    My favorite critters for stirring the sandbed are cucumbers and thinstripe hermits. I collect the thinstripes myself from the Intracoastal and they have got to be my favorite CUC. Even the tangerine-sized ones will climb onto the rocks to eat hair algae, and they burrow into the sand at night.

    Also when drilling, you can adjust the clutch on many cordless drills to a lower setting so it doesn’t put out so much torque and possibly bind the glass hole saw in the glass while drilling and shatter it.

    this is a really cool conversation regarding the growth of Cyano, diatoms and Dinos. and using sand sifters vs chemicals. I think your on to something Rich, when you mentioned the the use of bugs and other inverts to help sift the sand.
    Didn't really dawn on me until now that getting some sand sifters could help my issues I'm currently having with Cyano and Dinos.
    Love watching and listening to you guys.
    Keep up the good work!

    Making me want to pick up another Tunze 3155 after listening to this podcast since they're phasing them out. It's the most bulletproof part of any of my sytems for the last 10 years. I've only had it fail off twice, but it was because the optical sensor got covered in reef gunk.

      The new one is much better in my opinion

    • @GlassBoxAquatics
      @GlassBoxAquatics 3 месяца назад

      @CaptiveAquaticEcosystemsCAE what makes it better? I've heard from some folks in my local reefing group claim that they've had the new unit fail on, and I've never had that happen with my tunze 3155. I don't have any experience with the new one, and so far I've only heard mostly bad stuff.

      @@GlassBoxAquaticsI hope that doesn’t happen to me. I have three of them out there for a few months now and I’m really happy with them. I like the new pump configuration and the sensor is interesting as well with the little temp sensor backup. I dig the light color information too.

      @CaptiveAquaticEcosystemsCAE I like the new innovations, they've added but I hope these are just isolated cases. Having these pieces of equipment with multiple functions under one roof might compromise what the initial function is, being an ATO. I really hope it has a good track record in the future because the old ones will all be gone before long. Keep us posted if your new units hold up after a year or so! Love the content and thanks for the fast responses!

    Dear Ben (aka reef Jesus). Just program the Dos to turn off if the ph > 8.5 (or whatever) and set an alarm. Maybe it’s a probe failure but worst case you don’t dose kalk for a night. Obviously won’t help if the reactor falls over

    Rich, I am with you 1000% on the algae/dyno situation. I keep 1 to 2 blue leg hermits per gallon. They graze the sand and the rock constantly, plus a mix of snails. I never have cyano, etc. I do keep strong flow also. My phos is 0.50, Nitrates 30. If you don't mow your lawn, it's going to grow, right? 😂

    I hate updates. I found the hill and I will die on it. Most of them may fix the odd random bug, add support for something but I make an active effort to set ANY update for anything to 'notify only' and I will update if I want to.
    Nvidia killed my GTX590, Gigabyte update for my mobo f-cked a boot SSD, irreversible update for my old Samsung Note 3 almost made it so that I can't turn off emergency alerts (that they test at like 2am and sometimes gets echos of the same alert) but I digress. Absolutely let the guinea-pigs verify updates in field for you, ESPECIALLY if they don't add anything you yourself need.

    There is a dos issue where it just dumps a ton fluid, I thought it was only the new one, but maybe it’s effecting your clients pump - not a probe issue imo

    I immensely disagree with the ORP comments. I was thinking through the whole episode they could have helped Ben. If an ORP probe was used it could have saved the emergency call, a lot of trouble, and held off Ben's heart attack. In an established reef tank ORP follows a very predictable trend of up and down similar to pH. It is impossible for the ORP to continue a typical trend if kalk spilled over and killed all the animals. ORP numbers shouldn't be chased by new hobbyists and the number alone getting out of whack shouldn't result in a freak out with the hobbyist making immediate changes, but it can be a useful tool for advanced professionals on stable mature reef tanks.
