MTH Rail King Union Pacific FEF Steam Locomotive Not Working…Will It Run?
Hi folks…welcome to MTS. Today we have an O Gauge MTH Rail King Union Pacific FEF steam locomotive (30-1151-1) that I picked up off of eBay as not working. This has the Protosounds set up and I’ve had good luck getting these going again. We’ll unpack, do a quick inspection, then get right into the tender to assess the situation.
I’ve been watching for one of these FEF style locomotives for a while and really hoping to get it back up and running. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you down the line!

Hi Folks…welcome to MTS. As shown in my previous video of the classic Lionel train set revival, we are going to get into this Lionel 2065 steam locomotive with the 4-6-4 driver configuration. This one just needed some lubrication and a little bit of cleanup to get back up and running. Hope you enjoy the video and maybe helps you with one of your projects. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you do...
Classic Lionel Train Set Revival and Rust Removal
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.14 дней назад
Hi folks…welcome to MTS! Going to revive an old Lionel train set from the 50’s that was stored in a moisture rich environment. In this video I will break down each piece of rolling stock and collect the truck assemblies and other rusted metal pieces in a plastic bin. I’m using a solvent called Evapo-rust made by CRC and I was very impressed with the results. I’ve also cleaned the plastic pieces...

Hi folks…welcome to MTS. Today we have a couple Lionel postwar diesel switchers. Owner states that neither engines are working. Since these are from the postwar era, shouldn’t take much to get them going. We’ll start with the Union Pacific 635 with the 2 position e unit, then work on the MKT 600 with the 3 position e unit. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you down the ...

MTH NYC GP-9 Diesel Locomotive with TMCC

Hi folks…welcome to MTS! Ya never know what you’re gonna get! Today we have a MTH NYC GP-9 diesel locomotive that I recently picked up on eBay. Description stated the it operated in forward, neutral, and reverse but didn’t have sounds. Thinking this was an original Protosound unit I thought it may need a full Protosound reset or top board replacement. That’s where it gets interesting. Hope yo...

MTH Tether Replacement GS-2 Daylight Steam Locomotive
Просмотров 9653 месяца назад
Hi folks, welcome to MTS. Today, we have a MTH Railking GS-2 southern Pacific steam locomotive that I picked up as a project. Previous owner stated it was untested, but it does have Protosounds. That makes me a little leery as PS2 is more difficult to work on if there is something wrong. This was one of my most labor intensive repairs as there were inconsistent issues. Sometimes it would work,...

Hi folks welcome to MTS. Today, we have a pre-war Lionel 238 Pennsylvania railroad torpedo style locomotive. We will do a revival on the locomotive and the whistling tender, 2225W. MTH Wheel Rot Hiawatha Project Fail

Hi folks…welcome to MTS. Today I have a 30-1127-1 MTH Railking Hiawatha Locomotive with original Protosounds. Bought as a project as the previous owner said the wheels wouldn’t move. I figured it was probably just the worm gear…those wheels don’t move. Quick score…wrong! Oh well, you win some…you lose some. I wouldn’t think wheel rot would be an issue on a 26 year old locomotive. Anyway…some go...

I have the exact same engine, with the exact same problem... Unfortunately, I have recently spent quite a lot of money upgrading the electronics to ProtoSound 3, but now the wheel rot has bent the flanges and is causing the wheels to bind on the track, making it unusable :( Were you able to find a source on the chassis assembly? My alternative is to sell the engine (and the PS-3 board) for parts and buy a new steamer for my layout.

Thank you for your comment. Yeah, it’s disappointing that this is such a widespread issue. Unfortunately, no, I haven’t had any luck finding a source for a rolling chassis or wheels. Even looking at alternative manufacturers such as Williams and Weaver for a rolling chassis. I’m gonna hold out a few more months to see if anything comes up. Probably end up removing the smoke unit, and electronics for the parts bin and scrap out the shells.

What's weird Sir is I've never used a soldering iron to cut wires(household scissors work), and the old trains I've come across, the screws were prone to stripping and d the C clips always broke. Somehow, you're doing an awesome job

The original Protosounds from the 90’s were in collaboration with QSI. I’m sure there is more details around this, but Protosounds was a 2 board set…Steam locomotives from this period had this board set located in the tender.

I have one very similar to this. Got it for my second Christmas (11/2 yrs old) my dad thought I should have a Lionel Train Set. I like to dig these out occasionally and run them. Seeing that brass plate on the bottom declaring “Made In the US of America” is such a joy. The train set included a Tuscan red Lehigh Valley hopper, a Sunaco two dome “chrome” tank a black gondola and the red offset “Lionel Lines” red caboose. Still run them on 027 tubular rail. Can’t beat those post war classic Lionel Trains, as far as O guage, the others can have all the fancy stuff, my trains will be running years after theirs give up.

The 3 other Lionel postwar steam engines that are like your engine are the #665,#685, and #2055. These engines including your #2065 were based on a Sante Fe prototype and they all have magnetraction. The #2056 that you mentioned is based on a New York Central Hudson steam engine and does not have magnetraction, the 646 and 2046 Lionel postwar steamers are also based on the NYC Alco Hudson design and both of them have magnetraction. I hope that this helps you to clarify some things about those Lionel postwar steamers. I have 5 of these postwar steamers and 9 by MPC and LTI and I love them all!!! They are great runners and pullers especially with the MPC freight or passenger cars with fast angle wheel sets and the needlepoint bearings. Thank you very much for sharing this video and as always Happy Railroading!!!

Thank you for your helpful video. I tried vinegar on rusted track did not help at all I then used scotch brit heavy duty pads then put my wet track in oven at 200 F . I ended up with warped track that is ruined. I think I will give Evapo-Rust a try. Otherwise wire wheel takes awhile and did not remove all the rust on one of my Marx freight cars but did remove the majority of rust but takes work. Does spraying WD 40 on rusted parts then wire wheel do you think that works better than just applying wire wheel?

    • @modeltrainsolutions7368
      @modeltrainsolutions7368 19 дней назад

Give the Evaporust a shot…I would think wire wheel with WD40 would get pretty messy. With track in the Evaporust, I would remove the ties as it will take off the paint. Also probably don’t want to soak the insulation cardboard on the center rail. Thanks for your compliment!

You don’t see this paint combo much because the Santa Fe silver and red looks so much nicer. There is nothing different from the previous rail line names Menards offered outside of the paint. The chrome is a good selling feature it adds bling to an otherwise plain look. After all toys gotta look good to sell and be something special from what other manufacturer’s engines look like. I’ve come to like the looks of the flashy chrome.😊 The thing I really don’t like is the distance between the two engines. The couplers are way too long.😊 I could also do without vocal, electronic controls, and hand held operation.😊 Your layout looks well presented.😊
