Mikey was my favorite. My first (good) bike was an 86 Haro Group 1 RS2 in blue/ white/chrome. I just found my 89 ABA spring national t-shirt with his signature right on the front. I'm glad to see his continued success.
Rode trails with Mikey king in 98 in San Diego at this place called White Castle trails. I would ride by myself during the day until my friends got of work. I didn’t work I was a snow bird from the Midwest when I was20 years old. He came out on his bmx bike one day and being from the Midwest racing Rockford for 10 years but now riding trails I knew exactly who he was! Kinda star struck. Anyways he came out a few times early everytime. I would turn my bmx racing skills back on and follow him around. It was awesome! He then asked me if he could bring his mountain bike out. I said you can do anything you want! He said a lot of trail guys don’t like mountain bikes at trails. I told him I used to race and I know who you are. You can do anything you want. After that he never brought his bmx again. He was riding his mountain bike as good as his bmx bike. I’m 46 now rode trails until I was 35, rode with all the best trail guys, and riding with king in 98 in San Diego was the most memorable and favorite pro I ever ridden with…
I love when Mike talked about when someone would cut you off in a race. Those were the 80s bmx. You can't ride like that anymore bmx has been soft since 2000. Mike is a legend!
