    I have a question… I was just on the phone with Asure trying to figure out what is best to feed my chickens because I am a new chicken mom. They are only four weeks old now. Right now they’re getting organic chick starter but when I talk to the lady on the phone, she said the organic wheat is the most popular and that would be fine and you don’t have to go through all the trouble of mixing a bunch of different ingredients. Do you think they would still quite a bit in the winter and southern Ohio, but just being fed the organic wheat feed and mealworms? I’m so overwhelmed with all the different types of things to feed chickens. I want them to be healthy and lay eggs in the winter as much as possible.

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm 11 дней назад

      @@REDonFIRE you could probably just feed them the chicken wheat and mealworms and black soldier larvae. I would add corn and sunflower seeds for additional protein and fat sources to help them over the winter. But you could absolutely just feed them the wheat, it would be even better if you soaked the wheat in water overnight before feeding it to the chickens.

    • @REDonFIRE
      @REDonFIRE 10 дней назад

      @@onceuponatinyfarm i’m only gonna do a mealworm farm because the black soldier fly farm is much more complex with flying objects around lol I’m doing this set up in my basement because they breed when it’s warmer a lot more. I live in Ohio. So other than what they can forge in their run, I plan on feeding them, the wheat, and mealworms I raise. I’ve heard people before talking about mixing wheat with water or fermenting. I’m not sure why people do that yet. I plan on giving them a big feeder so I have to feed it less often and I don’t know if I could do the wet food and that.

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm 10 дней назад

      @ that’s awesome! Fermenting the feed is really easy and good because it increases the amount of nutrients the chickens get when eating them. It also causes the wheat to expand the longer it’s in the water and they will double in size, giving you more weight to feed them. So in theory fermenting the feed lets you get more value for your money because the feed will last longer.

    • @REDonFIRE
      @REDonFIRE 9 дней назад

      @@onceuponatinyfarm would I be able to put a bunch of fermented feed into a large feeder? Or would it start to mold because it’s wet?

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm 9 дней назад

      Good question, and honestly I think I set this up too late in the season because the temperature has cooled so much that I don’t think there are any black soldier flies at the moment. I will update this bin again in the spring when the warm temperatures and humidity return.

    To whoever this may concern, the Jerusalem Artichoke's inulin fiber cannot be digested in the stomach, meaning the calories won't convert into energy in our bodies unless prepared properly(more on that later). Our good intestinal bacteria, however, will love the inulin and multiply like crazy. That's why people often have an increase of intestinal gas after eating the tubers, sometimes painful gas if they eat too many, it's the gut bacteria at work. The good news is that the increase of our good gut bacteria means we can digest other foods more efficiently, as well as give us a better resistance to harmful pathogens. This is the case for most farm animals too. Plus the tubers are rich in other vitamins and minerals. There is a way to convert the inulin into fructose, which our stomachs can digest. One way is to boil it in something acidic like tomato juice/sauce, lemon juice, vinegar, etc. Another way is to slow roast the tubers at 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius) for 24 hours. Fructose normally only converts into fat but that's hardly an issue in a survival scenario.
