Just a heads up, the relay that is being used for the chiller or other large current devices is a mechanical relay. It will wear out or the contacts could get fused (welded to each other). I prefer a solid state relay versus a mechanical one. No moving parts. If routine maintenance is performed and checks then it should be good. Plus, you have the Apex to monitor the temperature.

There's a lot of noise out there. The worst part is it's intentional.

How would you make the Potassium Hydroxide solution? Let’s say how many grams per 500ml of water?

Ben, my understanding is that grain doesn't contain taurine, animal protein does; meat, eggs and dairy. The problem with the non grain dog food is actually that they substituted legumes for grain, the studies are looking at legumes as the cause to the disease. A friend's lab was actually one of the dogs first studied with this condition at NC State vet school. Love you guys ❤❤❤❤❤

I looked everywhere for the relay for the apex. I asked on 2 apex forums, and everyone said I was crazy.

I have three dogs, I myself and went down that rabbit hole of dog food, and I came to the decision that the dog food people are crazier than saltwater hobbiest

In a harsh environment the relay could stick, not sure if Ben's relay is normally open or normally closed. Normally closed could have been the reason it did not come on. The relay should be normally open then energized and closed when needing power. Just double check that.

What is the link to the potassium injection? I would like to try eliminating some that have overgrown onto overflow boxes.

I think what Ben's doing is great. I wish most, if not all, LFS's and fish vendors took QT and treatments seriously. The fact vendors don't take the veterinarian side of fish health seriously is a real problem with our hobby, it's longevity, and results in the very high losses between the fish being captured and sold. However, I don't think an individual hobbyist should be doing anywhere near that. prophylactic treatments from an average hobbyist creates as many issues as it solves: unnecessary deaths, inadequate/improper treatments, and resistance. Hobbyists should be isolating new fish and only treating when necessary. This is a great example of where the hobby should go one direction, and the industry (like Ben) should go another direction. As that burden of initial treatment should be on the business and the professionals. It's because the industry was failing so hard at this, that it was left to the hobbyist to sort out. It should be on the breeders, the importers, and the retailers. Not the home hobbyist.

Good for you. Self-care is important. Many of us here are passionate about caring for the sensitive animals in our homes, we take it as a personal responsibility. We nurture and care for fish, corals, and other inverts hoping to see them thrive. Many of us also care for other pets, house plants, gardens, and a host of other life. To say nothing about the stress of everyday life, a career, finances, nor caring for what's most important: our homes and families. With all of that, it's remarkably easy to put yourself last... Don't. 'Brain drugs' are indeed wonderful. Thank you for talking about it so openly. I have several family members who struggle without them. My mother and sister manage sever anxiety, brain drugs allow them to thrive. While my wife has sever PTSD and trauma from her time in the military. Without her antidepressants, she'd no longer be with us. Don't put yourself last. Recognize when you need a helping hand, and talk about it. Those who care about you, will thank you for it. As for the main discussion: what pest did you visually ID? When I get a new fish, it goes into "isolation". Which is something stupidly easy to do, and worth separating it out in conversation. "Quarantine" implies simple isolation. I think it's too often mistaken with treatment or a hospital tank. Which is a separate process. Only if I identify a disease or infection, do I then treat it. Them I will use copper power, prazi, or another medication as directed. To prophylactically treat (as a hobbyist) is unnecessary and leads to more harm than good. Now, if I were a store or wholesaler, prophylactic may make more sense. Especially if I have trained staff.

I'm also dealing with depression and anxiety issues. Thanks for making me feel normal rich!

Rich and Ben, big fan of the show. I've been running a canister filter on my 65 gallon rimless for a year and a half now. I decided to upgrade to a bigger tank which now has a sump. However, my fiancees tank has been up for a year and has been running a canister filter. We arent breaking down that tank, it will remain until we decide to change it. Her tank are all petco fish rescues. I'm slowly.....SLOWLY transferring my tank over to the bigger system with a sump. I'd love to have a conversation with one of you to relay my experience with the canister filter. I know this a very old video but I can post my email or phone number. Phone would probably be easier because of the amount of information i have. I have a ton pictures of both tanks and keep tank journals. Keep up the great work and hope to hear back from you guys
