A nice desktop tool for disassembly is a magnetic parts pan to put your screws, springs and clips in. Got mine at Sportsmans Warehouse.

Few things are more satisfying than getting a classic Lionel steamer to run as it was built: like a clock! Great video.

I have one very similar to this. Got it for my second Christmas (11/2 yrs old) my dad thought I should have a Lionel Train Set. I like to dig these out occasionally and run them. Seeing that brass plate on the bottom declaring “Made In the US of America” is such a joy. The train set included a Tuscan red Lehigh Valley hopper, a Sunaco two dome “chrome” tank a black gondola and the red offset “Lionel Lines” red caboose. Still run them on 027 tubular rail. Can’t beat those post war classic Lionel Trains, as far as O guage, the others can have all the fancy stuff, my trains will be running years after theirs give up.

Thanks for sharing! I have a good mix of the more modern trains as well. At the end of the day…there is just something timeless about running those classic Lionel postwar sets!

The 3 other Lionel postwar steam engines that are like your engine are the #665,#685, and #2055. These engines including your #2065 were based on a Sante Fe prototype and they all have magnetraction. The #2056 that you mentioned is based on a New York Central Hudson steam engine and does not have magnetraction, the 646 and 2046 Lionel postwar steamers are also based on the NYC Alco Hudson design and both of them have magnetraction. I hope that this helps you to clarify some things about those Lionel postwar steamers. I have 5 of these postwar steamers and 9 by MPC and LTI and I love them all!!! They are great runners and pullers especially with the MPC freight or passenger cars with fast angle wheel sets and the needlepoint bearings. Thank you very much for sharing this video and as always Happy Railroading!!!

I appreciate the additional information about these locomotives. It’s nice to see so many steam engine fans out there!

For me steam is #1 and diesel is #2 I do not like electrics.

Just unscrew the brush plate and you won't have to bend the spring holders, and you'll get the armature cleaner.

Yes, very familiar with the Antique Toy Mall and know several of the folks up there. I’ve come across a few good deals up there. I enjoy the train layouts as well!
