention not only to images of the cross but to the images of water throughout the film.
This is the only version with the gravitas to be called a classic. I would love to see your reaction to "Green for Danger" (1946) with Sim. Also, have you seen "The Human Comedy" (1943) with Mickey Rooney. It is the closest Hollywood ever got to epic poetry and yet it is still relatable and entertaining.
@TedLittle-yp7uj I'll totally do a reaction for Green for Danger for ya! I did get the tail end of The Human Comedy. I need to see it in its entirety
Love your channel! Please upload more vintage recipes!
Thank you for reacting to this. I think, when you realise that this fun movie is basically a filmed play (the play Hicks performed in for twenty years) most of the uncinematic oddities of the film are explained.
OK hon I have never seen this movie I will bet my mother did way back when on the late late late show on tv interesting plot and a bit Riskey for the day but a well told story have yourself a great day and a happy new year🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘
Oh joy of joy it came through I will check it out in a bit thanks for the update love always
Was wondering if you would do any of the classic Marx Bros movies?
I'm open to it, of course! I've only seen one of their films, and I need to see more!
@@ClassicswithCourtney Great stuff luv and I have another twist for you if you like the Beatles Hard Days Night Help or Yellow Submarine any of those would be fun to check out too😁😁😁
Marilyn was my favorite actress fell in love with her at age 10 one of her movie specials was on tv and I said to my parents mmm who is that? And they said that's Marilyn Monroe she died from a suicide 10 years ago. It was a murder the Kennedys were scared she would blab about having a fling with both men and create a political uproar and the Kennedys could not have any of that. Anyways love the review and someone else said do a review of Some Like it Hot that's great one too
This was another Disney fil my mother loved and when it came to tv she had to watch it. Its a good story I felt sad when mom and Dumbo are separated and the song Baby Mine and yes Timothy Mouse defends him and makes him a star and the crows were too funny took me a bit to find one of them was named Jim mmm all in all good movie and great review have a good one luv
Of all the Disney animated films early ones this was the best for me I liked Dopey and Doc and in reading the details behind this film it was like all or nothing if this film had failed I guess Walt would have been stuck making Mickey Mouse cartoons till he died. My mother loved this movie and I believe the actress was only 15-16 years old? And she sounded so sweet and loving (like you) All in all good review I did get a notice from the last film you reviewed it did not go through something about copywrite laws bummer oh well try again luv see you soon luv ya
@@TimRobinson-hc7mt I just checked. My latest review should be up now! Give it a try and let me know 😊

@@colinleat8309 I'm a fan of old movies and anything vintage (anything up to the 1960s)
@ClassicswithCourtney I agree 👍. I'm a regular watcher of Creature Features, I don't know if you're familiar with the channel or not. If not, I HIGHLY recommend. It has a wonderful cast of characters, Vincent the Rock star, Mr.Livingston, the " butler" , and Tangella, she's... well I don't know what she is, frankly, I'm still not sure if she's human...😂😂😂. If you haven't checked it out, you will LOVE it. If you have, then you already know what I'm talking about! 😂👍. 🖖😎🤘🍻🕊️🇨🇦
Hello from Montreal Canada 👋🇨🇦. I'm 50 and remember watching this version as an 8 year old. I just re-watched last night. It's a brilliant movie. I've seen many versions throughout the decades ( god I'm old 😭😂), but I've fallen in love with classic black and white movie's over the past few years, and when this one popped up, I had to watch. I don't know if you have read the book, but it's a VERY intense story. There's Alot to unpack. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🖖😎🤘🇨🇦🍻🕊️
I love when he gives his maid money and asked if she knows what it is for. "To keep me mouth shut?" I have 2 or 3 Ebineezers in my ancestry. They lived before A Christmas Carol was published.
@MeloraFoy I love that line, too!! 🤣🤣
@@ClassicswithCourtney I would luv to play Mrs. Dilbert, his over-the-top maid in a local version of this play.
Thanks for reviewing my favorite Christmas movie. I always look forward every Christmas to watching this one. And I agree with you about Marley's Ghost, I think this portrayal isn't over the top at all. It's spot on. Marley has to be wailing in agony or the scene just doesn't hit for me.
@@Dke721 I'm glad I wasn't the only one who has the same opinion on Marley. 💕
There are other versions that are good but this one is the only one I'll watch. Being filmed in black and white just adds to the atmosphere and tone of the movie and who better to capture the essence of the Dickens story than the British? Plus Alistair Sim knocked it out of the park with his performance.
@michaelcunningham2808 I wholeheartedly agree! We have a few dvd versions of this film, and one of them is the colored version. My dad likes to watch that for Christmas Eve but I prefer the black & white version.
I know now the short list of movies you can check out for me. My mother was Irish Catholic and never let you forget it either she loved the bible movies you did 10 commandments how about King of Kings Ben Hur or Greatest story ever told. But her all time favorite was the Quiet man with John Wayne. My fathers favorite movie was the Blue Max with George Peppard and Ursala Andress my favorite was the Sting with Paul Newman Robert Redford or the Hustler with Newman Gleason and George C Scott. Ok hon I have nagged you enough here for now I will back off for a bit hope you have a happy Christmas love you always Timmy🥰😍😘💙💜🤎🖤
Boy when you go antiquing you go all out you find a whole range of toys to bring home. My mother loved it too collected dolls had a few hundred before she passed 45 years ago. I like the Coca Cola stuff you had and the Saturday evening post my father like that magazine too but for a different reason then just reading it I tell you that story later. My best friend from HS and I used to go to shops he found and I liked digging through the books and magazines and newspapers I found one Chicago paper from a major heartbreaking story the Our Lady of Angels fire killed 93 a couple saw the same paper and the woman was crying because she was in that fire and survived. My buddy and I offered to buy the paper for her she said no was very kind of us but the memory was too painful
Ok could not find the movie but I liked 2 of the songs Take me out to ballgame was sung with the original verses and O'Brien to Ryan to Goldberg is a spin on the old poem by Franklin P Adams Tinker to Evers to Chance and I found the ending a bit schmaltsy but cute just the same
Hey Court great insight into the movie I will have to check it out if I can find it. I would also recommend as another baseball theme movie musical and I have not seen this in years is Damn Yankees check that one out if you get the chance. For me baseball is my favorite sport I follow the Chicago White Sox all my life and when it comes to baseball movies I look for the bio pics or documentaries on the history of the game. Field of Dreams is my favorite baseball dream movie not just because it involves my team in their worst moment and don't talk to me about how bad they played this year its too sad. Anyways if I find the movie I will check it out I know for Williams dancing is not her strong suit put her in a pool and she is a happy camper anyways luv enjoy your day and I will leave another comment if I find this movie been a long time since I saw it
Love these old cartoons too WB made the best ones this one is like the old Frankenstein movie and was just Mickey's nightmare even today is a bit creepy but fun to watch. Since I got you here I found something a few weeks ago very interesting you might not want to post it here on your channel but for film history sake I think you should take a look at MY OLD Kentucky HOME it was made in 1926 and maybe the first time a sound and talking picture was made. Its a sing along follow the bouncing ball and this was the original lyrics to this song. Its interesting how this was made and nobody knows about it but they know Steamboat Willie for sure check that out and if you do let me know what you think luv ya bye
@@TimRobinson-hc7mt Thanks for the suggestion! I'll take a look and watch it if I can! Have a Merry Christmas! 🎄🙏🌨☃️
This is the best version. A great performance by Alastair Sim. For me the saddest part was when Scrooge found out what Fann wanted him to do & he asks for her forgiveness.
@@Xpun3414 Oh yes! Alistairs acting in that scene was superb!
@@ClassicswithCourtney Sim, in other movies, was noted for his comic flair. This comes out mostly at the end with his funny laughter and antics.
I agree, it's the best version. A great performance by Alastair Sim. For me the saddest part was when Scrooge found out what Fann wanted him to do & he asks for her forgiveness.
Ok great review you nailed the movie part of this film I have never seen it before I did see the one in the 70's or 80's was not too bad made for tv version. And you did hit on the history part of the story correct I did find the audiobook and I love the actress reading it can't remember the name but if this was Anne's real voice in English she would have been perfect. Ok the one part that was wrong in the movie its very minor but true there was no kitty in the attic with them when they moved the cat stayed in the house and fed off what was left behind for kitty. I found the story with Peter in the movie was Hollywood taking liberty on the romance Peter was a shy awkward boy they did have a little fling in the diary but did not go that far. I found and maybe I am wrong if I misunderstood she loved her father very much and Margo but the relation with her mother was strained and did not care much for her till they are taken away to the camp. After I did the audiobook I did find a video of Otto gave an interview to the BBC and had one of Anne's diaries her handwriting was so clean and neat also found a BBC movie of what life in the camp was like for the women I could only stand about 5 mins the piece was the last 30 mins of the movie but was too depressing. Sorry to ramble on so much its Christmas morning 1220am here in Burlington Iowa I go back to bed soon enjoy your reviews very much you explain them very well if i think of any you should do in the future I will send you a short list from your collection in the background you could open up your own Blockbuster bye for now luv ya😊😘💞

Just finished watch the '35 version and its not too bad for the first sound version. And TWITCHINGHAM STUDEOS I think is where the Beates did some of the filing of LET IT BE 1969 . You can tell its very British when you hear the Lord Mayor raise a toast and you hear God Save the Queen also found kind of funny when the sailors are out to sea in the storm and they drink a toast to Christmas like the ship is about to go down so what its Christmas so we all go down with the ship on our merry way. @TimRobinson-hc7mt Great!
Never saw this one before I did find a 1949 version very short for tv and Vincent Price narrating and Bazel Rackbone(I know I messed it up on purpose he is one of my faves) and March does a pretty good job in this one. Again acting on live tv in the 50's is tricky and Bob making fun of Scrooge is a twist since its always Mary (I think that's her name) scolds Scrooge all the time. All in all I pass on this one meant to ask is there a version of CAROL that sticks to the book line for line? I don't think so have a good one my lady love your input on all these films I might have a short list of some of my favorites and see what you think
Queenie Leonard appeared as "Mrs. Cratchit" in both the 1949 half-hour filmed version and this 1954 edition.
