I’m sorry for the crappy quality video. I realized whenever I already uploaded this video that there was violent wind blowing into the microphone of my phone. This pretty much lasted throughout the entire video. if anyone wants a better video, let me know in the comments.

    Ahh the good old Cisco VG224 Voice Gateway. These are now (finally) End of Life (EOL), so they should be showing up on eBay in quantity. They are very dependable! They were replaced by the Cisco ISR 4000 series routers and Voice service cards (8, 16 or 24 ports). The ISR-4351 and a SM-X-72FXS voice card gives you 72 analog lines (or a VG450 + 2x 72FXS = 144 analog lines!) but very expensive!

      @@Radxd461 Thanks. I wondered if it did. I'm in the UK and we use different systems along with a system called "red care" so cutting the phone line is pointless. I'm now wondering how much it will cost central stations here to change out the kit as in 2 years the UK is turning off all the POTS/PSTN lines. We do have a secure IP based system but it's not approved by the major insurance companies as they demand 2 signaling paths and soon we will only have cellular comms. Big changes to come over here for sure. Thanks for your videos, it's very interesting to see the difference in alarms and communication systems between the US and the UK 👍

    Those were bulletproof. Unfortunately they got trashed when we went with the vastly inferior Surgard

    • @wesley00042
      @wesley00042 Месяц назад

      Just to elaborate in case folks weren't familiar: Surgard is a "universal" receiver with line cards that could be programmed to receive a variety of formats from a variety of brands of panel. In reality, older panels especially had little tolerance for its shenanigans (not recognizing the format from the incoming panel) and often hung up before the Surgard figured out how to reply. So you had to experiment and assign different groups of linecards different formats so the panels were happy. (Also it was buggy and locked up linecards frequently.) It was a pain and you often had customers calling to report troubles on their keypad because of too many retries on their daily supervisory calls (or repeat signals when the Surgard received the signal but its response didn't satisfy the panel.)

    • @KJ7BZC
      @KJ7BZC Месяц назад

      Glad I’m not the only one who has experienced this. I’ve observed them miss perfectly clear SIA and CID data repeatedly, move into another handshake when the panel is trying to transmit to it, and just other bizarre things…

  • @westrex
    @westrex Месяц назад

    Why is there a mic jack and talk button? How would that be used at the central station?

    • @Radxd461
      @Radxd461 Месяц назад

      @@westrex great question. I completely forgot to cover that during the video. The mic jack and talk button were for something called two way voice. Essentially, it allows central station operators to listen in through the speaker and have conversations with the homeowner over the alarm panel.Say someone slipped and fell and activated the panic on the alarm system, a two way voice session would activate allowing the central station operator to talk to the homeowner or whoever. Unfortunately, Radionics never fully implemented this feature on the 6500 receiver. They developed the 6600 receiver before they could ever finish two way voice on the 6500 receiver.

      It is a Digital Communicator Alarm Receiver. The one shown is configured to handle 8 incoming phone lines. That particular model is obsolete. Digital Alarm Communicators are connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network and programmed to call a phone number phone number attached to a digital receiver. The alarm system calls the receiver and exchanges preliminary data to agree on a communications format and transmits the information. The receiver takes the information, applies algorithms to ensure the info was not garbled during transmission. If not garbled, the receiver acknowledges the receipt and both ends terminate the call (hang up). The receiver displays the info, prints it on its printer (large boxy projection on the right) and passes it to an automation system (if present).

    I tell you what. Those speeds were good at their prime time. Today's broadband technology will annihilate T1's throughput and price any day. T1 is favorable for simultaneously handling voice channels! Consider also having a 1760 router, which is favorable for telephony routers, it's no surprise you'll find one of these T1 CSU/DSU interface WIC cards.
