It does mean more everytime I feel. For me, it's because I expect Hitchcock to be cold, calculated, nuts and bolts thrills...but this one has feeling, and feels like a confession from Hitchcock; he lays his strange sadness and obsessions out bare for us right where we're not expecting it.

Fine review pointing out very well what you liked and didn't like about Vertigo. Although haven't seen it as many times as you have, I still feel it is vastly overrated and far from Hitchcock's best. I think audiences and critics were right to dismiss Vertigo when it was originally released in the late 50s and fail to see why it has gained so much in stature since then. Despite fine performances from James Stewart, Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes, my biggest complaint is the script is too thin with the main plot twist revealed much too soon and there's not enough left to carry the film to its abrupt end. I understand Hitchcock wanted Vera Miles play the lead female role, but then had to settle for Novak and I think it shows up in his direction of this film.

Loved your review. Vertigo is a film that took me a bit to get into it but I absolutely love it now. The more I watch it the more I can understand how it is the masterpiece that it is.

A couple of years ago my wife and I tried to watch Vertigo. We'd heard about it for years and years, about what a great masterpiece it was. The Master's crowning achievement, etc. But after sitting through about 30 or 40 minutes of Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak endlessly driving around and nothing happening, we gave up. We just couldn't take it anymore. Maybe one day when I'm thoroughly medicated I'll try again, but for now Vertigo stays in the "Boredom" file.

@lanceash Believe me, I can relate 💯! The film is boring at first viewing, but there are plenty to appreciate, and the story does pick up later. But I do understand and I hope you'll try to watch it again someday. In the meantime, there are plenty of great Hitchcock films to watch! 🎬📽
