Another epic interview! Charles scared the living s*&t out of me when I saw him on the gate. I never had the opportunity to race him, but always respected this guy. Understanding his background makes me respect him even more. Thanks Craig!

Thoroughly enjoyable interview. I raced in the PNW from '83-'88 and DY was THE man. Got to see him race a few times, and what always struck me was how he could unleash all that power and not just keep it under control, but do it all so gracefully. Wanted his f&f set, but had to settle for the JMC AP f&f, because even in '84, the DY was already hard to come by. Those JMC designs were so fast and snappy handling, like thoroughbreds. Thanks again for this interview, and photos, it brought back a ton of great memories.

I raced BMX in San Diego in the early 80s. My junior high school years (13/14/15 years old). I met Eddy and Mike King many times. Mike was my age. I've never met anyone that wanted to win as bad as Mike King. He WAS the Ricky Bobby of BMX racing! He would risk anything to win. If he didn't win, he would crash trying.....I remember racing against Doug Davis who was on the DB team. Eddy used to date my friend's older sister. This friend lived a few houses away from me so I saw him there a lot. I remember that white Porsche 944 he owned. I remember racing Rancho San Diego, Lakeside, Kearny. I was sponsored by The Bikesmith bike store in PB. I remember Wheels n' Things. Hey Eddy, remember Hairpin? Redline was also big back then. Having Redline cranks was the shite. I think the Diamond Back team used Redline cranks before DB developed there own. In the 9th grade, I watched the Tour de France for the first time and thought WOW!, that's what I wanna do now. So I traded my BMX bike for a road bike. At 54, still cycling about 120 miles a week today. Great memories......

Gift! Mr. Tommy Brackens walked up to me and let me take his 24" BMX Cruiser around the track a few times here in Southern California's Whittier Narrows where Frosty was running the local ABA BMX races. Tommy was very gracious, professional, confident, and warm. A huge inspiration for me back in 1990. His pioneering spirit still continues to inspire me daily. Thank you two for this incredible conversation and source of information. Clifton Develle Cameron

I remember Tommy Brackens in the BMX magazines from the 1980's advertising the G.T. racing bikes. I wanted a G.T. because of those ads and the photos of the races in those magazines. I did get a G.T. Mach One as a kid it was sweet. It got stolen....But it was sweet! Memories of my youth.

Thank you both so much for this. Besides the obvious connection felt from the Avett Brothers music and lyrics, which brought me here, I identify so much as an artist to the elements and perspectives that have shaped Scott’s life. Found myself smiling and nodding as topics progressed from supportive parents/family to belief that creativity is fostered by support of one another, rather than competition, and that you can thrive in more than one avenue of art at the same time. Also, that to know your limitations isn’t a bad thing… but that when you align yourself with fellow artists or a team, it is a family for sure and you thrive off of sharing and collaboration and/or just showing up to cheer in the crowd. On a side note, I think I’d probably end up in hospital if I ever tried to skate😂, but I have painted a few decks to raise money for a local (York, PA) skate park at silent auctions. Hoping they start one up again this fall. Also, my sister’s town (Hanover) has a cool shop called Art of Board and the maker takes old decks and cuts them up into tiles and makes custom tables, bars, walls, etc. If you don’t already know them, you might be interested! Cheers, guys. This was inspiring.🥰

A group of us went to the Kellogg’s BMX event in Birmingham in 1984,which was on the Sunday, the day after Everton beat Watford in the FA Cup final,I always remember that! Met the likes of Andy Patterson,Brian Patterson,Mike Miranda,Clint Miller,Eric Rupe,Bob Haro,Eddie Fiola,Mike Dominguez,Bob Morales and Greg Hill.Greg had this reputation as being intense and edgy, but he was a real gentleman, signing his autograph in our copies of BMX PLUS and BMX ACTION.All the guys I’ve mentioned signed our magazines.Harry Leary would talk to you,ask you if you raced and how you were doing.Great guy.Missed the 1985 Kellogg’s event, which was a shame as Stu Thomsen,Tommy Brackens,Richie Anderson and Gary Ellis attended that event.I just can’t believe it’s 38 years ago!!!😱Time flies as Oasis named their 2009 compilation album. It’s so,so true.😿
